Implode ~ 15!

“What are these supposed to represent?” Joe tried and failed to understand what exactly it was that his team was fighting right now. The creature itself had incredible Constitution, Meaning that it was incredibly difficult to make any damage that they managed to inflict stick to the beast. If there had been more than one of them at a time, it was unlikely that they would have been able to fight past it, instead of needing to rely on agility to escape or get around it in a different manner...

Joe was on his third Omnivault of the fight, and the constant dodging was starting to wear on his patience. “Cleave! How are you killing them? This. One. Won’t. Die!”

He punctuated his statement by driving his Ritual Orbs one after another into the beast that was lunging at him, its mouth snapping closed on the location he had vacated only a moment ago. “Seriously, what are these things supposed to be? Snapping turtles mixed snails and leeches? Rocks with legs and teeth...

A quarter of an hour later, Joe was starting to get a little bit bored. He browsed his skill list and decided to try out something that he had practically never used: the spell ‘Message’. “It’s at Novice one. All that means to me is that it should level up real quick. Also that… it probably has a super high chance of backfiring, thanks to me being Excommunicated, but I have no idea what that would look like. Let's give it a shot!”

He chuckled evilly as he targeted Jaxon, who...

“I don't know who they are, but they’re gaining on us,” Daniella managed to voice amid her huffing and puffing. It was just past noon, and they had been running for over twelve hours. If Joe hadn't been nearly as exhausted as she was, Major Cleave would almost certainly have scooped her up and forced them to continue going. But with two humans on her shoulders, even she would be slowed down enough that the people coming after them would start to catch up just as they reached a ...

They were only a little way outside of the city when Joe handed Cleave a small tile that contained a ritual he had spent a few hours crafting. “This is a Ritual of Bubble Travel. To activate it, all you need to do is put in a little mana right here, and it’ll send you flying in a straight line toward the capital. It only has a range of a hundred miles or so, but that should get you out of any immediate danger. I need you to swear that if we get into too much danger, you ...

You… are Aten’s father.” Joe snorted and glanced at the Guild Commander. “I'm incredibly surprised, yet somehow it makes perfect sense. I hope you aren’t worried. I have come to understand that the apocalypse on Earth was not your fault, and you were only trying to give people a fair warning. Also, I got a pod ahead of time and was already a permanent addition, so you really have nothing to worry about from me.”

“I'm glad that you liked our products, a...

Lay on Hands was surprisingly easy to capture in an orb. That made sense, as the literal instructions were ‘cast spell on orb’, and the spell was cast by touching something. It made him want to kick himself for thinking he couldn’t manage it—getting caught up in the spell’s complexity and forgetting the actual process—but he… refrained. He had to focus now that he was at the key moment in the follow-up ritual, attempting to place Essence Cycle.

It was… not going well. View Post

“I have a somewhat strange title effect,” Daniella admitted as they all sat together drinking cappuccinos. “I’m such a workaholic that I accidentally died of starvation, continued working in my respawn room, and got kicked out of the room… without noticing that I had died. It’s called ‘Hardworking Ghost’, and it decreases my respawn timer by a set amount.”

“Not gonna lie, that’s a sad story.” Jaxon patted her on the hand, earning a simultaneous eye roll from Dani...

As he waited for his death timer to count down, Joe decided that this would be a good opportunity to go over his messages and stats, and plan out what he needed to do to get the situation in his favor once again.

Name: Joe ‘Excommunicated’ Class: Reductionist

Profession I: Arcanologist (Max)

Profession II: Ritualistic Alchemist (1/20)

Profession III: Grandmaster’s Apprentice (14/25)

Joe swept up from the ground like a whirling dervish, ready to tear into the Elf that had launched the sneak attack. “What did you—oh, he’s dead. What did he do to me?”

“I'm pretty sure he marked you.” Daniella pointed at the sky, where the heraldry of the Elven Theocracy floated high above them. “Do you know any dispel rituals, or something that can cancel that out?”

Not exactly wanting to reveal his lack of diversity in spell casting, Joe could only shak...

“I don’t particularly like the fact that we’re going to be traveling over land for a long period of time, but I also feel that it'll be good for you.” Major Cleave shot Joe a pensive look as she took the lead. “There are several things that will be working in our favor for this trip, namely the fact that Dehur Bethi is in the exact center of Alfheim. Wha…? Not Alfheim, Alfheim! I… I can’t call the Zone by our name for it?”

“One of the curses that comes along...

