A week off!

Hello, my friends!

With the release of THUNDERPLUMP today, I'm taking the rest of the week off, as I am at a conference! But next week, prepare for a new series that I've been working on, both the lore and system, for the last two years: Chance Encounter.

I can barely wait to share it with you :D

As soon as they were out of the doors, the sound of dozens of alarms being sounded around the Town reached Joe's ears. Clearly, nearly every sector was dealing with a breach, and the closest ritual towers to the Town were sending out their deadly payloads. “I'm just going to go ahead and say it. The soundproofing in that building is crazy good.”

“Happy for you,” came the curt reply from the Legionnaire still running alongside the councilman. “Southeast section is the ...

With his new ritual diagram well-practiced, at least in terms of popping it open, Joe found himself itching for an opportunity to put it into play. Its battery was placed, and he’d tested it lightly by running a few strands of mana along it. Not enough to actually activate the ritual or begin its activation sequence, but just enough to test the integrity of its design. “Should work perfectly.”

Still, the steep cost of keeping the ritual active precluded him from testing i...

“How far away do you think that thing has to be in order to be hidden behind the curvature of the planet?” The words fell out of Joe's mouth before he thought all the way through them. It seemed the Dwarf next to him was in an equal amount of shock, because the answer that came back was practically nonsensical.

“This planet is so huge that you could be forgiven for thinking it was flat.” The  scout began rambling. “At the mining camp fifty miles out east, you can look bac...

Seventeen attempts. Seventeen failures. On the eighteenth, the failure that would have taken the last bit of his hope was mitigated by the special effect of his ingot hammer activating and forcing a success. As the energy crackled out of his tool and the anvil took form, Joe was forced to hold back tears of relief. He’d promised himself he wouldn't leave until he succeeded, but the fact that he had gotten within a single hammer’s blow of success at least a dozen times had well an...

Walking away from the new addition to the ritual tower staging yard without looking back was a test of his willpower, but Joe tried to keep his body language calm and his breathing even. “If I don't make a big deal out of it, why would anyone else? There's only one of them right now anyway, not a sequence of Chernobyl events all lined up in serial waiting to melt down and take out the last vestiges of the Dwarven population.”

He tried to stop that line of thinking but couldn't stop ...

“Sorry it took so long to get back to you; we were so close to finishing the project that I had to force these layabouts to push past what they thought were their limits.” Havoc cheerfully called out around a freshly lit cigar as Joe entered the workshop. “But, enough about that! Look at these beauties! The prototype is complete, with room for ten batteries up to the Unique rank.”

Joe wasn't entirely certain what Havoc was apologizing for. “You didn't take very long at all to ...

The knock on his door came even faster than he was expecting, but Joe was still ready. He threw open the entrance, a wide smile on his face as he took in the visage of his old party member, Major Cleave. He lifted his hand in greeting, opening his mouth to exchange pleasantries, but she cut him off with a brusque, “Really, Joe? A ring of fire around the entire Town? Is that meant as a Town defense, or are you trying to slow cook us all?”

“Are they calling for my head already?” J...

“Gather round, gather round!” Joe started pacing in a circle as the crew of Ritualist aspirants shambled into position. He didn't miss the fact that they appeared jittery and somewhat nervous, eyes flicking to the ritual circle etched on the tile that he was casually carrying around. The princess especially seemed to be on edge, and he was glad that the lesson had sunk in so well. “Don't worry, this isn't active. Even if it breaks, it won't hurt you… too much.”

Now that he had...

Literally bouncing off the walls, Joe flung himself through the open area in an attempt to catch up to the leopard and join his friend in taking it down. As the flicking tail of the Boss Monster came into view, the Ritualist sent out his orbs and struck from behind. To his surprise, the creature didn't move, instead flexing its body and taking four strikes while preparing a pounce.

Joe was having so much fun with his lessons that he found himself staying far past when he’d planned to leave. In fact, the only thing that broke him out of lecture mode was the dozens of horns and alarms going off outside of the observatory. Thankfully, he didn't have to give an explanation to his students as to why he turned on his heel and sprinted away.

Most of them were hot on his heels, needing to take up their own positions among the defenders. Since the Beast Waves were a near...

Two hops across the planet later, the Ritualist appeared on the ground next to the shrine in the center of Novusheim, panting for breath and pushing against his chest to physically tamp down the nausea of mana deprivation. Even with the maelstrom of sensations flooding him at the moment, he couldn't hold back the grin splitting his face. “Now that's what I call a successful expedition. Got powerful magical items, barely had to work for them, and didn't die. Power fantasy complete....

His work was beginning to suffer. Joe knew it. He didn't know what he could do about it. Rituals that took him an hour to perform were dragging on for two, even three sometimes. The blueprint Daniella had given him for an elemental playground lay forgotten and untouched on his work table, a prime target for any Dwarf who wanted nothing to do with Elven technologies.

Conversely, he was making a great progress with his Ritualistic Forging, due to constantly taking out his frustrations by ...

“Approximately two hundred hours since the start of the first wave until the twenty-fifth hits. That gives me about eight days in total to get these projects done before we’ll be completely overwhelmed.” Joe would’ve been far more concerned over the situation, were it not for the fact that he now had a Grandmaster and four Experts working for him.

