A Soldier's Life - Book 1

The heavier rewrites are in the first ten chapters.  It had been a few rough days as someone pirated the book to place it on Amazon Kindle.  Amazon finally, after half a dozen emails, is taking down the pirated copy.  To protect the work, I posted it as a Kindle book myself, and that will hopefully be up tomorrow.

UPDATE:  BOOK IS ON AMAZON KINDLE!!!!

Starship Engineer - 3 - The Naval Academy

Chapter 3 The Naval Academy

We dropped off the Marines first on a high G world in the same system as the Naval Academy.  It was going to be hard for my brother. Persia VI was a lower G world, meaning we were not strong but taller than most normal humans.  The engineering academy was on a massive space station next to a naval repair and refit space yard.  My group was shuffled to the Academy when we docked.  Our engineering class had almost 50,000 students entering. &...

Starship Engineer - 2 - Certifications

Chapter 2 Certifications

I was put in a bunk room on the transport ship with three young women and two men.  They were all from Persia VI.  Two of the young girls were drafted to the pilot school for gunships, which were basically heavy fighters.  The two young men were both going to comms school, responsible for radar stations and the navigation of starships.  The last woman, Gwen, was going to engineering school for life support systems like me.  She had mediu...

Starship Engineer - 1 - Homeworld

Chapter 1 Homeworld

I was born on an agricultural world, Persia VI.  It was the sixth planet from a yellow star in the corner of the Union of Humanity.  The Union controlled over 200 inhabited star systems but was far from being a power of the human race.  Very few of the systems actually had an inhabitable planet.

My father and uncle were assigned as teens with their wives to a harvester as corporate employees.  The harvester was a massive behemoth that we all...

A Soldier's Life - 91 - Konstantin's Path (POV)

Chapter 91 Konstantin (POV Path to Legionnaire)

Konstantin walked through the city gates from his small house outside the city walls.  He enjoyed his job teaching language and history to the children.  Not many parents in the city sent their children after they learned to read and write.  They would rather have them apprenticed in a trade.  So, it was rare for children older than ten to be in his classes.   In his opinion, the school was more of a means for...

Chapter 94

“Wake up legionnaire.  Lucien wants you down in the stables,” A gruff voice said, standing over my bed.

It was still dark, but the voice was familiar. I asked, “Adrian, why didn’t you knock?”

“Tace wood door.  And I got a set of keys to all the legionnaire rooms,” he jingled the keys as emphasis.  “Get up and help prepare the horses.  Say your goodbyes.  We should be back in two weeks.”  He walked out, having issued ...

Chapter 93 The Library

My combat senses awakened me as the bathroom door opened with a creak.  The water was still warm, so I had not slept too long.  My eyes spotted my maid attendant in the archway.  Lareen was in her heavy green dress, “You are back.”  She said cautiously, and I detected a note of—maybe happiness.

“Just for the night.  I am off on a mission for two weeks in the morning,” I turned the nob to add more hot water, but it was cold....

Chapter 90 Choosing a Time Affinity Spell Form

I proceeded through the woods using the sun and a blue moss to guide my direction of travel. The blue moss, Konstantin told me, only grows on the north side of rocks and trees because it needs the light of the blue moon, Poseidon’s Tear, to grow. I did not understand how the moon could only appear in the north sky at night, but I took him for his word as it seemed to work as a navigation tool.

Mid-morning, I took a few moments to bu...

Chapter 92 Alchemist Quest

The city of Sobral did not seem any different.  It felt like I had been gone months and not just four days.  As I walked into the city, maybe the city guards looked more professional with clean uniforms and armor.  I reached the Citadel’s main gate and was not stopped as I entered.  A voice rang out from my right, “Soldier!  Why did you not question that man?”  An angry and abrasive Firth came storming out of an archway in t...

I had just told the attendant at the desk that I was in the city to join a clan.  Vida was upset, “Caleb, the size of an orc, is a status symbol.  And your skin is white, making you part of the ice orc clans that conquered this world and most of the inhabited moon.  Every powerful ice orc clan in the city will send a representative to see you.  Some will check your fighting prowess by challenging you when you walk the city to see if y...

Chapter 156 Champion Maestro

Gundella was clearly impressed and thought she had gained some consideration from me.  I was left in the library to read, as I guess male orcs were only known to be good for one ejaculation at a time and needed time to recover.  Pandora had read the two books on orc sexual habits and thought I had been too gentle with Tevega.  According to the books, orcs were more animalistic.  They are more like dogs, building into a frenzy and going ba...

