Your face is going to get stuck like that.

Filming and editing this reminded me of being a kid. I'm not sure if it was because I was pouting or making funny faces, but I remember my mother assuring me that my  face would get stuck.

This video also marks  my first original sound design. I used my kaossilator to create the sound as I watched the visuals.

"Peace"

The creative process is something of a river, I think.

I set a course for where I am going to take an idea. Along the way, the river of creativity takes me around bends, through rapids, over still waters with great depth, down waterfalls. I arrive at a destination similar to but so much more than I'd expected.

It was like that creating this piece. I knew what I wanted to capture in regard to the filming. The magic began when the sunshine  made spectacular lights t...

Taking Creative Control

Every journey starts with the first step, they say. I won't bore you with platitudes, so I'll just jump right in. This Tuesday update is about creative control. My videos that I currently create belong, in part, to someone else. That's because much of the music I use isn't my own. This is the first step in taking back what is mine!

I'm no stranger to music. I credit my brother with teaching me how to sing. He was a young musician/creative in need of back up vocals and he recruited...

Changing the Narrative

I mentioned in my Tuesday update that I'd lost access to some of my more recent data of photos and video. It's slowed my posting. In an effort to get caught up (and hopefully ahead) I've sought out interesting spaces and places for inspiration. It's been an interesting week in that regard. Take the lonely space featured in this video, for example! It reminded me how important one's outlook is. Glass half full vs half empty thinking. An attitude or outlook adjustment can really make a differen...

Rough Draft

I'm calling this a rough draft! I had to test a couple of factors to achieve this. First, it's a test in filming in super high definition and optimum camera settings to capture a jump. Lower settings result in blurs of motion rather than the clarity available when a clip is played back in slow motion. Second, I had to test if I could actually still jump! It's been awhile...

Sulfur Skies

In an effort to challenge my own perception as I create and the perception of how this piece is ultimately viewed (after creation), I walked backwards. The segment of the video that appears I'm walking forward is actually played backwards.

Reflection on Matches

This is "Reflection on Matches". Early morning. I couldn't sleep. I thought I'd get up and try to make something instead of fighting with a restless mind. Since it was still dark, I thought I'd use the lack of light to my advantage. I enjoy creating interesting perspectives in my videos, and playing with time. Thus the use of a mirror, and the slow burn of matches.

Seasons

The seasons are changing. There's no doubt that it's still summer, but there are subtle variations in the smells, sights, and feel of it all. I suppose that's how change sneaks up.

I am so profoundly grateful to you for being here! Thank you for helping to support this living artist! Many appreciate the work of artists, but few actually help support one!

Tuesday Update

Happy September! Just wanted to take the time to elaborate further on some of the things in the video.

At the 0:49 mark, I show some of the work I saw at MOCA Georgia. The artist is Kevin Cole and the show is: "Where Do We Go From Here?". The theme of the show is voting rights. Something I'd believed was no longer an issue in the United States. Recent elections have shined a light on voting rights and suppression that I hadn't realized still existed.

At the 1:15 mark, ...

Works in Progress

Today was a busy day of SLOW progress! It's been awhile since I've shared an update on the handwriting project. Using words as marks for the background instead of brush strokes is very time consuming. I generally work on it an hour or two a day, and I'm almost half way through the surface. So far, it consists of names of my fellow graduates from my BA and my MA. There are also the words from the programs from the graduation ceremonies.

Next up is an old box. It typically holds inc...

Abramovich Method: Swim in a Freezing Body of Water

I live in a region full of small lakes and ponds, however, none of them are naturally occurring and it would be months before any of them get cold. In order to create a semblance close to a freezing body of water, I added 35 pounds of ice to my small pool. The instruction in the Marina Abramovich Method states to do this for 3 minutes. I did. It was shockingly cold!

Spider Stroll

This is a movie created with a series of photos. I was inspired to do this shoot to explore boundaries. Both my own, and the viewers'. This spider is harmless, but rather large. It took several deep breaths and a lot of reassuring myself to adjust to the feel of a spider on the skin. The instinct is to brush away that feeling normally. It seems that it's human nature to avoid that which makes us uncomfortable, rather than explore or think of why a thing is uncomfortable.  This lovely cre...
