Whalefall (Redraw)

11/23/25

I really enjoyed redrawing the bat billboard comic last week and had this other comic in mind from the early months of beetle moses. In both comics I really pushed myself to take a simple concept and breathe new life and depth into the illustration, without losing that simplicity. A simplicity which will likely always be with me in some capacity since it’s just the way I like to draw my comics. But this gave me an opportunity to really take control of the line-work, compositi...

This city needs a hero

I’m really enjoying drawing these anthropomorphic animals recently, I wonder if there’s a word for that… anyway I have some slight reservations about posting this one to instagram. Specifically because I’ve had my account limited/shadowbanned in the past for “violence”, which was bogus of course but sometimes a worry about posting cartoon violence or drawings of guns, because you just never know. So there is a slight chance this one will remain a Patreon exclusive unless I’m fee...

Bit of a nonstarter

Every time I tell myself the next comic will be something simple to draw I come up with a 3-part sci fi epic. The most difficult part with this one was explaining the concept in as few words as possible. It would have been too confusing to present completely wordlessly, but I knew that too much narration would also bog down (no pun intended) the panels.

That feeling when you’re on your last warning with the teacher and bro hits you with this look. Really fun one to draw and give some body language to all the animal characters. I still might rework the background colors, because I want to make things bright and eye catching without losing focus on the subjects of the piece. Tricky to strike that balance sometimes. I’ve got a ton of drawing to get done before my trip, including some comics for the Atlanta Falcons so I’ll j...

Coco gettin lined up tho. I am currently in the process of coloring a whole bunch of new comics which I’ll be posting over the next few days. I needed to make a backlog of material because next week I will be traveling to Lisbon! It’s my first time going to Europe and also one of the few trips I’ve taken out of the country so I’m really excited. However the comic train must not stop while I’m gone so I’m drawing stacks on stacks this week in preparation. Love you gu...

Nice (REDRAW)

This comic is a redraw of one of the earliest comics in my beetle moses catalog. It’s an idea that I still really love and I wanted to update with more colors and better linework. It was actually really fun to rework this one and kind of figure it out all over again. I hadn’t looked at the old one in a while so it felt a bit like doing it from scratch. Certain details like the composition/orientation of the objects in the panels changed. Also I’d say my shading and color...

Kinda weird how every miss universe is from earth. We could use some intergalactic representation now and again. Wanted to include some extra visual gags in the final panel like the alien filming on his phone and also the pupae baby version of the xugrulon centaurian watching cluelessly.

I was genuinely wondering this while I was stopped at a red light a couple days ago. I could have googled it but i decided this is probably how they work and I never looked it up to find out if it’s true. Follow me for more facts the government doesn’t want you to know

I’m currently in the market for a new car since my Jeep Patriot has been having some engine problems. My greatest weakness as a man is I know absolute zero about cars. Any time I got to a mechanic and their like oh your flux capacitor is at 5% and needs a replacement I’m like ok

Is this the plot of Free Willy? I haven’t seen it. Anyway, this one took a while to color in a way which captured the feeling I wanted. Specifically, I pictured this scene taking place at night, which I think adds to the heist-feel, but also complicated the coloring process a good deal. The lights emitting from the helicopter, and especially the ripples on the surface of the water in the second panel to imply the air under the heli both took a long time to get the way I want. ...

I have a neighbor who lives two houses down from me who is probably about 40-50 years old and loves to blast metal music, especially when he’s home on Sundays. Which honestly would be pretty chad behavior but is actually obnoxious because he has absolutely terrible taste in metal music. Never played a single banger. Anyway that inspired this piece

BEETLE VIDEO CONTENT

Hey beetle gang! First time talking to the camera in I don't even know how long. I wanted to make a process video for a big commission project I recently completed, with step-by-step explanations for how I tackle my drawings. I break it all down, including some advice on commission projects and how I manage them in balance with my personal work. There's also a good section of this video which is dedicated to "the future" of beetle moses, my current feelings about where I'm at in my art and my...

Now having attended several anime conventions I feel comfortable accurately portraying it in a comic. I have to be completely honest, anime has just never been my thing. I have a handful of shows I’ve watched and loved, and some manga as well. But for the most part when people recommend me an anime show to watch I make it a couple episodes before I’m like eh this isn’t for me. Animation is always dope though. I do wish I loved it like some people at anime cons, like I’v...

