What was and what is:
Hello again! Today I've caught up on patron messages, set my computer back up (had moved it downstairs for some local mp stuff over the holidays!), paid my taxes, cleaned up my office a bit, cleaned up the house a bit, answered my emails, planned a bit of script for the next platformer part and so on. I'd wanted to kick things straight into gear with a video this Friday but a full tutorial might not quite make it. We might be looking at something...

Hope everyone has had a good holiday season! I've been playing a lot of Mario Odyssey since Christmas and it's great. Sometimes you really don't know how much you needed time off until you take it. But I'm feeling good and ready to get back to business. I've had today off, but tomorrow I'll be doing a proper update after sorting the house out a bit and getting to my unread messages on here I got over the holiday season. Sorry for not getting back to some of you but I needed to really "log off" t...

Hello everybody! Gosh look at those numbers.
I'm very happy to report that as some of you have seen, Patreon have walked back their fees update. Sadly there's no way to reach my supporters who understandable walked out over it, but a few of you have found your way back and even more new supporters have signed up since my Ludum Dare stream.
Last week I finished the nine slice tutorial + source code. (Video public this Friday, early access for $5 Patrons 2017-12-18 14:12:07 +0000 UTC

Here it is! It's pretty long at 30 minutes but I did make an effort to keep the pace moving with it. The script isn't all that complicated you just have to be careful as it's very easy to slip up and make a mistake. Follow closely!
Project files are free for $5+ supporters. Go to https://shaunjs.itch.io/shauns-nine-slice/patreon-access and verify your pledge.

Hello! As a minor asset this one is available for all patrons $5+. The video tutorial on building this yourself will hopefully be up for you guys by the end of tomorrow. In the meanwhile the $5+ crew can check out the scripts yourself by going to: https://shaunjs.itch.io/shauns-nine-slice/patreon-access

Shaping up well! There might be an expanded source code made available with this with a few more examples and options than I'll be able to fit into the main video. Look out for it soon!

Update: Patreon have now announced a walkback on these changes, which comes as a huge relief. The below text represents my stance on a fee change that was previously announced that would have shifted payment fees to be the responsibility of supporters rather than creators, which would have been a gross change.
So, quite und...

I made a thing! I overscoped pretty badly this time around and didn't finish in the 48 hours required for the Compo, so I submitted to the 72 hour Jam version instead.
I made lots of fun mistakes that will be interesting to talk about in follow up videos but for today, after 3 days of almost non-stop streaming, other than this update I'm taking a breather-day! Apologies to a couple of you who messaged...

I want to keep things Ludum Dare focused for this weekend so this won't be going out to the public this week. I'll be uploading another quick video soon to talk about the livestream and direct people there.
However as promised, you guys get these videos whenever they're ready. So here it is. I've also demonetized it for the week so it should be totally ad free until release next Friday.
Enjoy!
While I have you, in case you missed it I'm doing Ludum Dare 40 this weekend and wi...

How do you guys feel about these updates? Are they helpful to you? I notice in my stats they don't get a whole lot of views/engagement compared to my number of patrons and I figured some of that is down to people largely just trusting me to Get On With Itâ„¢ but I presume you get email notified about these sorts of posts. I don't want to be flooding you guys with emails you don't care about, since I'm posting an average of 2-3 times a week at the moment.
That said, where am I at this week? Pre...

This was a toughy to plan but I think I've pieced together a way to show a useful example of this stuff. Coming soon, hopefully!
Demo source code to be released as a patron-only extra.

So I'm pretty committed now to doing these every Monday. I think it's useful to let you all know what I'm working on and what I'm planning even if those things change.
Couple of things on the agenda for this week. Video-wise I'm making a sequel to last Friday's Music tutorial, to cover audio groups and general game management of music. It'll probably take most of the week because I've a bit...

Decided to split this topic into two videos: one to just cover the basics of playing and fading music, and a second to cover general management of music and audio groups.
Here's part 1!
I've also thrown up a few more of the videos from GameMaker Meetup which you can find on my channel =)

Hello everybody! I'm working on this week's music tutorial, but I've been thinking about a new type of thing I'd like to try.
I'm going to be totally honest, as much as I love creating tutorials, at heart I'm a game developer more than anything and I'm trying to find ways to make more space for me to do more of that. I've learned so much and improved my skills in so many areas while making videos and tutorials and it sometimes gnaws at me t...

