The Abjurer: Chapter 32-33

When I entered the enchanting class the following morning, Travis arched an eyebrow.

“Mr. Tailor,” he said. “I admit, I didn’t think that you’d be joining us today. Especially when you left the last class with such a… Unique… display of power.”

“Thank you,” I said. “I think? I’m not entirely sure, to be honest. But I want to learn more. There’s got to be more to learn. If nothing else, I have a lot of ideas as to how I can improve my own enc...

The Twin Trials: Chapter Six

The only person I knew of who might be able to interrupt the portal of such a powerful spirit was Orykson – and maybe the Space King, a rival he’d mentioned once.

Orykson wanted me to compete, so if he was calling me, then it was probably fine.

If it was the Space King… Why? I had never met her, and she hadn’t even seemed interested in getting me away from Orykson, given that she’d never tried to offer anything.

Which meant it was probably Orykson pulling me away t...

The Twin Trials: Chapter Five

It took a long time to wrangle everyone into a single file line that snaked across the small valley, and I was nowhere near anyone I even remotely recognized by the time we were sorted – other than Kene, of course, who still hadn’t let go of my hand.

As the sun rose higher and higher in the sky, burning off the mists and dew in the valley, I felt it.

Not everyone did. Kene shivered slightly, but otherwise didn’t seem to notice.

But a few of us, maybe one in every hundr...

The Abjurer: Chapter 30-31

Medb, Crone of Winter, was laughing, her sharp iron teeth on full display.

“Oh, I do love the defiance of mortality…”

I held my hand out and Oracle swept over to me. My aura intermingled with his, and our bond was reestablished.

Normally, it would have taken a full ritual to summon him back to me, but I was actually physically within the Fae Sovereignties, as was Oracle. That made things considerably easier – little more than a touch of basic Aura ma...

The Twin Trials: Chapter Four

It took us a while to hash out the details, but I eventually wound up trading away some of my marigolds, feverfew, vigor-camas, and transivy for a cutting of the firecreep and spiritbalm.

Kene and I headed back to our rooms before I opened the portal to Dusk’s realm, and we planted the two cuttings quickly. Dusk came around to help, using some of her innate command over the space to ease the process, then all three of us poured mana into the plants to grow them.

The Abjurer: Chapter 28-29

Osheen watched as, this time, instead of being sucked into a void, he was placed gently onto a garden path. The path was – of course – made of ice, with delicate rosebushes also sculpted from it. Scattered throughout the garden were statues of people encased in ice.

For a moment, he thought they were just lifelike statues, but as he looked closer, he felt a pit of dread forming in his stomach.

They were people, there was no mistaking that. A human, frozen mid scream, forever...

The Twin Trials: Chapter Three

“Well, it took a lot of work,” I said. “Have you ever aspected a demiplane before?”

“I’ve helped,” Octavian said, nodding. “It takes a lot of effort, time, and magic to manage.”

I glanced oddly at him and he shrugged.

“We use them for some of the more dangerous eggs we have to incubate.”

“Right…” I said. “Well, my mentor helped a lot, I couldn’t have done it without her. But we aspected the demiplane to forest mana and bound the entry po...

The Twin Trials: Chapter Two

Mallory gave me a tight nod, then looked at Riley.

“I’ll let you two catch up. I’ll be in the room.”

She slid out of the way, and I breathed a small sigh of relief. I hadn’t wanted a confrontation with Mallory, and though we’d ended things on… okay… terms, I couldn’t imagine that the loss had done well for her pride.

“I’m gonna lie down,” Kene announced, pecking my cheek before sliding into our cabin.

Once both of the doors were shut, Riley arch...

The Abjurer: Chapter 26-27

This brings us to the end of what I had already written, and just over the halfway point of the novel. I want to try and keep doing two chapters on Tuesday and Thursday, but depending on my schedule, I may have to occasionally only do one chapter.

-

The rest of the party moved with surprising alacrity. The new king and representative of the Vernal Court had much less interest in harassing me than his predecessor did, and many of the fae gave...

The Twin Trials: Chapter One

When we finally got to the front of the line, we were greeted by an older woman who quickly took each of our cards, checked them over, snapped them in half, and gestured for us to board.

“Thank you for your time,” the old woman said as she gestured. I nodded to her, but didn’t want to take more of her time, so I just boarded.

The ship was large.

I think.

I’d never been on a ship before, but this was one of the biggest ones on the dock, by far, and if it weren...

The Abjurer: Chapter 24-25

The explosion of electrical energy threw us both back, and I spasmed weakly. I hadn't even been caught in the direct attack, just the aftermath, but with my cloak's power gone, it had still hurt. There were burn marks on my body, and they hurt to an absurd degree, but I pushed past them.

Osheen. If I didn't keep moving, he'd be enslaved to her.

I scrabbled in my pocket for my emergency simulacrum device, the one Draven had traded me. It was still there, and I let out a sigh of rel...

Dusk shook her head, and the dragon nodded.

