Cameron and Sam moments are always nice. You could probably argue that this duo is the core of the comic! The growing earnestness of Sam's crush, and the ambiguity (but undoubtedly positive nature) of Cameron's feelings are an interesting combo. What will become of it?

just TERRIBLE (early) concepts
The aforementioned initial sketchbook explorations! Those first two images are collaged from my earliest just TERRIBLE art! There was actually quite a bit of writing on the sketchbook pages they come from, but I excluded it because it was too spoilery. Maybe I'll post the full thing in the future!
As I said last time, both Iva and Conny went through design changes. Iva's TERRIBLE form probably changed the most–it was much more demon-themed at the start (that arrow-shaped tail! <3). I enjoyed this early instance, but it didn't feel like the right fit (for nebulous reasons I'm not sure I could express if I tried, haha). Part of it was that I didn't really want a full wardrobe-change a la magical girl transformations, so I tried to pick out the shape language I wanted for Iva and eventually settled on the current TERRIBLE form design! Less bombastic, but I'm more satisfied with it.

We've finally cracked the shell! Or, Cameron has. Incredible displays of emotion are more in line with Sam's natural state, so it's almost a relief to see her freaking out. (Also, it's fun to draw.)

As you may have seen on my other social media, Concrete Arcanum: Living With Monsters (a comic anthology I'm in) is set to launch on Kickstarter this Friday! But what you definitely haven't seen is that there will be an early access secret launch tomorrow on Thursday. just TERRIBLE concepts
Here are the concepts in full! I have some initial sketchbook explorations as well, so I might post those too.
Iva went through the most changes, but Conny started off a bit different as well. Mallory hasn't changed, but I tweaked her TERRIBLE form in the actual comic to something I prefer. Speaking of which, the TERRIBLE forms had the clearest design goals for me! Iva's is meant to look demon-esque, due to her guilt and poor self image. Mallory evokes more angel-ness, since she's so full of herself, haha. Her knife-summoning power is a play on the idea of harsh words being like daggers, since her verbal cruelty is her worst "SIN". And Iva, who's "SIN" is cowardice, can of course run very fast.
There are a lot of young adult stories (comics especially) with a main cast of teenagers. It makes sense; teenagers are the ones reading them, after all. But I followed this pattern for just TERRIBLE because frequently, high school years are some of the most guilt-ridden and difficult in life. For a world in which one's "worst deeds" are encouraged, that age-range was the best for the story to me.

Another batch of seven! I actually thought this update might be a bit late, but it all came together quick at the very end. I had to have my fight scene! 😤
The mechanics of TERRIBLE are much clearer, now. Though it's a world that encourages the worst in us, there are still moments of connection and resilience... More trouble is sure to comes for our heroes, but they aren't hopeless yet.

Following a Big Three scene is Sam and the break-up carousel! I don't actually think there were that many messages between her and Ambre (who doesn't tend to text without a reason), so she's re-reading the same batch over and over. Good emotional processing!

just TERRIBLE - EP 2 Thumbnails
Seven "pages", this time! It was actually a bit tough to post the whole thing on webtoon; I had to compress the files a bit. Still looks normal, though, so I'm pleased!
The submission period for the contest ends on 5/15, so expect the third episode (the conclusion to this intro arc) soon! I'll know more about what I plan to do with this story after that point, so I'll make a post about it. Whatever happens, I have more plot in my head, and I'm sure it'll make it onto the internet at some point!

A while back, I posted about a comic anthology I made it into. Did you know I actually made it into two? >:D These stories will be about modern monsters! Mine focuses on Korean dragon mythology, gashpon machines, and one girl's efforts to end a long drought. The book is set to launch on Kickstarter next month, so get ready for more soon!
