Today's Gesture Drawing

In pursuit of adding variety to my poses, I turned my body slightly away from my newsprint taped onto my mirror. The resulting drawing was only slightly different than usual, with a slight elongation of perspective as I drew.

Proving that contortion of my body while trying to draw results in distortion in the process!

Selfie in Three Parts

Gulf coast storm swept through

Bringing the smell of the sea.

Wet, warm, yet cooling.

I hadn’t expected there to be rain last night. I stepped outside and enjoyed it from a dry spot. Perhaps the heat of the day that preceded it, or the amount of water that came with it, but there was a peculiar swirling of cool breeze accompanied it. It was lovely, and still on my mind as I did my drawing and pic.

Selfie in Three Parts

I’ll begin with this haiku:

In contemplation.

Or was i picking my nose?

They may be the same…

However, I was not picking my nose. I was trying to strike a contemplative pose. As the picture developed, I couldn’t help but laugh at it! Then I recalled times (nothing specific, I’m just sure it’s happened) seeing a person that thinks they’re unobserved, wholeheartedly picking at their noses. Like at stoplights in the next car, as if glass is not transparent. <...

Wednesday Walk

Switching it up a bit today. This isn't technically a walk, but this surf skating video is in the same spirit of freedom as my regular Wednesday Walks!

Surf skating is sometimes used by professional surfers to maintain fitness and aptitude in the off season, when getting into the water is not an option. I did not have the option of cooling off in the water on this hot summer day. But my board is called a YOW (Your Own Wave), so I figure I can make my waves and just pretend I'm chi...

A haiku:

Birds begin chirping .

Pale blue creeps on horizon .

I watch the sun rise.

I was up early this morning. Before the sun. So I enjoyed a cup of coffee outside as the sun came up. It was the coolest part of the day at 70 degrees Fahrenheit!

Tuesday Update

It's a hot day today! In between projects, I've taken to a shady spot (my favorite spot) in the yard to update you on what's been going on!

Catch up on pottery, livestreams, home improvement projects, and social media.

I hope your week is shaping up beautifully!

On the Easel

My sketch for tonight’s livestream is ready! I had actually started on a different logo, but that sketch is more detailed and will require mor time. Rather than rush through the sketch, I opted for a more simplified design.

I like using the live-streaming to work on pieces of pop culture that I have some sentimental attachment to. The twitter logo will soon be a thing of the past, and it’s the platform that really allowed me to engage with people who were really interested in my ar...

Un-Still Life

A still life, in artistic terms is a work of art of inanimate objects. Often including things such as fruits, flowers, vessels like vases or baskets, for example. I thought of traditional still lifes as I gathered up some fallen fruit.

I created this unconventional "un-still" life to play with the concept just a bit. I had fun with this, finding an artistic way to express and share a task that I needed to do anyway!

I hope you enjoy it!

Putting it all out there

I have spoken many times about the electronic magic that is in our modern world.  Being able to connect with people from all corners of the globe.  People that care about me and appreciate the things that I can create.  It's amazing that all of you have found me and my work and I am so appreciative that you value me and that I can be here for you. Most of you have found me through twitter and things over there are getting weirder all the time.  It scares me to think that t...

Drawing Today's Gesture Drawing

Standing in front of the mirror again today for a gesture drawing!

I tried to create a bit of moodiness with the lighting choice. It seems to translate as if the warm light of the golden hour (it could be morning or evening) is seeping into the room through every window. All set to music. "Slapperoni Pizza" by Jobii. I found the tune fun and easy going.

A haiku:

All day and all night,

The buzzing sound of mating calls.

Cicadas singing.

The buzz of the cicadas has gotten increasingly louder the past couple of weeks, as more and more of them join the chorus. It's one of those subtle changes that I'm glad to notice as the season progresses.

I had a bit of fun with perspective for today's instant pic. A bug's eye view! I set up the camera on a tripod with timer on, pointed it upward and climbed onto an o...

Wednesday Walk: Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge

Celebrate freedom and equality in this walk across a covered bridge!

Built in the 1840s by freed slave and noted bridge builder Horace King. Approximately 2,500 wooden pegs hold the intersections of this bridge together! It smells of creosote, and its shade cools the air as I walk across it. It's very much like walking through time and history, and I'm happy to share this amazing bridge with you!

On the Easel

I tried a different exercise in gesture drawing today. These are a series of 30 second poses. It was a bit of a challenge, so I'll consider it a warm up.

The first image is the first page. I can't tell how many are there, as they're drawn one on top of another. By the time I flipped the page for the next set of poses, I was filling a little more confident, and gave myself a little more room for more.

I intend to continue working on this and improving!

Tuesday Update

Happy Taco Tuesday! Here's a look at everything I've been up to.

Including a sneak peak at a couple places and sites I've visited recently, like bridges and giant flowers. More of that footage will be used for other projects, so watch for those!

