Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 070 - One last gift

“Go for it. It’s your turn,” Max repeated, nudging Fowl, who stood before the lid of the silver chest. Gold-etched carvings of the kemonomimi decorated the sides.

Grinning, Fowl didn’t hesitate and lifted the lid, each of them glancing inside to see what was there.

“Well, I’ll be a troll’s uncle,” Fowl muttered as he saw the items in the dimensional storage of the chest.

A pair of black chain leggings, a crystal-looking ring, a gold armband, and a plate helme...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 052 - A surprise encounter

Walking along the sand had been more challenging than Kaen had initially expected.  Even with his strength and dexterity, the constant way it sunk was new.  It was sometimes like walking through mud that gripped at your feet.

That thought reminded him that his boots needed a good shaking out as the sand on his foot had begun rubbing all over his skin.  It seemed to want to stick to every part of his wet body when he had gotten out of the water.

He had walked a few m...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 069 - Smarter foes

The right knee came forward, catching him in his chest and chin, sending him flying backward.

Max hadn’t even considered that a possible attack, especially after just making another massive wound to that leg.

Even being only a few feet away, the speed of the knee as the boss shifted its hips and caught Max square in the chest and face.

He flew through the air, barely a few feet off the ground, when the boss’s two hands came down at him.

There was nothing Max could ...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 051 - Mirages in the sea

Kaen could feel Pammon’s body beginning to tire some as the second full day of flying ended.  The storm clouds had finally faded away behind them, and blank skies, baking them in the sun over endless water, was all they experienced for the last few hours.

This seems like a foolish question, but are you sure you don’t want to try and get yourself some food?

Pammon’s stomach growled, and Kaen knew he was hungry, having flown non-stop and not eaten anything since ...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 050 - Setting out across the unknown

Kaen watched as the carts returned to the city of Blue Belly.

You are going to cost me all the gold we got.  I had no idea they would want so much money for those cows.

Pammon grunted through the bond, and Kaen turned to see him swallowing half of a cow, his head tilted up, hooves sticking out of his open maw.

That sight always gets me.

I don’t stare while you eat and nitpick how you chew.

Chuckling, Kaen nodded and turne...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 049 - Towns by the sea

Both women had promised to keep watch over Kaen and Pammon even though he had attempted to convince them it wasn’t needed.

The matter of honor had to be proven, and when Kaen left in the morning, both gave him a small gift.  Tioanoe gave Kaen a small blueish rock with sparks inside it.  She had mentioned that it was often traded for and thus was valuable.  Krudae gave him the small vial of poison she had shot him with.  It only had a few doses left, but it was her ...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 068 - Finishing things up

Batrire spat on the ground.  She had already cursed for a solid minute, and Max almost pulled out a piece of paper to write down some of the ones she had said.

“That doesn’t leave us many choices, does it?” Fowl asked as he watched Tanila tapping her chin.

“Batrire’s right,” Tanila answered.  “It does suck goblin nuts, but we really can’t wait more than a day or two.  We need to do the boss today if we are going to do it and then leave by tomorrow or...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 048 - Struggles everywhere

“My name is Tioanoe.”

Pammon had stopped growling and moved his head about four feet from the woman.

Kaen nodded as he gave a smile. Tioanoe’s voice had somehow not trembled at all when she said that.

Kaen stood there, watching her as she kept her eyes on his feet.

“Why did you attack me?”

She winced at his question and seemed to glance toward her spear a few yards away.

“We meant to rob you and take your equipment.  You are on our land and...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 067 - Webs that unravel

Max constantly had to convince everyone in the inn's main room that he was fine.  It was so bad he finally took his food to his room.  Tomorrow he needed to run an errand after the dungeon, and right now he wanted to research the boss for the one they were in.

They hadn’t planned on killing the boss yet; instead, they were farming the dungeon and waiting for everyone to decide what skill they wanted to choose for level twenty-five.

The kemonomimi boss had four possible...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 047 - Harsh lands

You know we will be back, so stop worrying.

