Precinct Omega T-Shirts

I've wanted to do a range of T-shirts for a while, but all of the big T-shirt and merch stores, like Redbubble etc, do desperately cheap T-shirts, usually manufactured in countries where there is little oversight of the process or the welfare of the employees.

So I was excited when my wife, in the course of her own work, came across Teemill, which is a UK-based site for customizable T-shirts. ...

Precinct Omega Podcast scripts

Ey-yo, folks. Some patrons have let me know that they don't really do podcasts or, alternatively, that they do so many that they don't have time to add mine to their playlist, but they're still interested in the content.

As it happens, some of my podcasts are - shock! - scripted. So I actually have a written version of pretty much everything I say in them, which I've been sporadically posting up on my blog at precinctomega.co.uk when I remember.

So, would anyone like to see those ...

Infinite Dark Supplements

If you've been paying attention, you'll know that each of my core Horizon Wars games is due to have three supplements, tied together by a shared narrative.

In Zero Dark, the narrative is the exploration of the mystery of Earth, Ammit and the Skylords' plans. Each supplement picks up the baton from the previous one and passes it to a new faction. So Nemesis told the first part of the story from the perspective of the Venusians. Kurgan will tell the nex...

Next Mini Design - Ngana

This is Ngana, the mech pilot. There are a number of changes still to be made (that cable will go elsewhere).

She will, obviously, work well as an EWOp or even a Doc, but thematically she's a pilot and her equipment is designed to allow her to integrate her headset with pretty much any vehicle with an in-built AI (once a helpful EWOp has wrangled it to compliance) so in the team she doesn't just drive the mech - she also flies the shuttle, drives the car and operates any other heavy mac...

New Patron Levels - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

OK, folks,

A while ago, now, I explained on the Discord that I was looking to switch my income currency from USD (which was the only option when I joined) to GBP (which is my actual national currency) and how this would necessitate an adjustment in the patron levels.

Having had no one raise a huge objection, I'm going to launch this today, so you'll see your patron level change as follows:

$2 -> £1.50

$3 -> £2.25

$5 -> £3.75

Operation Kurgan - the Story So Far

I feel bad that Elite Patrons don't really get much in the monthly update, so I thought I'd start telling you a bit of the story of Operation Kurgan. As we're on month three, what I'm giving you here is "the story so far" rather than the full, novel-y fiction that'll be in the final book.

*

Following the discovery of the Namib Facility and the revelation of the existence of a secret group within (and above) the Skymasters, the embarrassed Venusian command ceded access to ...

Mission of the Month - July - Catch the Pigeon

Edit - Completely forgot to actually attach the mission to this post and only Sascha, one of the new patrons, noticed! Shame on me. Shame on you! XD

Edit 2 - Shame on me! I managed to upload a version of this mission with the Ending the Mission conditions and notes from June's mission. Now fixed. I've double-checked that August's seems fine. Fingers crossed!

This is definitely one of those missions that, I suspect, to the right heroes, the right dice rolls or, pe...

Rule of the Month - July 2021 - Spooks, Dotlight, the Persuaded State and Dependent

It's a four-for-one special on this month's Horizon Wars: Zero Dark Rule of the Month, because I felt like these four belonged together for reasons you'll hopefully see for yourselves.

SPOOKS

Spooks are a specialism in the Horizon Wars: Zero Dark rulebook. These rules are supplementary for this specialist.

Buy Time

At the start of a mission, a player with a Spook may declare that they are “buying time”. The Spook does...

Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark #P001

The "P" in "P001" is for "Patrons only". This is the start of an irregular blog series looking at the development of Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark, some of which will be publicly shared through my blog at http://precinctomega.co.uk, and some of which will be just for you folks.

I've been very tentatively sketching out ideas for how MD will be different to its progenitor and thought I'd share some of those...

Precinct Omega Reviews... Enemy Spotted Studios - Transvaal Kinetic Solutions

This is an early-access video for patrons.

I've been eyeing up these minis for quite a while. The near future sci-fi aesthetics with explicit nods towards the less anime aspects of Infinity the Game were right up my street. But the photos on their website put me off pulling the trigger on what would have been - with postage included - a pricey purchase.

But I spotted a painted example on Instagram that looked a lot better than the images on their site, and I reached out t...

Friday Livestream Video from 11th June - Five Parsecs Review

I probably should've published my post-script to this livestream after I posted the YouTube video, for those of you who didn't catch the livestream.

Suffice to say that I'm a bit nicer about the game in the video than I was in the post-script. I'm yet to get dice down on the game, but I might be able to make time for it tomorrow, and then I'll be able to give it a fairer retrospective review.

Five Parsecs From Home - A Temporary Post-Script

Just for patrons, this one.

So, having really enjoyed reading the Five Parsecs from Home (3rd Edition) rulebook, I thought it'd be fun to get it out on the tabletop and have a go at the game itself.

Anyway, three hours later... I'm yet to so much as move a mini, because this game requires a lot of pre-game organization, note-taking and cross-referencing which, in a book with no index, is a pretty confusing and frustrating experience.

I was expecting a handf...

Dropping like flies... :(

This month has seen the first month since I started the Patreon in which I'll likely be getting less than I did the month before.

I have to force myself to ask, though, "is that a bad thing?"

Obviously, less money is necessarily a painful reality to confront. My income from sales of the books and my modest retail operation is (very) slowly rising, but it's a long way from being the sustainable income goal I set myself. And that's fine (kind of), because I always knew that (1) you ...

REVIEW - FIVE PARSECS FROM HOME 3rd Edition

Here is another first draft of a review I've written for Tabletop Games UK, while I try to persuade the wargames press to pay me to write similar stuff for them. If you caught Friday's Livestream, this one should be unsurprising. If not, you'll hopefully enjoy.

If it sometimes seems like I’m doomed to review games similar to games I’ve written myself, don’t worry: I choose this!

Five Parsecs from Home has been around for a few years now, and is one of a sel...

I'll be interested to hear if my impressions match yours.

Mission of the Month - June - Honey Trap

Honey Trap may be, conceptually, the most complex missions I've yet written. But as more of my correspondents are complaining that missions aren't challenging enough than are complaining that they're too challenging, I feel comfortable with this.

In this mission, the team is trying to set a trap for a spy in their own ranks and, therefore, they are infiltrating their own facility to steal classified information in the belief that the spy won't be able to resist helping themselv...

Rule of the Month - June 2021 - Non-Lethal Munitions

Even in the Fallen Earth, there’s no such thing as a “non-lethal” munition, in that any munition has a chance of killing its target, even by accident. However, X Teams are well trained in the proper use of the mixture of concussion grenades, dart guns and baton rounds available to their forces.

A mission briefing may specify that non-lethal munitions are being used. If so, then all characters are equipped with non-lethal munitions at no cost. If non-lethal munitions aren...

Precinct Omega Podcast - Design #13 - Armour

I take apart the question of armour - both personal and vehicle armour, and with a look at both historical and futuristic warfare - and how game designers frequently miss opportunities to embed the realities of armour into their game designs.

This week, I have attempted to record a video version of the podcast, which will be posted on YouTube. This is just the audio and you will lose very little from just listening to the audio, but I do refer sporadically to to the fact that I'm now sp...
