Hello everybody,
So yeah. The next video is proving a colossal post-production challenge. I'm hacking away at it, but time waits for no man... So let's do another livestream! Saturday, Jan 18th, 3PM EST.
Here's a [non-broken by a parenthesis this time] link:
https://youtu.be/Ix5y3bN7Qg0
You can hang with me as I toil away on the VFX and chat about life, the universe and everything, with Sammy.

Hello friends!
Hope you're having an agreeable first day of the year.
When we last spoke, I was co-brainstorming the next episode's script on a livestream with our new pal Sammy. We have since finished that script, then I filmed & edited the video over the course of a week and a half.
Now all that stands between you and seeing it... is a little over 110 visual effects shots that I'm struggling to comple...

Hi everybody,
Last we spoke, I was distraught about delivering my TEDx talk on the other side of the world. All your kind words of encouragement were much appreciated. Now I have done the talk and returned to my side of the world. It went fine!
I was hoping to prove this to you with 18 minutes of actual video, just in time for the end of the month, but... they won't let me have it just yet. As any TED/TEDx talk, mine has to go through a process of editing and approval before being...

Hi everybody,
I have travelled to Riga, Latvia, the city where I was born, to speak at a TEDx conference. When I was invited, I felt out of my depth, but agreed to do it anyway. I've worked hard to put together a strange little talk during the past few weeks and the whole time, I've teetered between having a lot of confidence in it and thinking it's complete trash and I have nothing coherent to say...
Right now, 2 days out from the event and thousands of miles away from any resour...

Hello!
I've completed a bunch of things!
I'm sorry none of it could be posted early (due to their collaborative nature), but here's everything in one place:
First, the Ghostbusters episode of Vsauce3's Could You Survive the Movies? in which I'm featured: https://youtu.be/hA0tOcNE4IY
Then, my bigger, harder, cooler Director's Cut of that segment, which is almost twice the length: 2019-11-04 17:30:34 +0000 UTC

BlenderCon is over! I heard from a couple of you (as well as some non-patrons) that you’re interested in meeting me while I’m still in town.
I’ve never done that before... but why not?
Tomorrow from 10AM, for about an hour, I’ll be at one of my favorite places: a Starbucks. Specifically, this one:
The Bank Rembrandtplein, Utrechtsestraat 9, 1017 CV Amsterdam
If you’re not busy, come and chat! (Don’t forget, daylight saving time kicks in tonight.)

1) I’m off to the Blender Conference! Although not speaking this year, I will make a brief, sneaky video cameo in another speaker’s presentation. If it doesn’t end up on YouTube, I’ll share it with you later on. I might also participate in some workshops/Q&As while there.
2) While I’m away, I’ll also publish a fun “PSA” video that’s part of a big environmental initiative by a bunch of YT content creators. I can’t post it ahead of the campaign’s start date, but ...

Hey,
No I'm not hanging out with the South Korean band BTS. But close.
I'm going to do a Behind-The-Scenes stream to tell you the complicated story of producing the new video I just released, with lots of fun behind-the-scenes materials.
Hope you can all join me at 3PM EST!

Hi Friends,
I've been working on the next (legitimately cursed) video every single day, since our last livestream. Yesterday it was in its final stages - the sound mix. I thought I was home free.
And that's when I noticed a tiny mathematical error in the "physics" of what I'm explaining early on in the video.
This miscalculation caused several other things to be estimated wrong, a whole chain reaction of incorrect graphics and voiceover bits, even an on-screen remark that no...

I've been working on a thing the whole month, but for, uh, legally binding reasons I can't show it for a while longer.
However, I can try to describe it in sufficiently ~vague~ terms!
But also, I'm working on a different thing to make up for the delayed thing, but THAT thing, like ALL things, also takes time.
Meanwhile, there's a hurricane brewing in the Atlantic and all the possible projections of where it may hit seem to converge directly on my house.
All of that and...

Here is the inexplicably excruciating-to-finish episode, finally done. Thanks for your patience! Let me know what you think.

Here's the recording of the live broadcast from yesterday for anyone who missed it!
(The live chat also plays back, if you watch on the YouTube page.)
A very interesting experience. I learned a lot, both technically and aesthetically. But overall, it sounds like viewers had as good a time as I did.
Looking forward to the next one!

Hi everybody!
I come to you with a fun alternative to me posting a video on time: a livestream of me struggling to complete said video!
If you play the above link on August 1st, starting at 4PM EST, you can watch me edit the upcoming episode in realtime, at my desk. I'll try to keep you entertained and take breaks to answer your questions from the live chat.
- There will be full spoilers of the episode since you'll see parts of it being created.
- This is my first...

My distracting tendency to chime in about things on Twitter is admittedly something I should work on, but occasionally it results in fun, creative mini-projects.
I made a short video to demonstrate the "smarter" way to extend camera tripods, which makes life easier during a long shoot day.
This is a higher-quality version of the video, without the watermark.

Hello,
I didn't quite manage to finish it in time for Independence Day, but here's a.. 'merica-themed followup tutorial on shape layers, with a few more workflow tips.
If you are not signed up for the tutorials pledge level, don't worry, this is not a mistake. I just felt that since it's an "extra" video, I'll go ahead and make it available to more patrons. If you're not into motion graphics or listening to me mumble for a full 15 minutes, then feel free to skip this :)

I've been working in After Effects for years without ever really using shape layers. But they are powerful tool, especially for the flat motion graphics style so popular these days (and in the '60s). So I've been gradually incorporating them into my work. The visuals in CD/ videos are made almost entirely using shape layers.
In this fast-paced ~25-min tutorial I explain my approach to working with shapes by walking you through building and animating... what else - the Captain Disillusio...

Hello,
I started making this correction video as just a bonus joke piece, but AS USUAL I got carried away, made it needlessly elaborate and took a long time.
Now I'm kind of undecided... I feel weird about passing this off as an episode for the month, but it's also very late in the month to get a "real" episode completed by the 30th. I guess, I'll just push on and bring you the next video as soon as I'm able to finish it.
Thanks for watchin'!

There are many of detailed sounds in this episode that might be fun to hear isolated. Also, 4 of the music cues are original, by me!

Hello there!
Another installment. Working on this video made me think of the days when non-interlaced video simply wasn't an option and all the hoops I used to have to jump through to remove, then RE-ADD interlace after VFX.
Now that I'm looking at the thumbnail, those colors on the right are very unappealing. Will probably change them to something brighter and fresher by tomorrow.
I'm thinking I might come back to doing a regular debunking format for the next release. I'm s...

We're only on the 4th CD / episode and already I'm veering dangerously close to breaking the one rule I set for this series - to keep it simple. The video is almost 6 minutes long and uses a ton of animation.
Came out nice though, I think. Please enjoy!

The Shorties event was very nice and I ended up winning a whale tail! Here is a clip of me disparaging my competition after about a dozen other winners had gone up and gave earnest, emotional thank-yous. A great choice that is sure to age well.
But now I'm back home! And back to work! And my next post will be the new video!

Hi friends,
The new video is NEARLY done, but I have to pause for a quick trip to the Big Apple and frankly, it's all your fault.
If you recall, a while back the Shorty Awards (which celebrate... internet?) autonomously nominated me for Best in Weird of 2019. I was informed of this after the fact and decided it would be amusing to win.
I pestered everyone to vote for me. You did and I became a finalist. But now it is time to pay the price for that hubris. Th...
