CHAPTER 12

Grant finally calmed down after a solid ten seconds of running—the pain may have had something to do with that—and slowly made his way back to the tree. There were no signs that Snippy had come out into the open, and Sarge had been working to convince him that an ambush predator like that wouldn’t leave the safety of its normal hunting grounds. “Sarge… I gotta ask, during that escape… did that spider use a spell?”

<No.>

“Okay… ye...

Chapter Five

Sam wrapped up his work, bound the final set of pages into his Fire Shuriken Tome, then headed over to the campfire where the rest of the team was milling around in a rather leisurely fashion. Surprisingly, Arrow was up, though he looked more than half-asleep. Purple bags showed under his eyes, hair ruffled and standing up at odd angles. He’d probably stayed up too late drinking, which was how he spent most nights. Kai, by contrast, sat a ways off from the others, cross...

CHAPTER 11

*Squeak*!

“That’s driving me crazy.” A herd of hoofstock was startled by the noise, and he delighted in the fact that the stampede temporarily drowned out the noise. Sarge had gone silent for the past couple of miles, which always made Grant nervous.

He was right to be nervous. The ground went orange, and Sarge’s cheerfully malevolent voice bellowed out, <Start running! Keep your knees up and lengthen those strides. Run! Look, you’re carryi...

Chapter Four

Sam blinked his eyes open, which felt all wrong since he knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was asleep and passed out on his bedroll in the Wolfman outpost. With a grunt he gained his feet and took a long gander around. The yurt was gone, so was the dancing fire, as well as the wooden palisade walls that enclosed Narvik.

Instead, Sam found himself on a vast plain inside his own head. The space he’d come to think of as his Soul Chamber. He’...

Chapter Three

“Greetings, whelps,” Yurij BrightBlood snarled, opting to use the human tongue instead of speaking Wolfman. Although Sam spoke the language of the People almost fluently, the rest of his pack members weren’t quite so far along. Although Bill knew every word, he couldn’t properly speak at all since so much of the communication had to do with body language.

A fact that Bill felt personally slighted by.

The fact that Yurij was one of the...

Chapter Two

By the time Sam and his crew got back to the Wolfman outpost of Narvik, the sun was lingering just above the horizon, threatening to disappear at any moment. Not that Sam had to worry about the setting sun the way the rest of the human-aligned players did. Sure, the threats that roamed the land after sunset were serious business, but the biggest threat of all was the Wolfmen themselves. That, at least, was one enemy Sam and company didn’t have t...

Chapter One

A bird chirped off in the distance, its shrill cry cutting through the gentle rustle of grass and the whisper of the wind. That was the signal: Sam knew it wouldn’t be long now. He reached up and swiped a hand across his forehead, obliterating the sweat trickling down his face. It was hot out here on the plains. Waist high stalks of grass fought against the party at every step—and the fact that he was in heavy, brown wool noob gear didn’t help things...

CHAPTER 10

Morning came quickly, and Grant awoke early with his new plans front and center in his mind. He left the house and quietly shut the door, not wanting to impact Takato’s sleep. The man had already been kinder than Grant could ever expect, and he needed to leave before he was asked to help again; he wouldn’t have the heart to say no to the old man again.

The smattering of Hajimeni’s houses against the backdrop of paddy fields and the shimmering District barrier wa...

CHAPTER 9

Grant absentmindedly watched two more rounds of fighting. Sweaty slabs of muscles clashed, wrestling to dominate the other as they wrestled on the mat. Grant’s troubled mind was elsewhere; his thoughts struggling with what he should do next just as hard as the random fighters were struggling with each other.

It almost seemed that every decision he made in February so far appeared to be the wrong one. The ambush of Lady February went spectacularly wrong, the ‘easy...

CHAPTER 8

*Bang!*

The race was on, and he was off. Grant jostled up against nineteen other competitors as The Three Mile Tumbler commenced. Out of the square, through narrow cobbled streets, and under the ‘Welcome to Hajimeni’ sign. Even at this early stage, Grant was starting to fall behind the spritely lead runners in their skimpy shorts and tops. His leather armor, although flexible, still weighed him down slightly and restricted his movement.

Even so, this...

CHAPTER 7

Thunder echoed across the landscape, startling Grant awake. He couldn’t even remember when he had fallen asleep! His eyes popped open, and he found that he had rolled within a few inches of the river. Quickly, yet carefully extracting himself from the weeds he was tangled in, he tried to understand what was happening. The sky was clear, why was there thunder? “Wait! I know this! This is Lady February pounding the ground into submission! She’s coming this way!”

