VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: ROCK AND RULE, Sadako, Sen & Hyaku!

An exceedingly unusual and colorful selection of con sketches this time around, folks! We're seeing Angel & Omar from the old Nelvana animated flick Rock and Rule; Sadako Sasaki (of thousand cranes fame); and Sen & Hyaku from Miyazaki's anime Spirited Away.

NEXT MONDAY ON THIS HERE PATREON: Yet another double dose of li...

Work stages on EMPOWERED vol.5's back-cover illo

Behold, the complete work stages for Empowered vol.5's back cover. Note that Age 4 Emp was wearing a different outfit in the actual scene that inspired her appearance on the back cover, but I was not interested in drawing underpants on a g-d book cover. (In fact, I think her "footie pajamas" bit actually works better, story-wise.)

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: More Vintage Con Sketches, I'd assume! View Post

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: EMPOWERED vol.12's deathtrappery!

Behold, another exclusive preview from the upcoming Empowered vol.12! (We're not yet officially on the release schedule, so I can't give you a exact date.)

Wellp, I shan't spoil things by telling you exactly why Deathmonger has morphed into Deathtrapmonger, but I can hint that I'm addressing a bunch of hitherto unaddressed superhero tropes at one point in the book—and this time, the concept being explored is the old-school supervilla...

DESIGN TUESDAY: Character designs for EMPOWERED vol.9, pt.3

For most of my time on Empowered, I would produce, at best, a quick sketch of a new character before drawing a comic page; often, in fact, I would just design new capes on the actual page.  ("Just in time" character design, I suppose.)

However, Empowered vol.9 featured so many new characters during Emp's book-long run through a gauntlet of supervillains that I sat down and cranked out twenty-odd pages worth of chara designs before...

Life drawings from photoreference: high-res scans #94

Once again, I'm doubling up with this week's set of life drawings from random photoref. (Someday I'll have to downgrade to a single piece per post, but my buffer of these pieces remains reasonably large.)  First above is a set from February 2018, while the second set is an example from March 2017, still fairly early on in the effort.

Below, enjoy the higher-res, raw and untweaked grayscale scans as PSD attachments.

VINTAGE(-ish) CON SKETCHES: Two Power pieces & a Monika!

Wellp, back to plowing through the remaining pieces in my old CON SKETCHES folder! With these pieces, we're hitting up more of the  illos listed under the letters P and R.

A few words:

Weird thing is, I actually like most of the art elements in this 2006 Power Girl piece, but still wince at how badly I botched the interfacing twist between her lower and upper torso. A tric...

Work stages on EMPOWERED vol.5's cover illo

UPDATE: Whoops, forgot to add text to this scheduled post!

Anyhoo, the title explains things pretty well, though you might note that I switched out Mindf**k's spacesuit (at upper right) for an image of Anglerfish on the final version.

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Probably our regularly scheduled dose of Vintage Con Sketches, though I might call an audible and switch that out for a set of design sketche...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: EMPOWERED v.12's Elven Princess scene, completed

Behold, the completed version of a brief Empowered vol. 12 scene that I earlier posted as a work-in-progress dealie months and months ago.

The first two (already posted) pages pick up an in-progress scene of Meta Emp boasting about how she uses her theatrical MMPHs to bamboozle bad guys, before recalling that she also uses such over-the-top MMPHing in var...

VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: POP CHASER Japanese doujinshi edition!

As I work through my old CON SKETCHES folder for this Friday feature, stumbled across this fully inked and screentoned illo, which was a piece drawn for, I think, Kenichi Sonoda's Chosen Ame doujinshi. (A friend of mine was a regular contributor, hence my sporadic appearances in the long-running Comic-Market-sold doujin.)

This illo was a tribute to the episode View Post

My 1987 DIRTY PAIR pitch portfolio, pt.3: The rest of the story pages!

Behold, as promised a while back, more of my artwork for the 1987 Dirty Pair proposal that my late friend Toren Smith and I pitched to Studio Nue, the company owned by DP creator and award-winning SF author Haruka Takachiho, in the hopes of doing an original American comics miniseries based on the characters.

This time around, here's the inked, then penciled second half of a short sample story I wrote and drew for the pitch; the discer...

DISTRESSED DAMSELS: That Darn Shasti VINTAGE CON SKETCH edition!

Behold, more early 90s DiD commissions featuring That Darn Shasti (click tag below for more sketches) bedamseling a hapless Dirty Pair.

I was using a photocopy of this sketch to do a test of the color markers that my Kubert School buddy Joe Rosas was using to produce the color guides for 1995's Dirty Pair: Fatal But Not Serious. (This during t...

Your Patreon-exclusive EMPOWERED vs. KRAMPUS Xmas illo!

Merrrrrry Christmas!

Here's an Xmas-themed illo inspired by an amusing December art request from the $20 Patron tier, along with jpegs of selected work stages. (The idea being that nasty ol' Krampus carries off naughty kids around Christmas; Emp's a good 15 years too old for this scenario, but the old goat presumably made an exception.)

Note that I had to flop (reverse) the initial rough to fit the additional panels in the upper right corner.
