Cursed Creatures: Chapter Seven

The room she had found the piano had greatly changed. There were no longer sheet covered statues and paintings littered about like careless afterthoughts. The room was airy and bright, the windows open and fresh air filled the space. There was a fireplace with a sitting area around it, the piano just to the side, polished and cleaned and ready to be played.

Belle smiled excitedly. "Did you do this?" She asked as she walked inside, noticing several paintings hanging up. Although there we...

The Theatre Statues: Part Two (special preview)

Once I returned to the theatre, rehearsals got tougher. My mother wasn’t giving us any slack as the days drew closer. Since I had the solo, I was being wrung out twice as hard. Lately, I have been noticing Carmine sitting in the seats. Sometimes he’ll be out front, hidden in the shadows. Other times I’ll catch him from the corner of my eye in one of the boxes. My mother hasn’t said anything about him, but all the other dancers were talking about him. Some spoke of how he’s so handso...

The Theatre Statues (rough draft)

The theatre was being renovated and the owner was going to use my father's artwork. The owner’s wife wanted my father to create statues that would greet guests as they came inside. Her one stipulation was that he use pieces of an old carving that used to hang in the theatre to make them.

My father made three statues for the garden before the entrance. One to stand in the small garden before the stairs, and two more who would flank the stairs. They represented the greatest attributes o...

Cursed Creatures: Chapter Five

Belle woke, stretching and finding the bed empty. In fact, she was back in her bed. Or at least, the bed the beast had given her. She rubbed her eyes, disappointed she had woken alone. When she peered out from the curtains, hoping he was outside and waiting for her. But looking across the room she saw no shadow of him. Where could he have gotten off to? She rose from the bed and walked across the floor and looked out the window. The world was tinted rose by the rising sun and pink sky. Below ...

Abella & Minerva the Moths: Part Two (rough draft)

The last time I had been in Abella and Minerva’s house was just before I graduated. I was setting them up with someone else who could take care of their lawn since I would be away for college. Abella had made a rather big lunch, I suppose she was trying to get me to linger for a bit before I had to go.

“Are you sure you want to go into law of all things?” Minerva asked. She had seemed disappointed in my dream of becoming a detective one day since I expressed my love of crime proce...

I was nodding off on the plane when my phone went off. Cece had sent a picture of the new office building with the furniture moved in. My heart soared and I responded back.

“It looks amazing! Wish I was there.”

Cece responded. “No you don’t, you’re seeing that sexy boy toy of yours.”

My cheeks flushed. I really wish she wouldn...

Cused Creatures: Chapter Four

Rose spilled out the box full of gold coins onto the table and Snow began dividing them up into separate piles, counting quietly to herself as Rose poured them drinks.

"How do you feel?" Snow asked, taking the small piles and placing them into small, marked bags. "You can't overexert yourself again."

"I have to make use of the time I have while Pearl is gone," Rose sniffed.

Snow made a sour face at her.

"Don't look at me like that!" Rose knelt down, prying the floorboa...

Abella & Minerva the Moths (rough draft)

When I was growing up, I used to mow lawns during the summer to earn money. There was one house which my mother purposefully sent me to that no right minded kid would walk right up to. The old ladies who lived there were said to be witches who used the bodies of kids to raise their honey bees.

Of course, this was all just stories. The two old women turned out to be very nice. The more I worked for them, I realized they were just nice old ladies, weird, but nice. They were one of the few...

Cursed Creatures: Chapter Three

The curtains were pulled back, a small bit of light cutting across her face. She moaned and sighed, rolling over and covering her head with one of the many pillows. "Just a little more, Pearl. I'll be up in a moment." She mumbled sleepily.

The blankets were slowly tugged away and she complained quietly. "I said-" she felt his hand on her thigh and she sat up with a fright. His other hand clasped around her mouth and forced her back down.

"I've decided what to do with you this morn...

Cursed Creatures: Chapter Two

Pearl left early the morning after Belle vanished inside the castle. She left even before Snow and Rose had a chance to see her leave. She traveled out the gates of the village and down the narrow dirt path leading into the woods. Not many traveled through there these days as rumors spread far and wide since the monster had taken over. There were others too, ones that Pearl had heard whispers of on the wind. Strange voices coming from the trees and in the eyes of the animals. Something deep i...

The Mask He Wore: Part Two (rough draft)

A man moved into our town. This should not have been the news that it was, except for the fact he came with very little notice. He bought the old winemaker’s manor along with its vineyard. The place had been abandoned for years as the previous owners had lost everything during the drought. It would have sold long ago had they not killed themselves inside those walls. The man who moved in did not seem to mind such things.

What alerted us to his arrival was not his entrance into town, i...

Perhaps there was something bigger than the usual rabbit or mole sneaking around.

I hadn’t been in the woods since I was little. I guess I hadn’t been there since the last time I saw Atmais. It was strange going through the trees, looking for him again. Despite all this time, I found I was still able to follow the landmarks I did as a child. There was more overgrowth, but I could recognize the rocks and trees that had served as my guideposts.