Results for the poll were... not what I expected!

I think there's definitely a mix of people here supporting my work that combine beginner developers trying to get their first things finished and also more intermediate/advanced developers who'd like to see more complex stuff. This was a close poll so I'm going to cover maybe two or three of these (Interspersed with Platformer episodes).
I'...

Creating a simple menu! Only so much I could cover in the time so I might expand the topic further later in the series.
Also tempted to make a standalone version of this, perhaps even as an article rather than a video.
Got some cool ideas for future content too but it's late and I need to get to bed, so I'll hit you guys up Monday with the weekly update =)

This part of the platformer series is going to be focused on setting up a simple menu screen. Just the basics can get a little heavy if you want to do it right so it's going to be a pretty straightforward end result for this video (you can see it in the GIF more or less in its entirety!).
However, I'm planning to expand on it a bit in the videos to follow. I think this kind of stuff is what a lot of people need to really finish their games and make them feel presentable.
I want to ...

Hello everybody!
I managed to finish off the last of my freelance stuff last week which is good news for keeping me financially supported for a bit while I continue to do tutorials here.
I'm going to let last weeks $5+ poll run until next week. If you haven't voted yet you should! It's really closely split at the moment.
This week as I suggested previously I'm going to put more time ...

Public release on Friday as per usual. Feel free to share with friends etc before then as per usual if you want to.
This one is pretty straightforward but has a pretty strong effect! I've been cramming a lot of stuff into each part of this and I'm worried it's a bit dense so I'm trying to separate stuff out into smaller parts where I can. This is about as simple as it gets, one idea fully explained.
Still lots more to come with this series, title screens, menus, etc. Will probably ...

I'm almost done with my freelance video work so I should be able to put up a tutorial this week. This week I'm carrying on with the Platformer series and taking a look at simple parallax scrolling for background elements. It's going to be a short piece as I don't have a lot of time, but hopefully it's easy to digest and is a useful tip for how to think about your backgrounds and their relationship to the camera.
I'm probably going to follow this up with another part of the Platformer series, i...

This week I'll be working on another part of the Platformer series, I'm tempted to then also roll that into another part immediately after since people seem to be enjoying that? It's not super far off being finished so it's tempting to do a lot of it.
Afterwards though I'd like a new topic to look at in a standalone piece. That's where you guys come in!
This poll will run until this time next Monday!
If you have an idea or suggestion that is not in this poll, feel free to ...

Hello everyone!
My next video project for YouTube is planned to be the next part in the Platformer series. But this week I'm going to be doing some freelance video work for YoYo (so ultimately I'm still making public tutorials one way or the other!).
I can't say what it's about but it won't be for my own channel. In the meantime today I'm going to see if I can get some of the video footage from the last GameMaker Meetup uploaded so that I don't have a week of silence.
Regular...

As usual I can't scope or estimate my work correctly and this time in a positive way! I got the video done ahead of schedule so here it is.
Getting better and faster with some of this after effects stuff which is very very helpful.
I'm planning to spend the rest of this week tackling freelance work in order to clear the plate for next time, although next week ALSO likely has a bunch of freelance video work due. (That thing I mentioned I was working on for YoYo? The wheels ...

I've recorded today most of the footage for my debugger video. I'm looking forward to this one as I even learned something awesome myself while working on it.
This is going to need more editing as it's only partly a "walkthrough" style video and more of an explanation/demo style one.
I've got a bunch of freelance work this week to deal with so apologies if there's a del...

Hopefully a bit shorter than my recent trend of 50 minute lectures to give your learning muscles a bit of a break, but just as flexible and solid of a system being taught. If there's some spare time (like if it's only coming to 10-15m or so) I'll likely be exploring sound effects too.

More 50+ minute madness. This one wasn't really intended to be that long it just sort of ended up that way.
I opted for flexibility in the system rather than a fast solution. Unsure how worth it this was as the video could have easily been less than half the duration.
I also left some mistakes in the video that I later correct, I never usually do this and often go back to re-record over errors that produce crashes or bugs but this time I figured I'd leave some in to show a...