The ritual towers in the distance were constantly lighting up the night sky now, ceaselessly firing into the crowds of monsters. Watc...

After a half dozen hours, Joe had finally come up with his plan for completing the first Mana Battery Recharge Station. “This goes here, this here. Good. With the complexity, if I assume every portion is at this difficulty, and I put in my best effort… it’ll kill me ninety-nine times out of a hundred. This is ridiculous.”

Tossing the documents into storage, he groaned and remembered that he had as many resources as he needed to spend to make the project work correctly. “With a...

Filled with a sense of purpose, Joe was rushing on his way to his workshop to start gathering resources, making plans, and ensure that the connections would be perfectly stable in conjunction with the Ritual of Cleansing. So laser-like was his focus that it was only when a hand reached out and grabbed him that the Ritualist realized that someone had been calling his name.

The overstressed ritual towers whined ominously as they geared up for another blast, causing Joe to flinch as an incandescent, staticky ball of flames shot forth and engulfed a group of screaming Penguins. He didn't like the fact that his eyes and thoughts were on the tower, instead of the creatures below. “Don't blow up until I'm past you, don't blow up until I'm-”

Joe had dusted himself off and retreated back to the innermost part of the Town with all the dignity he could recover. Part of him kept saying not to worry about it, that no one would have seen him fall. But… in a world of superhuman Characteristics, he knew there would be at least some scuttlebutt about it.

Finally returning to the core of the Town, the Ritualist walked into his workshop just as the countdown ended, and the barrier blocking his mana was removed. Like a cloud...

With so much help, it was a work of mere minutes to frisbee the bodies of monsters off into the distance and reverently stack their own people in close proximity to each other. As soon as it was confirmed that no one else was about to die, Joe hurried to the side of the bodies and activated his most powerful deity-granted spell: Mass Resurrection Aura.

Immediately he felt weakened, nearly fainting, as his access to mana was removed for the next twenty-four hours. On the positive side, J...

Joe began placing the final lines of the ritual, splitting his attention for a bare moment to ensure that his Exquisite Shell was running at full capacity.

Just in case.

He’d managed to split the bar of alloy into six slices, each of them slightly more than four millimeters thick. Since the deepest inscription that would be etched would only be three millimeters, the Ritualist was confident that this would work perfectly for rituals of this strength and complexity. Stil...

Kickstarter question!

Hello, my friends!

Quick question for you. I am making a special edition of Ritualist, a totally black book with the title on it in silver leaf foil.

There's going to be a bunch of work left to do, but my question is this: do we like this as the image that will be stamped on the cover in Silverleaf, or should I do something else?

Only seven hours passed before Joe was able to create the third spool of wire, and he held his breath with an expectant gaze as he stared at his skill sheet, hoping to see it update. After thirty seconds, he was forced to accept the fact that he wasn't pushing into the Journeyman ranks that easily.

“Abyss.” Once again he allowed some healing water to flow over his body, and got back to pounding aspects.

Three hours later, Growmore walked into the smithy and tried to convince J...

Everyone involved in the creation of the new type of ritual tower let out a deep sigh of relief as the ritual reached completion and winked out of existence. The only signs that the swirling, swooping spell diagram drawing from all of them had truly existed was the tower gently swaying with the wind… and their emptied mana pools.

“Did you need to make it so unsteady?” Socar the Mage inquired in a gently despairing voice. “Do you know how difficult it’s going ...

Even though he had been expecting it, Joe had to keep his face still so that he didn't show how annoyed he was at the instant rejection. “It’s always such a pleasure to get your opinion out of the way first, Master Frenzy. Truly, of all the members of this council, you have the most stony stare. Now, if you would switch that over to a stony silence, I would-”

Sparks flew off of the glowing pool of aspects as Joe brought his ingot hammer down, shaping the raw energy into yet another Ebonsteel mug. A few careful hits later, the shining material solidified into a room temperature metal coffee mug studded with jewels. The Ritualist grunted as he tossed the finished product to the side, where it clattered into a haphazard pile of mugs exactly like it.

As he wiped his forehead, more out of reflex than anything, Joe looked around in disgruntlement....

A high-pitched whine filled the dimly lit chamber Joe was working in, signaling the beginning of a cascade of energies that would cause his ritual to detonate if left unchecked. The Ritualist’s Aspect Inscriber flew back over the area he’d just completed, quickly scratching out lines of mana and aspects and replacing them with corrected, stable versions that overlaid the original and substituted them perfectly. Sweat dripped freely down his brow as he raced the clock, hoping to outpace th...

<Heed my words, my Progenitor of the Ice.> The words of the Jotunn rang within the mind of the third eldest of the Frost Giants.

He had been hoping for this moment, the honor of being the first of his brethren to hunt down creatures from the summer lands. Brisingr knew that there was no other reason the Mythical World Boss himself would reach out to alter the path he’d been set to roam.

The defenders of the Village were prepared for the attack; eager for it, going by the zeal that they put into each and every blow against the massive creatures coming for them. Arrows whistled through the air, so many that Joe wouldn't feel safe being anywhere in range while hiding. Clearly trained by their ‘betters’, the Archers rarely missed, their projectiles finding their mark with impressive accuracy.

A half dozen of the Penguins were brought down every couple of secon...