Hello everybody how are you? I’ve been spending a lot of time the last couple of weeks working on commissions for clients and it feels great to be drawing my own stuff again. I just worked on this absolutely massive piece (compared to what I usually do lol) related to the NBA that features 30 different players in the graphic. It was laborious but I feel like I gained some XP on the other end of it. Because of its complexity I’m planning a post breaking down the image and my...

Hey beetle gang I am returned from MiraiCon this weekend in south Florida. It was my last in person event of the year and I met a bunch of super cool people. Always come back from conventions with my battery totally drained, but the comics must go on. I actually inked this piece last week before leaving for the con. I knew I really needed the art to speak in this comic since it’s wordless, so it took some time to render it the way I wanted. I’m happy with the colors. Love y...

Lots of fun drawing this one. I’m really enjoying drawing landscapes and trying to improve backgrounds with each drawing. At the time I finished this one I was feeling iffy about the pose/facial expression of the mailman in the final panel, kind of wishing I went with something a little more emphasized instead of the understated reaction here. But looking at it with fresh eyes a day later I’m happy with it and I think the subdued disappointment actually adds a bit to the hu...

I’m gonna be locked in the next couple days getting some comics to paper so I’ll have some backlog before the weekend. This weekend I will be at MiraiCon in South Florida! It’s my first time at this event and I’ll be tabling and paneling there.

Another really cool announcement, which I’ll share on here in a separate post: I have a collaboration with Warby Parker which will be posted this Thursday! I drew some Halloween themed comics for them and they have been ...

I can confidently say I’ve never drawn an anteater before this, but now I get to check another animal off the funny animal comic bucket list. Two ideas in a row which take place in a food court/mall area which was good background practice. Surprisingly tricky to draw the anthill lol. Anyway this idea made me laugh about an anteater that’s sick of ants but like he could eat something else, but he’s committed too much to the bit.

No idea how this one came about but the visual concept of a chicken nonchalantly shredding on a skateboard was funny to me. Pretty difficult to get all the angles right and convey the motion with a character who doesn’t change their position at all. I had to be pretty deliberate about where the camera angle would be for each shot to make things look faster/more frantic. Really fun one to color as well. Happy Sunday!!

Took way too many tries to get the pose of the little white dog right in the middle panel hahaha. I had him in a few different poses in the sketch phase, which I was modeling off some reference photos but I felt they were over complicating the concept and the funniest execution to me was this one. My dog is both of these; sometimes the rage baiter, sometimes the enraged.

Tag that one friend that’s got a big head. Lots of SpongeBob inspo here but I was particular to make all the patrons of the restaurant sharks of some variety. This was definitely one where the facial expression made me laugh as I was drawing it.

First appearance of a mandrill in a beetle comic if I’m not mistaken. Also, something technique related which I haven’t mentioned before: when I’m shading the objects or people in my drawings, Ive started using the color wheel in a method I’ve picked up in the last year. Basically, instead of just darkening the base color (adding black) I actually mix it with kind of dark indigo (purple/navy). So rather than bringing the color down a notch on the greyscale, I’m adding ...

I gotta say I really love how this one came out. Simple visually and I had a ton of fun drawing the creature in the last panel. It made me go back and look at some of the comics I was drawing in year one of beetle moses, and I gotta say it is crazy what 3.5 years of constant drawing will do for you. These days I’m taking just as much time to color and work the backgrounds, even if they’re simple like in panel 2, just to flesh out the scene. Got some more I’m already workin...

This idea came to me and made me laugh. It was actually challenging to put together in a way that was visually interesting because the idea is so simple and all the characters are grey and brown. But I still try to make simpler ideas pop visually so I gave the background some texture. I had a lot of fun posing for these body references and then in turn using those references to draw these amorphous mouse bodies.

I’m on my paleo art arc now. I actually am writing a new longform piece which involves dinosaurs heavily, so I’ve got dinos on the brain and it’s seeping into the comics a bit. This idea in particular made me laugh, especially in the detail process along the way. It was a last minute decision during the inking portion to have Tony and the first dinosaur waving at each other placidly. I think it strings together the pacing of the scene and gives you a feel for the distance ...
