Sycra's Secret Scraps #3

So here's another secret scrap...  Dunno much to say about these because it's really quite a while since I made them.  I dunno...  I would be interested to know your thoughts on secret pieces or stuff you just withhold from showing for a long time.  Do you like your older pieces?  Do you find you can tolerate older pieces more, or do you hate them even more because you can see more flaws now?

Concerning Style Development

So, I got a message from someone who was asking if they should base their style on reality, and if that would help them, and was wondering what my thoughts on style were and how to push it further.  Here's my response:

I think reality is the best basis for style, but I also think there are different kinds of style ( this is just my opinion, haven't really heard anyone else talk about this )... But I think there's an inherent style, and that comes down to a lot of physical attr...

Okay, so this'll be the last of the image batches.  I was a year into finding my style at this point.  There are hints of it, but I still had a long ways to go.

So there are less images here because 2013 is when I committed to do daily studies with bobmeatbag ( that eventually became the Pointy Chins series ).  So these are images that I haven't shown in the archive already.  There are a couple of card art illustrations but then it goes into the period of 'finding myself'.

This is the probably one of the crappiest years I had artwise.  I joined the Crimson Daggers and started getting work doing card art.  I guess I learned how difficult it can be when you're not following your passion!

This was a pretty confusing year for me.  I finished animation school, and knew I didn't really want to be an animator, but wasn't quite sure what to do with my life.

Not much to show for the next few years...  I had some hard drives who passed away, leaving very little behind.  But I wasn't really making much art around this time anyway.  I'd do a drawing a day, but on top of that, I was sporadic with my production.  2008 will have more to show for itself.

Specialist vs Generalist

Sometimes I get people asking me questions about art and I reply to them with a pretty long reply...  But I started thinking that maybe it would be good to post some of these replies so that they may help more than just one person.  Here is my response to someone who was told they need to learn many styles to in order to have a career as an artist:

When it comes to careers in art, there are really one of two camps you can join: specialist, or generalist.
