Gunwild: I love the hair in panel 4.

Psu: It's one of my favorites too. I drew very differently in those days, you can see it in the way Cassiopeia has more defined muscles and stuff. But the demands of the comic updating frequently, and the way I wanted to draw characters with more clarity, means in terms of her body she looks very different. But I think part of that is just how her character evolved in the writing too. I wouldn't say she's a totally differen...

For the Flan Who Has Everything, Page 3

Gunwild: This is a bit of a wordy comic, I know, but I want to make sure everybody sees it, because Psu sure did a cool-looking alien design!

Psu: Guh, it's like 4am. What page are we commenting on?

Gunwild: This one!

Gunwild: As I recall, I originally wrote this as her straddling the gun in a more ecchi way.

Psu: Heh, I think there's still an original sketch where it was clearly more "Mechanical Bull" in inspiration. But I think a couple of things made more sense at the time with what direction I wanted her to be on the gun when I was drawing the actual...

Art Update No. 9

Gunwild: This seemed appropriate after this month's pinup went up. Recognize HER, old chum?

Psu: I totally and completely forgot about that drawing until you showed it to me again just now. I didn't even remember that Theira was ever NOT an alien.

Gunwild: Well, this was a really good idea, but at the time we decided that an alium character would have more possibilities and add more variety to Maddy's crew.

Art Update No. 8

This was actually drawn years ago! It's always been canon that Cassiopeia's wristbands and ankle bands are the only physical clothes she wears. They emit the rest of her outfit using holofields. It hasn't really come up, but we want to go into it more - and explain that yes, as we shown in the Halloween comic, it can be used to help with disguises.

In fact, this old doodle is why she was written as dressing up like La Llorona in 2016-11-10 06:49:22 +0000 UTC View Post

Page Commentary No. 8

Psu: This is really a perfect example of the kind of paneling I don't do anymore. And it's not because I don't like it, but because the needs of each story have changed a lot. If you were going to do a story where a girl is flying through Zero G and latching onto a giant space ship, you've gonna get different ways to show that than a girl on a motorcycle.

Gunwild: One thing people might not know (or care about) is that in scripts, I usually give a number of panels and the images ...

Gunwild: That's a lot of characters to introduce in one panel!

Psu: I remember pretty fondly about how you described in detail a whole lot of this crew. And this was knowing that, at the time of writing this, these characters were just going to be one shot figures.

Gunwild: More recently I've been trying not to overdo it when describing things in scripts. But I think we had enough nice back and forth about all these people - and have gotten enough mileage out of them...

Art Update No. 6b

Here's a bonus behind-the-scenes art update, before Halloween is out: the costume we didn't go with for Ashley. This is what was written in the script - the little devil-horned girl dressed as an angel. I thought it was a cute idea, but then the idea for dressing her as Princess Leia with her horns helping the cinnamon bun hair was too good to pass up!

Update: Now free for everybody!

Gunwild: I'd probably have paced these pages differently if I'd known they were gonna be in a webcomic released a page at a time. Or I'd have tried, anyway, but that was a whole separate skill to learn as we went.

Psu: here are a lot of things we do differently now. For one I can't even remember the last time we did a narration. But there are still a number of things I'm kind of proud of here even though they don't all make sense. But since I knew I was working purely in black an...

You rad $7 and up donors get this secret concept art today, which is actually work done to design the costumes for the costumes in the (8/22/16) Halloween page! Nizka was gonna be President of Earth, so her flag has Earth's astrological symbol on it, but we wound up changing that for the final design. Meanwhile, Ashley's curved horns were easily turned into cinnamon bun hair as Princess Leia. Even Mr. Shnouf has dressed up! I like his costume best, personally.

Page Commentary No. 5

Gunwild: We were just talking about how we need to re-establish that Cassiopeia is actually really, really intuitively good at astrodynamics. So she can do things like shoot a moving drone fighter with a harpoon.

Psu: Looking at this page, it's pretty cool how different the style is. The fact that the edges of her figure are still done in pencil and all the texture is left in the negative space is really different than any of the current pages. But you might notice how really lim...

Gunwild: This is from before her outfit was finalized.

Psu: Oh I like that outfit, AND the blue hair. I think you nixed the blue hair.

Gunwild: The quote in the alt-text lets you know I thought the use of magnetic harpoons in Snow Crash was awesome. The fifth panel also has the sound effect "FPOON" because of that one Key & Peele skit with the continental breakfast.

The lines are given weight when they become final, and so the figures gain definition.

Here's the redline phase, where sketches become more concrete shapes, "corrected" from the sketchy, loose ones. This about determines where the final lines will go on the page.

WiP Page Update 9/28/2016

So, this is the sketch phase. The script is turned into some loose art so we can know what the page will look like. This also involves the critical step of the layout being established.

There are a lot of things to consider in addition to including the stuff the script calls for drawings of - for instance, where the dialogue will fit once all the other details are in place.

(Personally, for that very reason, I try to use no more than 25 word in any given bubble. More than that, and...
