Life drawings from photoreference: high-res scans #176

Wellp, the time arrived some time ago for single-set posts of life drawings from random photoreference, as my once seemingly endless supply of sets from near-daily work in 2017 has dwindled down to a sadly diminished number.

In fact, as of this post, only 2 more unused images are left in the ol' folder, meaning that in a few months I'll have to switch over to more recent digital-art sets; after those are used up, not sure what the heck I'm gonna do for this featur...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: A new(-ish) SHASTI vs. ANGELS color commission!

Behold, a semi-recent commission in my old, two-color "Con Sketch" format depicting That Darn Shasti once again getting the better of Dirty Pair's Y*ri and Kei.  (BTW, I do like the idea that Shasti might have difficulty telling these two apart from their hapless alternates Rose & Lily, as she can victimize the "real" Lovely Angels almost as easily as their distress-prone iterations.)

2007 "No swimsuit feature this year" backpage comic for PSM!

Running way behind schedule today, so here's a quickly thrown together post featuring my backpage cartoon feature for a summer 2007 issue of the sadly defunct videogame magazine PSM. Two years after the mag had stopped running its annual swimsuit feature with art by many comics artists—ah, yes, the times they were a-changing, even back in those halcyon days of 2007—this was my second attempt at doing a one-page callback to the now-discarded conc...

THE CHASTE AND THE CHAINED: Page roughs for 2nd scene (pp.06-09)!

Behold, my initial page roughs for the second scene from the opening story I'm writing and drawing for The Chaste and the Chained, the previously mentioned fantasy comic I'm using as a test bed for digital art production in Clip Studio Paint.

The first scene from the opening story proved a bit too ambitious to tackle right off the bat, as it involved not only a scan...

VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: More anime & manga commissions from 2000 (or so)!

And now, s'more recent scans from my dwindling binder of photocopies dating back to my Golden Age of Vintage Con Sketches from 2000-2002. A few words:

I strongly suspect that this illo of Deunan & Briareos from Shirow's Appleseed was already been posted here years ago, but I can't say for sure. Worked out quite nicely, regardless.

FAILED PROJECT FRIDAY: Early stages of a never-pitched TMNT proposal, part 1!

So!

At some point in the distant past, possibly the early 2000s, I must've had a conversation at a comic with somebody from comics company IDW about a writing-only Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pitch. Obvsly, nothing ever came of this vague idea, but I did work up an initial pitch document covering the overall direction I had in mind.

And now, without further ado, here's the first half of that overview:

WORK STAGES on illo of BLISS from Rob "Robaato" Porter's CRYAMORE!

Behold, me Work Stages on an illo I drew lo these many years ago for the character "Bliss" from Rob "Robaaato" Porter's Kickstarted but unfortunately unfinished videogame Cryamore.

The vague rough:

Next, I blue-penciled up a finished sketch from the rough, then went back over it with my beloved 5B pencils as used in Empowered—though, T...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: A last bit of ROSE & LILY lore, plus an early sneak peek at THE CHASTE AND THE CHAINED!

So, dear Patrons, even as we enter the era of new digital test-bed project The Chaste and the Chained, time for a look at what will be likely the last sketch sets of "Rose & Lily lore" for a while.

These first two pages of rough sketches were actually drawn and written a few months ago, back in the heyday of my phase of "DiD sketch sets of officewear-disguised Rose & Lily annotated with hastily extrapo...

WORK STAGES on a pretty good (IMHO) 2006 variant cover!

Stumbled across whilst clearing folders off the long-dying Old PC are my Work Stages for a variant cover I drew for an early issue of the 2006 relaunch of Wildstorm/DC's Gen13, which was the iteration written by Gail Simone and drawn by, I think, Talent Caldwell.

I wanted to do a helluva lot more than just draw a variant cover for the Gen13 relaunch, but I had not the pull to even make a pitch for writing the ...

So, following up on our previous post in this series, here are the rest of the complete Work Stages from a 2013 Scarlet Witch/ Domino story I wrote and drew for the Avengers/ X-Men team-up anthology A+X. (I'm a tad dubious about posting Marvel material here, so keep this stuff to yourselves, won't you?)

Anyhoo, this bygone project came to mind as I'm mulling...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: Yet more late-90s ROSE (without LILY) commissioned sketch sets!

Following up on Wednesday's post re: the 2002 Dirty Pair statue set, I dug up a few more damsel-in-distress sketch sets from only a few years earlier (I think), judging by the character design approach. Commissioned by a generous friend who could appreciate the (figuratively) sketchy stuff, the sets weren't particularly narrative in nature.

The first one might even be from the mid-90s, not long after I'd first worked up the costume and character design...

Design sketchbook from 2002 DIRTY PAIR statue!

The highlight of Dark Horse's rather ill-fated Dirty Pair merchandise effort was the fine statue set, as detailed in this 2002-era solicitation copy:

Genetically enhanced super-babes Kei and Y*ri are always in trouble,  especially when their adventures are created by American "manga" artist  Adam Warren! We have enlisted two great talents-- the aforementioned Mr.  Warren and the talented folks at Big Chief studios to create the  niftiest...

After a wondrous two weeks devoid of electrical issues, problems have once again arisen, so posting is gonna be tricky over the next week or two, alas.

VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: Commissions of the "preaching, speeding, ringing & spotting" sort!

As I scramble to rebuild a Patreon buffer, I pawed through my dwindling binder of early-2000s con-sketch copies to find a few more that I prrrrrrrrobably haven't scanned before.

First up is a sketch of Tulip and Jesse from Ennis and Dillon's Preacher. It all seems like a long-ago dream now, but I read the entire run of the series back when I was on DC's comp list after my run on Gen13. (Took 'em years to finally remov...
