Drawn Aayla only a couple times. I’m not as practiced with her as I am with Ahsoka, or even Barriss. So how am I going to draw Aayla consistently over a couple dozen pages? I gotta get her look DOWN. That’s what today is about.

Good god this takes time, but getting every detail right matters to me. I want to shade it, get a feeling for the tone. The warms of the colors, how they contrast out Blue, Yellow, and Orange characters.

I’ve never done the expression sheet because I’ve always felt it was one more way to further put off the scary prospect of “making the actual comic.” I’ve gone through lots of corner cutting schemes to make the comic go faster. Super loose roughs (end up spending more time doing less quality linework). Skipping the warm up (again, quality suffers). And of course, minimal character prep (characters look too similar, lacking life, lacking character!)

Sometimes I like to literally copy another artist’s work line for line. Controversial! But I only use it as a warm up, and I credit the og artist.
But why?! Well, drawing is just putting lines of one tone onto a large contrasting tone, rearranged in such a way that our brain connects the dots and says “oh that a face.” That’s all drawing is really. It’s like flexing muscles you haven’t used in awhile. Real enjoyable.
So these are the shapes, next I gotta find some background colors that best match orange, yellow, and blue skin.
And yes, you are correct: Aayla will be training Ahsoka and Barriss in the ways of the SEH in Yoda’s quarters. (He’s never around, always hanging around Kashyyyk, something about his good relations with the Wookiees apparently.)
