So we've got an Epiphan Pearl2, which is actually a really awesome device. We used it to do a video from a billion different angles: https://www.epiphan.com/products/pearl-2/
We have also heard that we are not energetic enough (hahaha) and that's not what we're going for.
So many youtube channels are just dumping mindless swill to their followers and this is sort of poking fun at that. Using the swan...

Now, building your own IDS/IPS may not sound like anything fun except for the most extreme gearheads but has been made pretty easy and is a worthwhile exercise for anyone wanting to see inside the black box that is their network.
The web ui here is pretty easy to understand once you've been shown the ropes. It is very satisfying knowing what is happening on your network at any given time.

Penguicon 2017! https://2017.penguicon.org/
It's a thing. Apparently I go every year. I got to go this year exclusively thanks to you guys. So thanks very much! - Wendell
This probably won't be posted till next week, so this is a super early preview. I've also got some behind the scenes photos we'll be adding for patrons only. Some of it was the AMD trip, some of it was Penguicon (which were back-t...

Let us know what you guys think of this! This was super long and rambly, but we cut it down to about 10 minutes +/- and did two big things:
1) deep dive on gta frame times.
Even though GTA V stutters on both systems, it stutters in different ways. On the Ryzen system it occasionally is less than 60fps, but not dramatically less fps than that.
On intel, the graph is actually more consistent, except for about 3 outliers every two minutes.
Sidenote: On the 5960x system the...

Let us know what you guys think of this! Planning the same sort of thing with other folks like Jason Scott and others.

"When is an overclock not an overclock but also an overclock?" said the hatter, and here the conversation dropped, and the patrons sat quiet for a moment.
We are increasing the clock speed of the ram, but also adding latency so the memory is "roughly" the same speed (not really, it is more complicated than that) at least in terms of latency.
This is your best shot at "overclocking" slower ram (e.g. DDR-2400) to "DDR-3200" in order to get a faster infinity fabric.
We saw...

Preview of a video that will be made live Friday probably. Just a quick easy video on Ryzen.
We've also got another short Ryzen video coming out this weekend -- "overclocking" your RAM to get the infinity fabric to go faster (without actually increasing the speed of the ram much, if any at all). So if you got DDR4-2400 on Ryzen, fret not, you can probably get the fabric to run at 2933 or maybe even 3200 anyway.

We did this build because we needed a Kaby Lkae i7 7700k system to compare to Ryzen & Benchmark.
A Toshiba RD400 NVMe was also added after the video to have more room for games.
This was a quick & easy one. We'll probably publish this one late Wednesday or early Thursday.

We have this little skit for the Webcaster coming up later today for April 1 ("April Fools Day")
We're the court jesters in this one though.
If we get to go to Computex, we will probably take this with us as a convenient portable way to live stream while wandering around Taipei.
Thanks everyone!

This is our upcoming, part 1, Ryzen video. It may still be processing on YouTube around the time this post comes up.
The Ryzen testing was very, very squirrely. We're about 3 weeks in for our access to Ryzen. While Ryzen keeps getting better and better, it is still hard to pin down in some tests. We've dumped so much time into Ryzen.
The short version is that if you don't mind a bit tinkering Ryzen is really a game changer in terms of price/performance ratios. There are still...

Well, we're about four months in, and it seemed like it was about time to make some updates to our patreon page. :)
First and foremost, big thanks to everyone! We’ve hit a big milestone: we have bought all the equipment we have to have and we’re producing a lot more content than we thought we would! Of course that means more editing and more time spent on b-roll; but it's a good problem to have.
We’re still working out an efficient workflow for everything, but ...

Woot! More Ryzen stuff! And the Ryzen 5 stuff has been officially announced.
We have been eyeball deep in Ryzen testing and experiments. We have two videos (lol yes) that will never see the light of day because we speculated there would be a ryzen 5 4.2ghz part. There isn't. Oops!
So that's funny. We'll rerdo it again in abit, and get it online. We've also got a bit of a backlog for some of outher content. Maby spinning plates, aall thanks to you guys. (!!!)

For those of you not in the know we've got a little friendly competition going with Bryan Lunduke (the "Linux Sucks" presentation guy, OpenSUSE board member, etc) for which of us can put linux on something ridiculous and fun.
Bryan is putting his on a puppet (you can learn more about Lunduke.com).
After striking out searching for a nice waffle iron, we decided on a hayes 1200 baud modem.
It's not just a modem anymore, it's a linux-powered time machine modem!

You guys are the most amazing people ever! We're starting to get in the payment for January and holy crap the support is just nuts. We've got a little bit of a backlog of videos at the moment, and we've picked up another intern to help with the workload. That is 110% thanks to y'all and your generous support, that we're able to do that. <3
We've got a preview of the monitor review going live tomorrow. And an update on the challenge to Level1 from Bryan Lunduke.

Big Thanks ! You guys are responsible for this. We've got about 5 videos in varying states of completion.
The first one, other than the channel update, is also ready.
Not sure if it can be embedded here, or it is worth making a second post -- for the mail server bit I wasn't super satisfied with Linode or Sandstorm for DIY mail hosting and someone pointed out that cpanel is the easy-button solution. So I lookded for a provider I could work with that provided a good value...

This is a sneak peek of some "troubleshooting" content. I don't know if this content will be "evergreen" but I hope it is. There simply isn't a good guide on the internet for SMB Multichannel. It is plug-and-play most of the time, but when it isn't there simply isn't anything out there that explains how it works.
What's SMB Multichannel? This basically: Plug in 1/2/3/4 gigabit nics on your computers on your local network and "magi...

There is a longer companion article to go with this video. This video is maybe ready for publishing, but may just be a draft and the final version we may make some changes before posting.
It started out as an explanation for the differences between "software raid", raid (e.g. from a raid controller) and enterprise systems, like SANs, that is really a network of disk devices on a SAS fabric of some type. That was much too long. We've probably got enough material for 3 videos!
So thi...

This is the next video in the queue. We had enough leftover material from the "Troubleshooting SMB Multichannel" that I will turn it into an article with a bit more b-roll and powershell. Why SMBMultichannel? Well if you're on windows and you've got two NICs (even mismatched NICs) you can plug your computers in with multiple nics and copy files back and forth even faster than you were already.
Please let us know your feedback!
Here's a preview of that article:

Eventually, maybe, this feed will be for $1 and up patrons? We'll change the link out for one that wants your email that you sub with on patreon to access the automp3 podcast.
Alternatively, we might experiment with automatically adding an audio preroll (30 secs or so?) to make the feed available for everyone. Or both. Not sure yet.

This is probably the last X99 part we'll see for a while. The X99 refresh brought some cool X99 stuff and this board is really similar to the Taichi from ASRock that I looked at before.
I decided to get a bit nerdy with the power delivery and some of the things I've always wanted to do to see what the overall reaction might be for the audience.
I also tried to relax more than usual for this review. I'm not sure about "the feel" of it -- just experimenting. Also we experimented a bit with...

This is a link to the plan we're thinking for "the plan" on audio.

We were able to pick up a $35 "micon" cable to fix the one lapel mic we had (woot!) rather than replace the mic (so far, its a bit weird, it doesnt unscrew per se.. which is bad.. but not sure. May have to eventually replace it anyway).
