If we'd ever gotten an official 1st year compilation book, I wanted it to be called "Escaping the Lab".

So, I was caught up, then I was told by my day job, at the last minute, that I was signed up for a class, and that threw off my schedule. Sorry. Life.
Anyway, today's tidbit:
In the original pitch, Rex and Violet were named Killer and Chupi, each after a dog friends of mine had at that time.

Our original syndicate's sales force had an average age of 101. For my bio for the sales kit I said my writing comics was part of a prison release program. The sales team wanted that changed. Our editor refused. Hence, almost all of the strip's sales came from the only younger sales rep on the team. :(

For some reason whenever I need a random name I use "Steve". You'll see it again in a few more strips. (OT: I've noticed comedian Eddie Izzard uses "Jeff". )

OK. As of this post I'm all caught up. Sorry about that.
Today's tidbit: I'm still surprised that we got to use the character Lidibo considering other things our then syndicate would not let us do. Although, after a few appearances, "The Brain Trust" was limited to only being run on Fridays as we were told that was the day strips seemed to be able to get away with riskier material for some reason.

I almost never get requests so I usually draw whatever random stuff pops into my head, but your fellow patron John made a side comment about Maureen cosplaying as Senko San - (an anime fox girl) - so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I was afraid when we introduced Maureen she'd be considered sexist, instead we got emails from single moms thanking us for making a single mom the smartest and best looking member of the cast.

When I first pitched the strip, a submissions editor went on and on about what a loser Norm was, not realizing he was my "avatar". That seemed very Norm-like.

There was a lot of talk if we should use a word like "snuggling" instead of "intimacy", or even just have Norm list 4 things instead, with this strip.

Despite the obvious symbolism, Norm was actually named after a stuffed platypus an ex-girlfriend gave me, who was named after the teacher of the class we met in (the platypus, not the ex).

Bridget was supposed to be average looking like Norm. I thought she was. Readers started commenting she was too cute for Norm, so I wrote it in. I guess I can't tell the attractiveness of cartoon animals. Had I known, I would've asked Mel to re-design her.

I wanted the characters' colors to be natural colors. King Features Syndicate wanted them to be "technicolored" in case toys were ever made.

Our original syndicate, King Features, wanted Violet to be mint green colored with brown hair. Mel and I decided to switch it since her name is literally Violet. We borrowed the colors from FiFi the skunk from Tiny Toons (although she's black furred in the dailies).
