Ahh, this has quickly become one of my favorite techniques I've picked up. The continuous- view split-panel action really sells movement. Here Mr. Thorton has just left class to handle some... business. This shot accomplishes two things at once. It shows you the character moving across the environment as he marches toward his destination, and it shows him getting ready. Sleeves are rolled up. Tie is coming off. No thought balloons or dialog necessary for this set of shots!

Juuust about done with this page. This one went through a round of revisions yet again. As a way to close out Billy's segment I needed him to gloat over his self-imposed victory, but I wasn't feeling the characterization. Billy is the son of a Police officer (not that it's important to the story, but it helps explain his backpack full of handcuffs and weapons), and as a way to solidify that aspect of his character I thought I'd be funny to have him put a police hat on while he boasts about it...

Drew a bonus full body picture of the new girl from Persona 5. If you are unfamiliar with this character don't worry, I'm not either. All you need to know is that she wears a mask and she's a gymnast... so I couldn't resist.

Apologizes for the brief silence between now and the previous update. I struggled with this page a little, redrawing it a few times in the process. I tested out various layouts trying to get the sequence to end on the exact note that I wanted while still conveying all the information I needed both visually, and in dialog. Never an easy task.

Conflict abound. Went back and forth a few times on this page trying to get the panel sequencing right.... flipping characters, moving panels, and redrawing art. Not entirely sure I got what I wanted out of this page, or if it even works, but sometimes I just can't tell until I get the dialog inside those balloons... Now what could they be talking about?

Classic pose, new angle. I couldn't resist myself one more time. Each time I've tried drawing her slightly differently. Not just in looks, but in my approach as well. This time I tried to create a quicker drawing by working on fewer layers and skipping the line step, essentially taking the sketch to a "finished" product, so to speak. Lately I've been exploring different ways to organize my workflow. In this example I've been sectioning off panels and working on them one by one, instead of building the whole page up at once. I decided to do some portrait practice to see if I could continue to push my style, so here is a drawing of Mia Fey (character from Ace Attorney), because really, she is just the hottest.
The takeaway from this experiment? Style to me is about confidence. Not necessarily in yourself, but in your decisions. You must make bold confident moves and commit to them. But...

The first panel was originally meant to fill the entire upper half of the page, but I decided to slice in a close up shot of Marvin so we could get a more personal look at his emotional state and what he's feeling. I was looking for a way to amplify this scene and thought this would be a fun place to give myself a little challenge, so I drew this shot with a fish eye perspective. Normally you wouldn't be able to fit this much action into a single panel like this, but the distorted perspective allows you to see more detail along the peripheral. I don't think this effect would work well with any shot, but I think it brings an interesting dynamic effect here. Hmmmm, I wonder where else this might be useful...

This page came together in a rather unusual way. I started with Envy's pose and planned the page composition around her panel. I wanted to get a solid sense of foreshortening as she applies her... pressure... to our lead character.
Panel 3 was probably the trickiest, as I needed to get a single shot of Envy removing her shoe and Mi-hee looking snarky. A cartoonish approach seemed to serve me best here.
