The Death Star(s)

I don’t know why I called this image “The Death Stars.”

It’s likely a combination of the effect of Daniella's formidable, erm. Headlights that will attract attention, and then the physical roundness and the nipple remind me of the Star Wars death star.

When I name images, I frequently choose whatever comes to mind, and I have to admit I chuckled a little at this…

I love to shoot with daylight in places like this because of the constrictions.

I would never light images like this in the studio.
But here, I’m forced to work with the light available, find a background that can work, and place the models in that environment.
And then make it work.

It’s a challenge, but it’s also rewarding when you do something you have to work hard for, right?

I’ve always been conflicted about shooting something like this, but I also know that when something intrigues me and someone feels that something is “scandalous,” I feel even more inclined to shoot it.

I want to prove (to myself) I can.

We tried it on this set, and I like the results, but I’m not entirely satisfied with them.

Pastel Canyon

I managed to meet up and shoot with the Gorgeous Zulema while in Vegas last month and drove out to Valley of Fire, one of my favorite shooting spots.

This particular canyon is magical, especially in the morning before the sun creeps down and reaches the walls.

But lighting aside, at midday (I went with the family some days later), it would be impossible to get even two minutes without a hoard of prudish, easily insultable people walking through the canyon.

Or actually, It's not a dungeon; it's a Kiln from the Stoke-on-Trent Studio, The Kiln in the UK.
It's a brilliant location, though.

I changed the mood slightly from the original and liked the bluish tones better.

I shot these with my Sony A7RIV and Sigma 24-70mm ƒ2.8 at 1/80sec ƒ4 at 200 ISO. Even though the De-Noise function is getting very good, I'm a die-hard "keep the ISO low" guy, even though I may need to reevaluate this sometime soon.

Loulou in green

Again, my sofa set and light from two windows, but with an overcast sky outside, everything becomes more moody.

I messed up something when shooting these.
If you look closely, you can see that the first image has a much bigger depth of field than the others.

It’s because I accidentally left the ISO on 4000.

So yeah, the first image was shot with a 4000 ISO setting, and the others with ISO 200.

It looks hideous in the raw, but after running it through the Lightr...

Kory Dance aka. Korydark

Last month, I picked up Kory Dance, a Mexican Ballerina, at the airport, drew to the studio and shot for some hours, and drove her back to the airport afterward as she was leaving for Barcelona.

I would have loved more time and the opportunity to shoot outdoors.

D. Genevieve is very pale of nature, so I thought it could be interesting to create something brighter on my sofa set than I’d naturally do. And I used an 85mm ƒ1.2 to get a shallow depth of field to keep only the exciting bits in focus and let the rest fade into oblivion.

I love the expression in this image of Loulou.
Something incongruent with the pose seems a bit sexy (yes, it’s “the booty chair”), but there is a duality in the expression that elevates the image beyond just a lovely booty.

The last time I shot with Dixie, I put her in “the booty chair,” but we quickly decided she needed more space to move, so I brought in an ottoman.

She’s wearing a wig in these.
While I don’t usually do that, I decided that she was a new woman with new hair and no face, so I removed her most distinctive tattoos as well.

On black holes and quantum physics

Capella Modeling from a sofa set.

This was not my best photographic session (photographically): Capella came straight from an exam (in fluid dynamics if you must know), and we had limited time.
But we also ended up talking for a couple of hours; she’s studying to be an astrophysicist, has a tattoo related to quantum mechanics on her forearm, and we had some fascinating discussions about how mass can dissociate from black holes, superstring theory, inflatable universes, etc.

In case you wonder; yes, I changed the upholstery's color from green to those; it seemed more fitting with the color scheme in this image.

These are more on the erotic side than the artsy side. I’ll happily admit I like to use the fine line between the two as a skipping rope 😜

I wanted to create some darkness in this set, so I set up my large Fresnel spot - no flash, only the pilot light, and went to town.

I’m a sucker for mystery, and Ashleigh has that in spades.