Kaen patted the same scale he had thousands of times as they flew above the clouds.

I won't lie since you will know if I do.  What we are about to do differs from what we have trained for.  Elies didn’t teach us how to interact with other dragons.  He didn’t tell us anything other than where to travel.

Tharnok did.  Every day, he was abrasive. There wasn’t a moment that he...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 066 - The problem with skill choices

Max’s plan had worked almost exactly as he had hoped.

He went in stealthed. Right before he got to the first warrior, Fowl ran forward, getting their attention and using his massive shield to block the initial attacks from the archers.

A single strike of Max’s sword cut the warrior's leg off, sending it tumbling to the ground.  The moment it was down, Max took off running for the archers, who he set upon.

The moment Max got close he cast his fire area of effect spel...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 046 - A hard goodbye

Congratulations, hugs, kisses, and tears were shared by all except Pammon and Callie, who ignored the adults, choosing to wrestle with each other.

Lady Hurem had prepared a small meal with only four courses.

Hess and Lord Hurem were taking great delight in their child's marriage, discussing the future and what it would hold.

Sulenda and Lady Hurem were already discussing the announcement of this union and a place they could call home and raise children.

Dropping the sword in his left hand, Max felt his hand shaking as he reached for the shaft he could see with his right eye.  Grabbing it, he hesitated.  He saw Fowl fighting one of the archers, and the other, which must have shot him, was nocking another arrow.

Bending down, he grabbed the sword he had just dropped and sprinted toward the archer.  It fired a shot, but he used his sword to deflect it to the side as he closed the distance.

He didn’t want to kill it ...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 045 - A private affair

Lord Hurem had sent a servant to tell his wife and Ava to wait a bit longer.

Kaen watched as his soon-to-be father-in-law read a note, his fingers shaking.

“Everything ok?”

The older man chuckled, put the note in his vest pocket, and smiled.  Unconsciously, he wiped his hand on the outside of his new vest one of the servants had brought him.

“As I am sure you will quickly learn, women are not always the most patient.  Especially in regards to matters li...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 044 - An unexpected trap

Most of the afternoon and evening were spent in the air, above the clouds forming, the rain coming as the season changed.

Dark clouds loomed to the east, a forbidding sign as they drifted over the mountains, absorbing water from the lake on the opposite side.

Tell me the truth.  You are afraid.

Kaen couldn’t hide the fear of what this journey would bring.  The trip itself was going to be long and hard.  The map he had from Elies, compared to...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 064 - Mistakes happen to us all

“I’m on it!” Max shouted as he cast an ice bolt at the kemonomimi that had run past Fowl and was sprinting at Tanila.

The ice bolt struck it in its back, not damaging it much, but enough to slow it down and draw its attention off their mage.

Fowl had two male cat warriors on him, and Max had dispatched one already, but the fact that his current target had completely ignored Fowl was a new experience.  Stealth wasn’t worth it if enemies were going to attack their back-...

Bardunac looked through the three bags the group had set on his stone counter.  The dwarf had a little stubble starting to show on his chin, and he absently scratched it, words failing to come.

The four of them stood there, smiling as the alchemist shook his head in disbelief.

“All of this? I’d gladly take it, but I can’t afford to buy all this right now! I don’t think anyone in town could afford to buy all this.”

Having not stopped his head from shaking side to side, Kaen rolled his eyes once more as he fidgeted with his mug.

Originally I had them discarding the rings for fear of what would happen if they turned them in.  Such a monster has not been seen in a long time and them defeating it would be impressive.

However - I can easily fix that and they can keep it for a long time to come.  The rewards (some $ and points for rank ups) would be given later when eventually turned in.

Max’s vision slowly returned.  The odor of burnt flesh was the only thing he could smell.

Blinking his eyes, Max saw Batrire, Tanila, and Fowl standing over him.

“Hey…” he said, his voice croaking.

A sigh came from Batrire, and he saw the relief on the other two's faces.
