A rare review of a phone. (With thermal imaging.)

I don't do many phone reviews, but this one fits in with this channel well.  It's probably the most affordable thermal imaging phone currently available.

https://youtu.be/X5n7oE2K__4

CAT (Bullitt) are currently launching their new CAT S62 phone with higher resolution thermal imaging for those who want to spend a bit more, but the firmware on their previous CAT S61 had a hint of "too many cooks" to it.  ...

Should I make a video about these?

I featured these 3D printed cabochon lights on the last livestream, and was wondering if it's worth making a short video about them.

Here's the openscad script that will let you generate STL files with custom shapes and sizes, including an adjustable size hole for the LED that holds it in position.

The three adjustable variables are LED for the LED hole size (usually 5 or 3mm), Diameter for the outer diameter of the light (it scales the rest up) and facets which is the number of f...

Opening a desiccant drum dehumidifier

Since releasing a video about these units a while ago, one of the most common questions I get asked about them is how to open them for repairs.

Here's a video showing how to open one, and also explaining the purpose of each component.

Exploring a prototype cockroach zapper

This is an unusual thing.  It's a well engineered prototype of a cockroach zapper that was specifically designed to inhibit their sensing ability, which would theoretically allow them to crawl back out of the unit, but limit their lifespan.

https://youtu.be/naNpzv3h5fA

Because this is a prototype and shows signs of being very expensive to develop, I explain the circuitry, but don't show a full schematic. &nb...

Scoping the coil of a perpetual motion unit

These things were called perpetual motion ornaments in the 1970's.  They must have been one of the first electronic ornaments, with a single transistor to make them work.

They still sell them on eBay, and the circuitry is exactly the same, but with newer transistors.

https://youtu.be/VcoC9nYBVpU

I had to get the oscilloscope out for this one, and it revealed a very interesting coil waveform with a sign...

Impromptu glarey TV video

I hadn't planned on making a video about this.  I was asked if I could take a look at an elderly neighbours TV because the backlight had cut out.

https://youtu.be/r2GX2TXwAO8

I'm not sure if it's worthy of releasing as a video or not.  I've ordered a replacement power PCB as a precaution, since the fault rather annoyingly resolved itself as I was trying to diagnose it.

Zapping a Scotch Egg

I know some of you hate these videos, but they're just a break from the technical stuff that seems to appeal to a wider audience.

This time it's a classic British snack - a Scotch Egg that is "getting it".

500V to 12V 3A PSU module

This is one of "those" videos that will only appeal to a smaller group because it's technically involved - the trashier videos get more views.  But variety is the spice of life.

This power supply is very interesting because it is designed for use with higher voltages in equipment where there are two or more phases, but no neutral.

It also has potential for use on some DC tr...

Can you guess what it is?

This eBay special is very cool.  It's firmly in the category of an industrial module.

The video is currently uploading (if all goes to plan.)

I have to say that the build quality is pleasingly professional, and even the transformer looks good quality, with what appears to be a triple insulated secondary (that just means thicker winding insulation).

If the back of the PCB looks a bit freaky in terms of component count, then relax in the knowledge th...

Audio test

The acoustic foam had the unexpected effect of negating most of the treble and accentuating my boomy voice.  That's not so good for people listening on mobile devices as they tend to be less bass-capable.

New acoustic setup volume

I'll be experimenting with the new setup in the livestream area.  The bass is definitely dominating the audio, so I'll either add an external microphone or add a deflector to the existing one.  A test deflector seemed to work better than the improvised PCB one used during the livestream.

It's very strange working in that area now.  Everything is strangely quiet.  Even the trackball clicks are different.

Very good baseball cap light

This is one of the best of this type of light I've seen.  It's designed to clip onto the bill of your cap and is fully adjustable to get the light where it's needed.

I'm guessing it must be popular, since the cost has gone up from $5 when I bought it in March to around $10 now.  I've added a search link in the YouTube description, but it may be worth experimenting with keywo...

Easy power supply upgrade.

This was long overdue.  The original power supply cables were quite thin and had very loose feeling plugs on the end.  By making a new set the same length, but with thicker cable and better connectors it will result in much lower voltage drop, giving more accurate voltage and current indications.

Goodness knows what size of cable the banana plugs are designed to accept. &nbs...

They've simplified the atomiser disk circuitry

The water/whisky atomiser disk units used to have fairly complicated circuitry to sense the transformer current, but they seem to have streamlined that a bit now.