Also, a bit of home improvement.

I hope your week is going well!

A haiku:

Ripe jalepenos.

From the plant and to my plate.

My tastebuds tingle.

Today's instant pic is another fun double exposure taken with the LomoInstant. This time I played a bit with my proximity to the lens.

Also, jalepenos from the garden are delicious!

I hope your weekend has been awesome!

Bonus Walk

It's been hot out! So much so that it's been hard to get motivated to take a walk. But, I took this bonus walk on a super hot and sticky day!

Join me in the heat as I struggle to keep cool under blue skies and a thick canopy of trees next to some swampy marshlands. It's set to music, of course. While I've been working at creating more original music to accompany my work, this is not original music. But I liked the vibe of it with the imagery.

I hope you're keeping cool!

Poetry Reading

This is "In a Cafe" by Richard Brautigan. A brief poem about the simplest task being observed.

I like this poem because it conveys so much with so few words. Makes me wonder how some of the things I do are observed and interpreted.

The way one folds a piece of bread as if it is precious...

Rorschach

Ever in pursuit of experimenting with editing and digital film, I thought I'd try something different! I like to share my process, but sometimes the work I have to do is in fine detail, which may not pick up well on camera. By contrast, it's far more visually interesting watching the beginnings of a painting than the final parts.

I call this Rorschach because it reminds me of the old ink blot tests. The miirrored nature of it really emphasizes the painting and colors. I made the a...

Behind the Scenes

A behind the scenes look at the making of today's gesture drawing.

I like this pose. I think it allows the human form to look long and elegant. In addition to that, it is a pose that I can both hold and draw. This recording of the drawing process is not modified as far as the speed at which it plays is concerned. It's real time. I'm pretty happy with this as a two and a half minute drawing!

A haiku:

Hiding in the shade

Where vines overtook a tree.

It is cool and dark.

It has been increasingly difficult to enjoy time outside due to the heat and humidity. Under a tangle of vines does seem to be a good spot, at least for the amount of time it takes to snap a picture. I've always been fascinated by little spaces like this one. It's a little cramped and low to the ground to stay for too long, though!

Behind the Scenes

I've been playing a bit with double exposure lately. It's easier to achieve on film. In a digital format, however, it's a bit different.

The magic in a digital format happens in the editing process.

A version has to be edited less opaque than another in order to overlay the two.

The result is a shadowy, almost ghost like looking trace of digital film on top of another. I think it's fun to play with.

On another note, I created the background music myself usi...

Wednesday Walk

This Wednesday walk takes me through swamps, over boardwalks, and under gazebos!

It's quiet and peaceful along the water's edge, and I even spotted a turtle as it plopped away safely hidden by the depths of dark water.

Tried a new color balance with this clip, and it's set to smooth and dreamy music. Perfect for a summer walk!

A haiku:

Creativity.

If there is a formula,

I haven't found it.

In all seriousness, I'm realizing that creativity is more of a discipline. While that probably seems obvious, I think that throughout life, I've waited for creativity or inspiration to just find me. As if it was something that just happens. It's more like a discipline or a habit. If I don't commit to it, it atrophies like a weak muscle.

Tuesday Update!

I had an angry bird chirping at me as I filmed this. I'm sure that if I could understand  Thrasher, it would have been explicit.

However, I had no intention of being offensive to the lovely inhabitants of my backyard. My only intention was to share what's been going on with me this week.

I hope your week is off to a great start! Thank you so much for being here, and supporting a living artist!

Selfie in Three Parts

It rained all night long.

Waking me with its murmurs.

Now the morning's cool.

Today's photo is a bit different. I worked on building the model rocket, and hoped to capture a playful mood with the photo. It's not the traditional selfie, in that it doesn't feature my face. But it captures the playful mood I was in!

Poetry Reading of "Sonnet"

Though it came to me later in life, I really appreciate poetry.

I was first introduced to Richard Brautigan in college. Trout Fishing in America was required reading for the brief period that I was an English major. That's a funny thing to think about: the idea that I thought anything other than art could produce the kind of satisfaction that I get from making, creating, and being art. I was insecure about my ability to make art.

It seems that writing and art have made a full circ...

The Garlic Meat Lady from

A poetry reading from Richard Brautigan!

I suppose that there are many things that could be taken in a unique context.

Here,  a poetry reading about preparing meat. The tenderness and care that it can entail, and its possible miscontruel in context.

Or dare I claim that an artist in poetry could misconstrue an observed act? I don't know. But preparing meat doesn't seem to me particularly sexy...

Just as art can often be misconstrued.

A haiku:

It's lawn day today.

I'll mow the overgrown grass.

It will grow, twofold.

As soon as I finished mowing, I came indoors. It immediately started raining. I drew a picture while I took a phone call.

Happy Saturday!
