ARPG Episode 34 - Bombs

Jumping around in topics a bit here as there's a lot of tricky dependencies that make it hard to put a clear flow together for some of these episodes. But I hope you enjoy this one as we make a fun item with a cool flashy effect!

Source code (as linked in the video description) will be updated shortly after this post.

GM Surgery 2

It's occurred to me that I haven't been posting up a lot of my content to Patreon other than the ARPG and I'd like to keep more of a record of it here and make sure it's reaching you all properly even if it's not an early release.

Here is our second GM Surgery which comes courtesy of Darthwolf. We look at fixing issues with transitions and how to spot and solve them.

New Year Update!

A happy new year to everyone. Here's hoping for a better year in pretty much every conceivable, measurable way.

You may have noticed I've kept going with the ARPG series in spite of what I'd said regarding v2.3, etc. There's high demand for the series to get finished (despite the typically low views this deep in) and with how little is left to go I've decided to just try and get it done and out the way so we can move on without it lingering over me as yet another "thing still unfinished...

GameMaker Surgery 1 - Pushing and Pulling blocks!

Thanks IndiePunch for the submission! We solve how to add pushing and pulling blocks to the ARPG. It's a mechanic we hadn't really planned for and well, in games that happens sometimes. A lot in fact. So how do we approach adding something we hadn't planned for? By using whatever we have!

The editing etc is kinda rough. This series is hyper experimental and I wanted to quickly try it out while still making ARPG episodes. Hoping 31 makes it to you guys on Friday.

[POLL] Voice shout outs and video credits

Hey everybody! As you know a staple of my videos is rolling off a credits a reel of all you awesome folk who funded the video and allowed it to exist. Acknowledging you for this is super important to me.

When I first started doing these credits I had (and expected to maintain) a fairly small number of $20 supporters yet this number has... grown. Substantially. It is starting to consume quite a lot of time at the end of videos and I'm starting to worry it is bloating the content. Not to ...

Transitions Tutorial & Topic Poll

Hello! My next GameMaker tutorial is going to focus on a practical use for sequences now that we have a general idea of how they work.

By setting up four functions within a script we can create a powerful and flexible transition system that will allow us to build any number of in and out transitions and use them in any combination to travel between game rooms (or even restart a room by just tar...

General Update

Sorry for the lack of updates, Secret Project™ has been demanding and I decided to discard any chance at a rest this weekend by taking on Ludum Dare 47. It was good to see some of you in the stream chat and I hope you enjoyed hanging out for that. The game I made is playable here with source code and all.

GMLive - Update your game code in real time!

GMLive is a tool I've known about for a long time and bought little while ago. I've finally gotten around to using it and immediately knew I had to make a video covering this tool.

Not only is it super easy to set up and use but the amount of time I could have saved by using this is staggering and frankly a bit upsetting.

Hope you enjoy the video!

New $20 slots open!

Hello! I've had a number of requests from patrons to open up more spots in the $20 tier. There are now a bunch more spots available if those rewards are interesting to you!

A reminder on how the 1-1 assistance reward works: If after your first payment at this tier you message me directly on patreon with your Discord username and #number I will add you (easier for me as I get a lot of GM discord folk trying to add me). You can message me at any time with issues you might be facing, ...

Sequences! Finally a "Cutscenes Tutorial"?

As part of covering 2.3 I'm starting off by looking at Sequences. They're pretty cool and open up possibilities for making cutscenes and visual moments within your games that were pretty tricky and tedious to handle before with just code.

They're a little fiddly to handle, and have a ton of uses. Which made it seem like a good place to start for a tutorial.

I'm planning to do two videos on Sequences initially:

[Important] ARPG series and GameMaker Studio 2.3

Hello everyone! version 2.3 has arrived and with it, lots of cool new features! This has been a bit of a looming elephant in the room for me for some time, and I have been putting off thinking about how I wanted to deal with it, hoping somehow it would end up waiting for next year. But it's here now.

Luckily the code for the ARPG series that we have written to date seems unaffected at first glance. It imports correctly from 2.2 and runs as expected. The final version (that the dem...

General Update

Hello everyone!

This week I've chosen to develop a new "GameMaker Studio 2 - Beginner's Guide" This will be sort of reminiscent of my older "GameMaker Basics" video for 1.x, built again for 2.0 but with a sort of new style.

I'm putting in a facecam and doing the video in a somewhat more freeform way, it's a little difficult to explain but you'll see what I mean. I think it'll work well for this kind of video.

I'm only recently realizing just how out of date so...

Important, mysterious, scary, exciting news.

Hello everyone! Today two new episodes of the ARPG and also a bonus video about PokeyPoke will be made available to $5+ supporters, and drip fed to YouTube over the next few Fridays. I've been working hard lately!

But, I am here to announce that over the next few months there will be a slow down in my video production.
