Ch 67 - Caught

David didn’t know what the Caterpie was planning on doing when it reached the treeline, but he’d rather not find out. Not after this kind of luck just fell into his lap.

“Pidgey! Cannon between the Caterpie and the trees! Stop it from getting away.”

Pidgey let out a delighted caw and leapt into the air. She swung her wings down - once to keep her aloft, then again to send lavender spirals twirling through the air. In her eagerness she failed to stabilise herself against th...

Ch 66 - Fate

David watched wearily as Pidgey prowled around the little alcove. Once again she had decided to inspect the potential campsite before they could settle in for the night.

The first time she'd refused a campsite had been fine. The second had been amusing. The third a bother. The fourth downright irritating.

The sun was setting now. An old tree on the top of the small mound that formed the alcove cast a long shadow over them.  He had no desire to be out searching for somewhere t...

Ch 65 - Hatch

For a while, all was good.

Her time was spent with the flock, playing, fighting and learning from parent, Nest-who-Teaches. The days were broken up by the visits from colourful-squishy-respecteds. The strange creatures brought food and occasionally tools to clean the flock. She didn’t quite understand why or what they were, but parent was definite. They were colourful-squishy-respecteds.

She ate, always competing for the best, juiciest bits. She didn’t win often. The others in...

Ch 64 - Acorn

“Are you sure you have everything?”

“Yes. Yes for the last time Grandad.”

He watched as she took a deep breath and tried to calm herself before she ended up snapping at him. Things had never been good between them, but over the last few years in particular it had grown tense.

When he spoke again it was softly. Anger was something he was used to dealing with. “And you’ve said goodbye to your brother? And..”

He trailed off as her shoulders tightened.

Ch 63 - Fuel

Mason snapped to attention as the door opened, ignoring the twinge in his back. Pain was only momentary but respect lasted forever. Only one person was authorised to use that entrance.

Leader sat down and gestured for them to follow suit.

In no particular order, they all obeyed. The speed at which they sat was telling to Mason. This may have been a dimly lit room, they may be speaking in codes and they may wear masks, but you could always spot a soldier who knew how to obey orders...

Ch 62 - Exit stage left

David pulled down the brim of his beige sun hat. He tugged up the red scarf until it covered his nose, leaving only his eyes visible. He’d said his goodbyes. There was no one left in Celadon that he wanted to see or speak to. But, before he could leave, he had one last task.

The city grew busier as he neared the centre. People weaved back and forth, swarming to and fro around choke points created by the puddles left over from last night’s rain storm. Celadon’s buildings had been t...

Ch 61 - Goodbye

David spent the evening packing and planning. He laid out everything he owned. He consulted his notebook. He read through his leaflets.

It rained for the first time in weeks.

Pidgey was not amused. She also refused to go back into her ball, instead, sitting at the entrance to the tent. She seemed annoyed by the weather, constantly trying to poke her head outside to look. Now however, she had another target and was inching towards it.

David gave her a light shove, scooting he...

Ch 60 - Predict

“Ughh.”

David latched onto the nearest shelf to steady himself as he was struck by a wave of vertigo. His head hurt. His mouth was dry. His stomach ached.

It turned out that hangovers were the same in every world.

David blinked fuzzy spots away and let go of the shelf. He let out another groan as his stomach writhed, but began to walk. The morning patrol hadn’t been too bad. Pidgey’s general happiness had given him a boost, though she was nearly as tired as he was fr...

Ch 59 - END?

“3.”

“2.”

“1.”

“Go!”

Pidgey appeared in a burst of light. “Pidgey!”

She wasn't alone.

A mass of undergrowth engulfed the other side of the pitch. Long blue vines shifted slowly, ever moving to hide what lay beneath. All that could escape from these tangled ropes without end was two sets of two colours. Rich auburn roots held the vines steady from below, locking the ever changing mass in place. Glowing white bulb-like eyes shone from the ...

Ch 58 - Challenge

“Condor.”

“Pidgey.”

“Pelican.”

“Pidgey.”

“Albatross,” David said absently. He was starting to run out of birds. At this point he doubted that she would pick the name of any bird but asking kept his mind busy. The first few species had been met with great interest - Pidgey perking up to consider each one, but it had gone downhill when David had gone into greater detail. ‘Sparrow’ in particular was the tipping point.

They’re quick b...

Ch 57 - Poker night

“Kite?” David asked, ducking low to get under a branch. He turned to the side as he did, checking on a known spot. The bush of Nomel berries tucked between a tree and a shrub was undisturbed. All the bushes near the fence were good warning signs of a Pokemon's presence.

“Pidgey.”

David scrunched his nose and hummed. Choosing a name was slow going.

“Aviator?”

Pidgey didn’t say anything, continuing to hop forward.