CHAPTER 6

As Grant hurried to find a Bed, the drinkable kind, he noticed and waved to the jogging couple that had directed him to the sign-up area earlier. He noticed with some disgruntlement that they still looked perfectly fresh as they started yet another loop around the village.

He passed through a narrow cobblestone street and heard horses, realizing that he was right next to where he had spent the previous night. As he ambled by, the old man he barged past in the morning w...

CHAPTER 5

Three hours into this ‘run’, Grant was sweating freely. Heavy breathing was matched by a steadily increasing pulse. He could feel the pounding of blood as it pumped through his veins. This was not a fun experience, but he couldn’t give up yet; not while he still had energy. He wanted to, but being browbeaten by his sword - and killed over and again -was a wonderful motivator.

He lifted his feet higher with every step to stop them dragging along the dirt ...

CHAPTER 4

The majority of the crowd dispersed, the main event clearly over. Only a few people hung around to watch the next batch of sweaty, shaky competitors pass through the square. Even so, the people overflowed with energy and excitement. They were friendly and enthusiastic, but Grant still felt wildly out of place around them. He decided to try and take stock of the information he had gathered, and re-center his thoughts.

“All these people are serious physical cultivators...

CHAPTER 3

“What’s happening!” The blasting of horns had just wrenched Grant from a deep sleep. A snare drum made a rat-a-tat noise as he rushed to roll up his bedroll and stuff it into his pack.

Hey! Who’s over there?”

Footsteps crunched through the hay, and Grant panic-yelled, “Sorry, I took a wrong turn!”

“No one is allowed to be in here. Get on your way before I call the guards!” Grant barged past the elderly man wielding a pitchfork....

CHAPTER 2

Grant walked along the side of the main road, trying to figure out what to do next. ‘Joggers’, apparently some subspecies of humans, were passing him on either side. Some smiled, and others waved as well when they passed. After the first hour of this, the super positivity was wearing on him. It didn’t help that there was apparently something here that made people look really similar, he could have sworn that this person had already ran past him with a smile an...

CHAPTER 1

The air sizzled with pent up energy as Grant shot out of the barrier, landing with a splash in February. He pushed himself up with a groan, “I hated that so much.”

<Better than staying in January and getting assassinated for your position.> Sarge chuckled away to himself. <By the time you see anyone from that District again, they’ll quiver in terror from your blood-soaked aura. Killers and Kings alike will tremble before your fury!>

“Sarge! Yo...

Lady February ~ Prologue!

February starts in June! Let's get started!

Prologue

“What do you mean she’s coming here?” Baron Thursday the Twenty-Second boomed at the runner that had just skid to a stop in front of his wagon. “Why is Lady February coming here? I’ve paid my taxes! W-why is she doing this to us? We haven’t done anything!”

The runner shrugged and started stretching right in front of the Baron, who’s eyes went cold. “You’re one...

CHAPTER 51

Randall dropped his own sword and grabbed Grant’s neck. The yellow light faded from his body; he had already proven that he had more than enough power to choke the life out of the smaller man, and this time there would be no edict to save Grant’s life. As he squeezed Grant’s airway with his left hand, he cocked back the right and let fly with a heavy haymaker. It landed directly on Grant’s nose, breaking it easily.

Grant pulled back his sword and cut his way out of the thin metal. A strange, pained warble could be heard from where he had attacked. Slashing an opening, he pulled himself up onto the platform with Lord January. Blood was pouring out of the huge man, but the wound was getting noticeably smaller even as Grant looked on.

Grant had originally planned on going into the leap living area, and recruiting everyone that he could for an all-out assault against  the lord of the month that was going to be hunting them in the near future. However, after ascending through the tunnels and the sewers with Marcus leading the way, they found only an empty space.

“They took my boy?” Marcus roared into the empty room. “How could they-?”

Cheers and clapping filled his ears, the audience thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. Derek didn’t go as easily. Even chained, the brawny steelworker managed to take a guard with him...

While Grant waited for the final round to commence, he tore into a plate of food that the chef who had taught him how to prepare vegetables had prepared for him. The man had handed over the small platter with a wink, and a whisper of, “We’re all rooting for you in the kitchen!”

Grant nodded in thanks. He didn’t have the heart to explain that he wasn’t actually a chef, and had more experience picking vegetables than cooking them. In any case, having the kitch...