“Remind me again why we are walking instead of tearing apart our atoms and sending them across space so that we can appear directly in the next city over as they all come back together?” Jaxon spoke out loud to no one in particular, but it was Daniella that answered him.

“It is a safety feature built into the teleporters,” she informed him with a resigned tone. “In an effort to make it less feasible for spies to gain control of teleportation points and send troops directly int...

“That’s why we have a completely unknown amount of time to get this taken care of.” Joe was wrapping up his mission briefing to Major Cleave and Jaxon, just as Daniella arrived wearing a travel pack. “Off to… somewhere, Daniella?”

“I’m coming with you. I want to get out of this… whatever it is that you want to call it. I’m thinking you should name this Hamlet ‘The Gilded Cage’?” Her words soured Joe’s mood slightly, and he was a little less receptive than he ...

New art (Attempt #2!)

I had put up an attempt at cover art previously, but a hefty number of people made really good points about the quality. So, I'm trying again! What do you think of this for the new Ritualist cover?

Incoming teleportation request.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me. I just want to get going.” Joe growled as he stared at the message that appeared on his city command tab as soon as the teleporter came online. “How long has this person been pinging us for their message to come through as soon as the teleporter goes live? Who even is it?”

Message: Invite me in. I’ve been waiting to use the Alchemy station, and you’re almost out of time.

“I don't know what to tell you, Joe. We’re focusing on turtling up, and I’m actively against doing anything else.” Havoc tapped his cigar on on ashtray, sending the burning cinders to land in the porcelain dish with a too-loud *clunk*—as though rocks had been dropped into the dish. “The Shoe is closed tighter than an Elf's grip on one of their holy books. You’re just going to have to stay here and train like I’ve been pushing ya to do.”

*Ooph!*

The humans had returned as conquering heroes—at least in their minds—so being forced to their knees was the last thing they expected. When they hit the ground and felt the pain spiking through their limbs, their moods shifted directly from confusion to fury. Four of the six began mouthing off, yelling at the people they had been expecting rewards and gratitude from.

The Elves didn’t waste a single breath on explaining themselves, instead slapping the humans ...

Joe directed an Orb in front of himself and initiated the Ritual of Remote Activation as rapidly as possible. The time from start to activation was approximately one second. Novice rituals didn’t need much in order to get going. As the rain of liquid stone started to splatter down, a golden light shone up through the magma. “The building is intact enough that the stasis effect went through. That’ll give us ten minutes to figure out how to save them!”

“Yes! Good! I hig...

“Stop!” Daniella shouted into Joe’s ear as he carried her along the rooftops. “We need to get back there and stop him from doing… whatever it is that he’s doing!”

“No, we need to get the delegations out of here, right now,” Joe told her firmly as he—very easily—continued to carry her. It appeared that having nearly a hundred and sixty points in strength wasn’t just for show. “I don’t think you have the same kind of ability to jump around as I do, so unless yo...

“Before we begin…” Aten addressed the room at large as the two groups of leaders for the Elves and Dwarves remained standing on their respective sides of the table. “I would like to address the deal that was made by each party represented here today. Representing the Dwarven Oligarchy, the Council of Five is in attendance.”

Even Joe, with his Perception score being... perhaps not the highest in the room,  could see that the hand of the Guild Commander was shaking slightly...

“They agreed! The Oligarchy and Theocracy will be traveling to the Shoe to begin initial peace discussions! “Good, now ease that line over.” Havoc’s voice was soft, working to not distract Joe as he set up the model for his enchantment. “You are not putting in an angle, you are listing lazily to the left. Languishing, long lines that you lazily lay down. Keep that imagery in your head; intent matters. These lines will help keep your enchantments steady, stable, and mentally sound as they grow in power. There is nothing like calm, quiet, and laziness to keep a ritual from going insa...

As the turkeys were coming up to slash him, Joe found a new and interesting application for his jumping. Twisting in the air, he dropped an axe kick in between the heads of the foremost turkey, finding that the motion almost gave him enough upward lift to vault away from the resistance that met his foot.

“If these things were heavier, or moving faster, I bet I could use them like a platform to push off of!” Joe heaved with effort as he spoke. An interesting side effect of w...

Joe was pleased and relieved to find out that the Pointed Turkeys’ nesting grounds were not a terribly far distance from where one of his tunnels opened out of the Shoe. Especially at the speeds all of them could achieve on a straightaway, the others running while Joe vaulted along. There was something deeply satisfying about doing backflips over your friends as they ran along beneath you. He wasn't sure what it was; most likely some form of ingrained competitiveness that he would probably ...