An Incubus Life - 155 - Rincewind's Surprise

Chapter 155 - Rincewind's Surprise

Rincewind was getting too old for this crap.  He had retired to Earth a few thousand years ago.  It was a nice out-of-the-way planet on the twenty-third layer.  It was meaningless in the larger scheme of things.  Just a grain of sand at the bottom of an ocean.  He had lived a thousand lifetimes and just wanted to mentor some children and watch them and their descendants grow.

Now, in the past month, he had been forced to ...

Chapter 89 Harvest

I had not meant to fall asleep. But after staying up all night and the fight with the manticores, my exhaustion overtook me. My dreams were filled with talking manticores flying all over the kingdom and spreading the word of my abilities to all who would listen in the coarse language of the stone giants. Soon, all the Hounds in the Empire were pursuing me to be dragged before the Emperor. I woke when I fell off my chair and scrambled to my feet.

Chapter 141 Homeward Bound

The Princess had her luggage delivered to the Maelstrom, and by the sheer volume, I thought she might be moving to Skyholme permanently.  A messenger from the Prince arrived with thirty-five platinum as I had confirmed acceptance of the posting in the Adventurers Guild to escort the Princess.  My metal sense told me the coins were only eighty-eight percent pure, a common tactic by kingdoms to stretch their coin.  They were minted with the image ...

I didn’t know how long I would have to wait for the Prince to move or decide.  We had almost an entire day before the aether crystals would be charged to make the run to Skyholme. The Guildmaster seemed certain that the Prince was interested in the Skyholme Islands by his reactions.

I asked Leda and Talia, “Can you go into the city and see if our pirate cargo would sell better here or in Skyholme.”

Leda laughed, “You should get a com...

Chapter 154 Whispering Rock Demands

The orc library was not large, and the books all had thick leather bindings.  I was hoping to be left alone to peruse the books, but two female dark gray-skinned servants flanked the door, ready to respond to any request.  They refused to leave, and maybe they were here to make sure I did not damage or steal anything as well.  They were both young and fit and had attractive bodies—for orcs.  The one on the left also couldn’t hi...

Chapter 170 Deployment

During the next few weeks, Edmund kept a close eye on Desdemona as the expedition prepared.  He monitored her actions and did not interfere. She remained on task, mostly focused on crewing her three Fateweavers: Excalibur, Indomitable, and Valkyrie. The captain of the Valkyrie was assigned by me, a human captain by the name Nora Planter. The two Leopard-class ships were captained by Garrison Saku and Fiona Agave. Both had served on the Void Phoenix.

Chapter 169 Syvlan Alliance?

Desdemona was on a shuttle heading to the Fateweaver to meet with me. The Sylvan had told her that I had arrived back in the system days ago, but she did not contact me. I assumed it was because she did not want me to play a role in the negotiations. The shuttle was one of ours and was piloted by Desdemona. She landed in our bay and was immediately taken into custody.

She was brought to medical and underwent a lengthy series of tests to make sure she h...

Chapter 90 Choosing a Time Affinity Spell Form

I proceeded through the woods using the sun to guide my direction of travel. Mid-morning, I took a few moments to bury the Bartiradian elf woodsman. I removed a box of earth, placed him in the grave, and then added the earth back on top of him. I was not sure of his customs, but I hoped my efforts would at least end one of my disturbing dreams.

I tried to practice my skill at moving silently in the woods, but the effort and the slower...

A Soldier Life - 87 Manticores

Chapter 87 Manticores

We entered Lyonis’ small cabin.  It was not as orderly or as well constructed as Maveith’s.  It also had a strong smell of ammonia, like dried urine.  In his cabin, he had a single table and a small bed as his only furnishings.  Maveith sighed deeply at the mess and smell, “Tell me what happened from the beginning.”

Lyonis sat on his bed, cradling his arm.  “Klinton said he found a number of mauled deer with their guts eaten...

The manticore’s voice was guttural, as I would expect from its flat ogre-shaped face.  He was not talking to me but Maveith and in a language I could not understand.  It was a few harsh phrases before Maveith responded in the same language.  Two exchanged words, and my grip got sweaty on my hilt.  The smaller manticore was lying down in misery, and I think Maveith’s first arrow did more damage than I thought.

His arrows were ...

Konstantin spent the morning walking with me through the northern woods.  “The only large predator tracks were the giant weasels.  You should be fine if you stay in my prescribed area.”   He set some boundaries he thought I should not go past, about four miles from the northern walls of the Citadel.  Then he left me.

I thought it was a ruse, so I was constantly on high alert, thinking Konstantin may be shadowing me.  I started g...

My dreams started pleasant enough but did not end that way.  I was riding a giant weasel into battle.  The soft fur and rhythmic ripples on its body, as it ran across the field were invigorating and mesmerizing.  As we ran through the woods, I saw Konstantin hanging from a tree tangled in rope and trying to extract himself.  I laughed at him as I...