“It’s a word for a pilot, someone...

“Pidgey!”

“Pid-gey.”

“Pid-gey.”

“Piiiiidgey.”

David gripped the table and tried to remain calm. And his morning had been going so well. Too well. He should have expected something to come up at this point.

“Pidgey.”

Deep breaths. Slow breaths. It’s going to pass. It has before. She only called her name out a few times this morning before they left for the patrol. He was happy for her.

“Pidgey!”

Across from him, Oliver w...

Ch 55 - Call out

Everything went back to normal the next day, or, as normal as things could be now.

David went out on a morning patrol through the grove. He spent the entire time on edge but as Oliver said the night before, he’d hear the ‘giant lumbering oaf’ well before a Snorlax got close enough to be an issue.

Oliver was subdued the next morning. Dark bags hung under his eyes and his head hung low. David doubted the man had slept at all, the fury that had kept him going draining overnight...

Ch 54 - Attention!

David and Michael nattered on for a while, sticking to the theme of legends and pausing only to discuss aspects of the stories.

David had to do some quick thinking to convert stories from his home to the Pokemon world. The Sword in the Stone became about a Pokemon in a cave who would only follow the worthy. Heroes became trainers, dragons became… well, from Michael’s stories, dragons didn’t need to change all that much. Greek mythology translated quite well, with the ancient monst...

Ch 53 - Dumbo

The medicine worked a treat.

David was a little wary of Y Vapour after picking it up from the Pokemart. Oliver's suggested cure came in a bottle that looked like the child of a vape and an inhaler. A large obvious button on one end ejected a puff of vapour into the air when pressed. David jumped back from the spray but even from a distance he could see a slight pastel blue tint to the cloud.

The resulting haze eventually floated down to settle on the ground. It was likely a waste ...

Ch 52 - Upkeep

David didn’t end up going to the Department store that day.

After Sarah and he rejoined the others, the group finished off their matches for the day and retreated behind the metal seating containers for training.

Pidgey started the training off strong. She and Sandshrew took over the dustier centre of the hidden area to practise Sand Attack. David monitored her, but Pidgey didn't give any sign that she had been poisoned earlier. Her lack of lasting injury eased his worr...

Ch 51 - Results

Sarah found a battle quite quickly.

David didn't. He wanted to think it was the type difference. Most of the trainers he spoke to had Grass-Poison types, leaving them at a disadvantage to Pidgey’s Flying, but on even ground with Sarah’s Rattata. The answer was likely much simpler than that.

Sarah was a friendly outgoing woman and the majority of the trainers waiting around the entrance way to the stands were men.

David had baulked when the crowd of twenty or so trainers ...

Ch 50 - Shot

Revealing Pidgey’s new Move to the group was a lot of fun but it didn't go as smoothly as David hoped.

The match against Danny and her Bulbasaur started like any other. Pidgey took to the sky. Bulbasaur darted back to the edge of the pitch and used Growth. A couple of days ago this would have been a foolish decision and left Bulbasaur a sitting Psyduck. However Pidgey wasn’t the only one who had improved. Instead of the thin slithers from last week, an aura of beige formed on the gr...

Ch 49 - Types

David was starting to get used to these morning breakfasts.

Sure they were a little dysfunctional. Oliver tried to speak to him as little as possible and Michael was obsessed with Pidgey. Navigating the mess of reporting to your boss while trying to dissuade said boss' grandchild away from following you around all day was not something David expected to be doing when he took the job.

Still, Michael was starting to talk to David beyond asking about Pidgey. Oliver was grudgingly lea...

“..some damage to the top of the fence but Pidgey and I were unable to find anything further.”

Oliver chewed on the information and his breakfast for a minute. Michael flicked his attention back and forth between the two of them as he shovelled his own food down. David was morbidly fascinated at how quickly the kid could eat without looking like a slob or a pig.

Oliver tutted and set his cutlery down. “It could be a flying type perching but it’s more likely to be a Mankey....

Ch 47 - Exploration

Danny and David split up after an hour or so of chatting, each taking a direction.

Neither of them knew where they were heading, but at least they knew that they weren’t the only ones lost. When they met tomorrow they would share the results of their exploration. Until then they were on their own.

David went south. Danny north.

He wandered, keeping an eye on the other pedestrians out of a cautious habit but enjoying watching the Pokemon on the street more.

A crowd of...

Ch 46 - The Day Off

David didn’t move when he woke. Instead he covered his eyes and tried to get another fifteen minutes of sleep.

Today was his day off.

Well, not really a day off. He still had his morning and evening patrol. And the constant task of trying to figure out how this world and all its messy logic worked.

But it was a day off from group training and battling.

Pidgey was also recovering from being healed yesterday. The Pokecenter receptionist had ordered, rather than suggest...
