Invent ~ 13!

“It’s not like Dwarves are known for their stealth and subtlety. When she’s practically invisible, how am I supposed to know if she's there or not?” Joe grumbled to himself as he worked out his defensive rituals once more. He was using the remainder of his rigid tiles, stone that didn’t need any special preparations beyond ‘flatness’. He amended that thought, remembering that it also needed the special property ‘no bendiness’. Though he understood that there were proper term...

Joe had finished with his defensive rituals, and was eagerly looking forward to testing them out. As they were his first try, and he had designed them to be Beginner rank, they were kind of… weak. For use in Svaltarheim, they were practically useless by themselves. Having realized this well in advance of making them, Joe had found a way to do something hilarious; making the rituals come up to a sufficient level of usefulness at the same time.

Ritual of the Exquisite Shell (Beginne...

Quest updated: Novice Rituarchitect II. Buildings created: 3/10.

Eyeing the message as he listened to the odd sound of brand-new screws biting into wood all by themselves, Joe licked his lips and whispered, “Soon, my sweet class experience. Soon.”

To be fair, each of the buildings he had raised with the ritual had given him fifty experience each to his Reductionist as well as his Rituarchitect classes, but those drops in a bucket only added up over time. He n...

Dark Lightning Strike has reached Apprentice IX.

Lay on Hands has reached Student III.

Retaliation of Shadows has reached Journeyman IV.

Assisted Ritual Orb Usage has reached Beginner III.

Joe’s eyes flew across the information as he entered the tunnels and raised his arms to let the Dwarven guards on duty wave an Elf Alignment Rod, an EAR, over his body. It was an incredibly basic test that listened to his mana frequency to ensure...

The day was sinking into late afternoon by the time Joe and Major Cleave were approaching the main entrance to the Shoe. In a bid to take their time slowly getting to know each other better, they had taken the long route home. Joe had found that even though she seemed cold and distant, that was simply the veneer that had been put in place over the years of service in the Legion.

She had a certain gallows humor that made him chuckle, and the military bearing she kept up at all times had ...

Joe and Cleave stood next to each other, staring up at the rickety sign with ‘temp agency’ scrawled across it. The human looked at the Dwarf askance, “Are you sure about this place? As far as I can see, people don’t come here because they’re… skilled.”

“Take my advice as you’d like, Sir.” Cleave pointed at the window, where a few shifting forms were moving around. “This is where people go when they aren’t yet able to get their own business, an apprentice...

“Bauen, sorry to say, I have another request to make.” Joe skid to a stop atop some rubble, his leap over here having him landing on some shattered roofing. “I need to find someone that can help me design a building. You have any architects in your entourage?”

“No…” Bauen paused, hesitant to speak further, but finally couldn’t hold back his words. “Joe, that is… Major-General, I need to explain something that is a bit of a difficult conversation. We’re here and doi...

Just over an hour later, Joe was inscribing the final circle of Damaged Aspects onto a flat square tile. His plan of working for a solid hour and being done with the first quest had been only slightly thrown off by wanting to explore the workshop.

The majority of the area was an open space designed for any number of magical craftsmen, the only reason it was specified to rituals was his intent upon creating the building itself. The main working room had three offshoots: First, t...

I get to introduce one of my favorite characters this chapter!!

He ran, jumped, and skipped—whatever he needed to get ahead of any pursuers. Joe was over halfway to the Shoe before he remembered to stop and look at his notifications, so he hopped to the top of a tree and pulled them open.

Quest complete: Ranker. You have achieved the highest possible marks of any human!

Title gained: Major-General Pyrrhic, Noble Candidate for Baron (Upgra...

Joe entered the city at a light jog, with Captain Cleave easily keeping pace. They had made excellent time, knowing that there was a better chance than not that Havoc had sent his golem to chase him for the entire trip. Joe hadn’t seen it anywhere, but all that had done was ramp up his tension until he was using Omnivault as often as he could; never knowing when a creature may pop out of the ground, or a tree might turn into a whirling dervish of metal. Even now that he was in the ...

Dokeshi March ~ 30!

