After the video I found four tiny components hiding under the silicone sleeve around the charging connector. A decoupling capacitor, two resistors to enable USB-C charging and a mysterious diode style component with hard to read marking.

We have some unusually retro lights on the job. This one was delivered with an unusual pan fault which may have been caused by a repair attempt in the past.
This light uses a 3kW xenon projection lamp to shoot a mass of rotating and morphing beams of light into the sky. It requires Civil Aviation Authority approval to use.

It's rare that I get excited about a new lighting fixture. But this waterproof Cobra light uses a high power blue laser to stimulate phosphor on a spinning disk (it spins for cooling reasons).
It produces a super-sharp point of light that is processed through a very narrow optical path with a gobo wheel with multiple tiny 4mm images on several concentric circles, and the normal subtractive colour system.
This thing slams out a super-intense beam of light that can easily proj...

Things should hopefully calm down soon.

This is an unusual style of safety lamp holder that had failed.

Setting up a recording area in my crew room was very tricky. I've improvised by stacking random bits of furniture, adding a recording surface designed to avoid reflections and used a twin pack of pillows as improvised sound reflection damping.

This is a start, but I need to use colder white lighting and nudge the white balance a bit for more natural...

The very short loop on the flame effect detracts from this light.

It's begging for some new software with randomised effects.

There's no good 4G connectivity and of the two wifi networks available, one is for university students only, and the other open one may be a bit unpredictable.

Taking this apart on the evening of the day before a flight was NOT a good idea. But once I started I had to finish. Even if it did involve some very severe angle grinding of plastic to open.

Darn! I made quite a few goofs while making this video, because I was trying to record it quickly before travelling with work.

Interesting lights, but using the common and very flickery unsmoothed linear regulator approach. The heat radiated by these lights is surprising for LED.
They do have good customisation and hackability though. 2022-07-11 08:49:48 +0000 UTC View Post

Something well designed for a change. The Otis stuff tends to be well engineered, and this is quite a pleasing unit. It's a universal door operator controller designed to drive a beefy 3-phase door motor from an integrated variable frequency drive. It has to be strong, because it drives both the elevator car doors and landing doors, which can be quite heavy. It also has to be able to close them slowly at end of travel, while still engaging mechanical and electrical int...

While functional, this unit has some squirmy things about the design.
Given the choice between the LIDL and Aldi version, I'd choose the Aldi one.

To see if a standard zinc air cell works as a gas generator I put one up against the cell from an air freshener to see how they compared.

Very interesting results.
Right, that's me done with the zinc-air hydrogen experiments. Back to normal content.

This video reminded me of the peril of using Android apps to record videos. At some point there has been an update that reset the default microphone, depriving us of the fizzy goodness when I held the bottle and glass up to the completely inactive microphone.

On a plus note, the default mode (camcorder) did a decent job of catching most of the audio...

This video is more a heads-up to the possibility of modules like these having uninsulated antenna wires that are mains voltage referenced.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw8bqNMadJA
The module itself controls two relays switching mains current, and accepts input from manual switches, wifi or a 433MHz remote with the option to program separate open and close codes.
