One of the Truths about aging is you will start to resent the Youth. I’ve always known this. My parents and aunts/uncles used to make commentary about my generation when I was a teenager. But when I spent time around my grandparents, they were still hanging on to bullshit about my parents’ generation. The pattern was pretty easy to recognize, even as a kid.
“But this generation is different!”
Of course it is. And the generation before than was different, too. They’re ...

2024-09-15 04:00:52 +0000 UTC View PostHey, Joseph Fink here.
Years ago, I had the thought that it would be fun to write a Night Vale episode with Molly Quinn and Lusia Strus, because I thought they both had great voices that would be very interesting contrasted against each other. Then we cast TL Thompson as Lee Marvin, and their voice got added into the mix in my head. I wanted to hear these three voices together. Gradually I decided that a Night Vale episode was too small an idea. I wanted to make something new with these...

Earlier this year, Jeffrey, Brie and I sat down for a writers meeting to discuss some general plans for the first part of the Night Vale year. We don’t like to lock ourselves into a plot just yet, instead we like to come up with some general concepts that we want to look at for the year, and then see where we’re at after we’ve written a few episodes. This more organic approach to story building allows us to see what is interesting to us as writers before we start building out a more str...

Anyway, as yuzh, we'll be talking about whatever, but that could include Night Vale stuff if you wanted it to!
Here's the Zoom link for today's hang-out! (waiting room in effect till 4pm)
I'm finally doing it, y'all. I'm reading Moby Dick, by Herman Melville. The whole fucking thing. My copy is a little over 600 pages with some pretty small type.
I'm halfway through it, and I have to say: Not Bad. Well, like, incredible, but as a reading experience, it's got its ups and downs. First off, it's super readable. Short chapters, minus the 40-something-page digression where Ishmael talks about all the different kinds of whales there are. And for 173-year-old writing, pretty a...
2024-08-26 14:00:15 +0000 UTC View PostI've been wanting to write a whole episode for DEB for a long time. A couple years ago, I thought I would make it so that she's Cecil's replacement host (like Joan Rivers for Johnny Carson back in the 80s). But I never got around to writing that, which is probably good, because I don't know that it makes sense for Deb to be on a track to become a talk-show host.
Deb is the master of the deal, a spokeshaze, a sales god. So of course, she would make a name for herself doing that very job...

In the first Welcome to Night Vale novel, we have an adventure in the Night Vale library that, for the first time, describes that library's interior. When writing the rough draft of that chapter, I drew on what is still the archetypical library in my head, which is the library I grew up with. The Camarillo public library, about an hour outside of Los Angeles.
There is now a new Camarillo library, which is slick and beautiful and features a children's section with a pirate ship that you...

A while back, we announced the Welcome to Night Vale Roleplaying Game. And then we went quiet for a long time because developing a game is not a fast process.
But the game is almost ready to go, and we are excited to bring it to all of you out there.
Which is why our friends at Renegade Game Studios are launching a crowdfunding campaign for the game on BackerKit on October 1! This is your chance to get on the ground floor of this game developed by experienced designers in close co...

2024-08-01 12:00:12 +0000 UTC View PostMy housemate Nathan and I were in San Francisco this past spring—the city where we both used to live when we met in film school in the early 2000s. We try to go back every year to visit old friends and hang out in our old neighborhood. For a city that’s changed in so many ways since those days, our old neighborhood, the Richmond District, has stayed pretty much the same. It’s comforting to browse the same discount stores, eat at the same cafes, walk out to my favorite thinking rock at C...

Yearbooks, comics, football cards, photos, etc. You know the drill. It's really fun looking through all of these old things, but kind of a burden to have to make the decision myself on what to keep. I live in a NYC apartment, so space is a premium.

It's of course, a funny concept and a hilarious show. And it led to one of the greatest Thanksgiving traditions of all time: Till Death Do Us Blart.