The next few hours were notable only in their confusion: a jumble of turns that left Grant’s head spinning. Moving through the Labyrinth was a lesson in frustration; every time he tried to work his way closer to the area where Suki should have entered the maze, he would hit a dead end or find himself body-blocked by a massive monster. He was starting to feel like he was spending more time backtracking than he was moving forward.

Just as he seemed to find a path that allowed him to mov...

The pain in his chest was the first thing that Grant noticed when he jolted awake. Looking down, he discovered a piece of metal sticking out of his chest. His armor had stopped it from penetrating deeply, but it had still stabbed firmly into his pectoral muscle.

<Finally! I was wondering how long you were going to be unconscious.> Grant grabbed the sharp triangle-shaped hunk of metal and jerked it out of his chest. <It’s been a good ten minutes since you blew through...

Actually getting inside the casino turned out to be very anticlimactic, even if Grant was utterly hollow inside from nerves. The gate guards were more focused on the commotion caused by the fallen building and their trapped compatriots than the downtrodden people trying their luck inside the casino. While they shuffled forward through the arched door, Sarge filled Grant in on the results of their trap.

<According to your cultivation levels, you defeated one Wielder and two Vassals in...

After going back and forth on their respective responsibilities, the two of them settled on a plan. Suki took a running leap over to the nearest building to get into position, and Grant pulled free several more bricks in a notch around the section of the chimney that they wanted to fall. He then wrapped a section of rope around it and tied the other end around his waist.

Grant made sure to double-check his work, then moved to the edge of the roof. The rope wasn’t long enough for it to...

The thunderous exhalation echoed down the alley, forcing both him and Suki to shift into near-panic mode. They huddled together against the filthy wall in the dark alley, waiting for someone to turn and look for the source of the noise. Yet, it didn’t happen. The marching of all the soldiers was apparently plenty loud enough to drown out the sound of Grant’s ill-timed nasal expulsion, and the squad continued past them without issue.

“Well. Good thing no one heard that.” Suki gla...

The first few rounds of the poker game went to a man with a thin pencil mustache. He always seemed to have cards just barely good enough to win, and his bets and grin both started to grow larger as time went on. Grant waited quietly on the sidelines, watching as Suki steadily lost chips. He was getting concerned that she would lose everything, but the corner of her mouth occasionally twitched upward into a knowing smile when none of the other players were watching.

<She’s ...

After they both had some rest, Suki and Grant got serious about practicing a few select card games. Grant was particularly fond of the strange game ‘twenty-one’. It was simple, and he didn’t have to worry about whether the other player was being honest or not.

Poker, the one he was told was a ‘gentleman’s game’, was probably his least favorite. He couldn’t believe it when Suki told him that a player could outright lie about the cards they were holding. No...

“Well, that was a colossal failure.” Suki gingerly rubbed some ointment on the burn where her gauntlet touched her shoulder. “I can’t believe we fell for such a simple trap.”

“I don’t know; it doesn’t seem that bad.” Grant was doing his best to wedge the door to the abandoned leatherworker shop back in its frame while they talked, grunting as the distressed wood finally popped into place. “We couldn’t have known there was a trap on a door they must open a bunch of ...

It did not, in fact, take until dark before they walked into the casino. Suki had mostly given up on Grant’s ability to bluff by lunch, and they had devised a new plan by the time they were done eating.

“Okay, going over it one last time.” Suki kept fiddling with the cloth covering the lower half of her face, her nerves on clear display. “I take on the guard to the left, and you take the one on the right. When we get through the door, we stick together and head for the nearest e...

Grant was awakened by a stream of light coming through a crack in the rafters and hitting him in the eyes. The blinding glare made him wax philosophical as his brain kicked into gear. Namely, the thought flowed through his mind like water: How did the sunlight always find a way to get him, no matter how perfectly he tried to hide? It acted like a beam when going through a window, and a wave of water when skirting objects just to annoy him.

He sat up with a groan of pain, his sore body c...

Dokeshi March ~ 20!

They didn’t stop running until late into the night. The two of them had split up, come back together, moved onto rooftops when possible, doubled back a few times, and even set up a fake campsite inside an old bakery. Thick smoke slowly drifting from a partially blocked oven chimney would hopefully make it harder for any tracking animals to follow the trail, especially since they hadn’t stuck around long enough to get all smoky.

Suki had eventually found a recently abandoned blacksmi...
