Koopa Queen Brioche

Pencil and inks for an upcoming commission. I was tasked with drawing the commissioner as a Koopa Queen. I had done this before, only with Princess Peach, the most obvious/suitable Koopafication target. This is a little trickier, because without elements from a recognizable character to springboard from, it may end up just looking like Bowser in a dress. But what a dress, am I right? It's fun to see how many Mario universe elements I can make into motifs.

I didn’t expect to finish this piece so fast, but here’s a WIP/thumbnail comparison of a commission that’s already up on DeviantArt. I’m happy to say that all the body language of the thumbnail carried over to the final image. I think I just might be getting good at this whole drawing thing you guys!

I hope you don’t think I’m phoning it in with today’s doodle, but I think I packed a lot of personality into a 2.5” pencil sketch. I can explain more once I have a more detailed drawing to go with this crude thumbnail.

Shangelley

Through some bizarre mishap, Angela and Shelley have fused! Unfortunately, I think this one puts their attributes at a net loss. Loss of intelligence (I mean, Angela’s no dummy, but Shelley dominates in book smarts), loss of height, and Shelley calculated science will constantly be at odds with Angela’s impulsive witchcraft. Who knows what this combo is capable of?

Fore Edge

I learned what this part of a book is called just to brag about it. Sure, I may eschew page numbers and tables of contents, but that doesn’t mean I leave my readers without easy access to each chapter of Volume 4. All the chapter breaks have white pages, so it’s easy to see where they are. I’d like to say I did this on purpose, but I’m not that smart. But check back in another four to five years. You’ll see this feature in Volume 5, mark my words!

Overall I had a good time at Fan Expo Boston, but it ain’t the old Boston Comic Con. But this exchange could have happened at any show. I poured a lot into making Volume 4.
