Behold, the work stages for a wacky li'l page from the upcoming Empowered vol.12 that's a tribute to both the 70s classic flick The Golden Voyage of Sinbad from my childhood and the 1989 Atsuji Yamamoto manga Sinbad from my young adulthood. As you'll see in a future installment of Vintage Con Sketches, I've previously done a few commissions based on Yamamoto's costume designs, which I suspe...

Behold, a bunch of loose sketch sets featuring the "civilian Emp alter ego" variation from Empowered vol. 12 that I've dubbed "Fetchingly Bepantsed Emp (with Bonus Eyeglasses)", akin to some earlier DiD sketch sets seen here. (Note that, in the linked post, I also described this variant as "Extra Voluptuous", but that's arguably a tad redundant given how I full-figured I dr...

Here are the initial pose rough, cover rough, pencils, inks & color guides for my character-packed cover for the recently released Empowered Omnibus vol.3, which compiles regular Empowered volumes 7-9 in honkin' big TPB form. Once again, I'm doubling up with this week's sets of life drawings from random photoref. First above is a shading-oriented collection from November 2017, along with a sketchier, more gesture-focused set from May 2017.
Note that we've (rather a while ago) crossed an important threshold with these Monday posts—both sketch sets are dated from 2017, meaning that the end of my once-formidable buffer of life drawings is in sight, if still rather a long ways off, as I cranked out life d...

Behold, folks, an exclusive Patreon preview (with bonus page roughs!) featuring one of Empowered vol.12's wilder and wackier scenes—namely, a sequence recasting the series' cast as fantasy RPG characters! (Note that this is from the same source that the book's back-cover illo is derived from.)
Originally I'd planned to show "Elven Paladin Emp" crossing over with the adventuri...

Wellp, I'm down to the last few Dirty Pair--nay, Rose & Lily DiD commissions drawn for a generous friend, circa the early 2000s, in what was obviously the proto-Empowered B&W comic format.
Pity that I screwed myself by drawing Kei & Y**i-based damsels, as I theoretically might've been able to publish these comics elsewhere if the heroines looked unlike my licensed iteration of the DP

Been quite a while since I've done a Vintage Con Sketches post; the only one in August was an Exclusive Monthly Bonus Post for the Bigger Spenders* of the $10 and $20 tiers, alas.
Anyhoo, I've broken out the big binder of photocopies from my "Golden Age" of con commissions and started scanning 'em. (Which is why you haven't seen any in a while, as I've burned off all the already scan...

Fresh and piping-hot off the ol' drawing board, here are the B&W work stages for Empowered vol.12's truly unusual back-cover illo of fantasy RPG-based characters "Goblin Ninja Kozue" (a variant of Ninjette, of course) and "Devilspawn Bard Hannah" (a variation of Mindf**k).

Here are the last of the (many) exploratory design sketches I did back circa 2009 for an ultimately abortive project related to the SSX snowboarding videogame series. At this (very) early point in said project's development, I was just playing around with various potential approaches to the game's familiar cast; the project was cancelled long before I ever figured out a final take on any of the characters.
Still, I had a surprising amount of fun playing around ...

See, you've been missing out on many, many commissioned comic pages and con-sketch-format illos from the rather desperate days of yore when, chronically underemployed as I was then (and often still am nowadays), I cranked out commissioned "damsel-in-distress" content of the sort that would eventually morph into Empowered