“It’s unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected. Your privacy will, of course, be respected, Dusk,” the river dragon said. “Malachi?”

“She gets the call,” I said. “As much as I’d love some more Dott’s Draught, I’m not going against her for this.”

“Alright, then,” she said. “Spirit of the Library, Return.”

The void swallowed us, and then Dusk and I were standing in a corner of the library, behind...

To my surprise, even Orykson arrived to train me on the last Liday before the Idyll-Flume.

“Oh, hello,” I said before shoving the last of my pastry into my mouth. Orykson’s eyebrow twitched and I quickly swallowed it. “What’s on the lesson for today’s training?”

“More work with Spatial Tripwire,” Orykson said, and I had to hold in a groan. I knew he wouldn’t appreciate it, but… Ward work? Really?

“I know it isn’t appropriate for your personality,”...

“It won’t be enough. I just ran through calculations of fighting her with your staff. It can do damage for sure, but it’s simply not got enough charges or power to let it keep up with her the entire battle.”

“Calculations?” I asked. As far as I was aware, there was no way to measure power so directly, and even if where were, none of them would factor in skill with using the power.

“They’re generalized, but Elderglass has a standardized unit for Aura with an average...

The following morning, Ikki arrived at precisely the right time, as usual, and I was already in the backyard, waiting for him.

“Since you will be inside of the Idyll-Flume for the next month, we won’t see each other for some time,” Ikki said. “As such, I’ll be expanding the time of today’s lesson.”

“Makes sense,” I said. “What’s the purpose of today? More illusion work?”

“Not today, though you should maintain your training there,” Ikki said. Then ...

The Abjurer: Chapter 20-21

A divination surged through her room, pulling information back through the invisible webs of the world and into my hand. The Aura began to spin and swirl, breaking into two parts, one red, and one green.

The fae waved her hands frantically, spells surging out of her to try and counter my divination.

The first thing she cut off was the red streak of aura, the tracking spell that located Osheen.

Which gave me just enough time to press Rowan’s amulet into the spell array.

I spent a while filling Meadow in on everything that had happened, from the mantle estragon eggs to my desire to be a better host to the small folk. By the end, Meadow’s worn face had cracked into a smile.

“What?” I asked self consciously.

“I’m proud of you,” Meadow said. “You’ll face challenges in both of those tasks… Admittedly less so with the small folk, but it’s good.”

I felt my chest swell a little bit at that and couldn’t stop myself from retur...

After I grabbed a leftover sandwich from the fridge and made us a cup of coffee, Liz and I went down to business. Dusk had managed to procure a tiny cup, sized for small folk, from one of the brownies, and used that to fix herself a miniature cup of her own.

The cream and eggs that I set out each night for the small folk was starting to feel like not nearly enough for the help that they gave me, and I had barely interacted with the fungal folk at all… I mentally reminded myself to see...

It was stunning. The walls were made from ten thousand shades of ice, with blues and whites that refracted light in stunning patterns through the air.

Not random patterns either. The light formed boundaries to create gaps of darkness that were shaped into massive, three-dimensional spells.

No.

Not three dimensional.

The flow of time wasn’t just being used to charge up the power of the array. It was an integrated component of the spell, and I didn’t have the fundame...

I looked up as Briarthreads burst out around me and I Foxstepped a few feet forwards.

Soaring high above was a small flock of about half a dozen birds, spitting at us. The spit felt like an attack spell, but it was one of the strangest ones I’d ever felt.

It wasn’t that the mana was strong – I’d seen my share of powerful mana, hanging around Orykson, Meadow, and Ikki for as long as I had.

Nor was it that the mana was complex – I’d also seen a lot of complex mana ...

I told myself that it was the last time I’d need to do it for a long time, and I hoped I was right.

“Flatten the bronze out as thin as you can make it,” I commanded Lyn and Sarai’s uncle, “then inscribe this series of glyphs on it.”

I placed down the sheet of paper containing the spell that would anchor the universal anchor to the series of inductors and capacitors. Each rune was as small as I could make it – I wasn’t good enough to need a magnifying glass to read ...

I looked at Dusk, and for a few moments, silent understanding passed between us. Then I turned to look at the elder dragon.

“This will help the mantle dragon populations, right?” I asked.

Ivy’s mother made a so-so gesture, and I noticed that she had ever so slightly claw tipped fingers.

“It’s not going to rewrite the global populations in a day, or anything like that. It also depends on if you mean dragon, as in Ivy or I, or if you mean dragon as in the family of c...

The Abjurer: Chapter 14.5-15

George idly tapped his fingers on his desk, bored and curious. It wasn’t like Travis to be late to class, so something must have been holding him up. He was already a bit annoyed with how early this class was, so when Travis walked in late, with Evan next to him, George let out a loud snort.

“Holding up the professor, Tailor?”

Evan gave him a strange look, and George frowned, not sure how to interpret it.

“Mr. Tailor believes that he’s created a powerful enough sui...
