On the easel

Continuing work on the Adidas inspired piece! I completed the logo and the frame and board it will be mounted on are drying!

Adidas!

Starting from a comfortable place: a logo that I see everyday!  Logos, along with other pop culture, influence us daily! Seems an appropriate place to start an exploration . Dada and the subsequent art movements like Pop Art, really challenged how we see day to day art! In this video, there are multiple pop culture influences: logo and music!

The exciting conclusion to the Netflix painting! Every time I make something, especially when it’s different from what I usually do, I try to take away some lesson from the process. Otherwise, there wouldn’t really be a point, would there? Anyway, I really enjoyed the process of repetition with the brush strokes in creating both the “N” and the background. But I learned a bit about black paint in the process. I’ve mentioned before that I tend to avoid black paint. I have a history o...

Work in Progress

I spoke a bit about Pop Art in my update yesterday, and I've already begun working on executing my first piece! It was a movement that began way back in the 1950s, and really changed how and what we see as art today. This painting of the Netflix "N" is intended to look a little less neat and pristine than the one that pops up on my television. I want as many shades of black and red as I can mix, and each brush stroke to stand out from the previous. In other words, I want it to look like a pai...

Update for April 6th: Hike and Pop Art

I had the opportunity on Monday to go to Sweetwater Creek State Park, and since rain was expected on Tuesday and today, I jumped on the opportunity to get outdoors! The park is beautiful. It offers trails and nature, history, and it's a filming location for several movies! I did end up with a pretty good scrape on the back of my leg while the camera was rolling. You'll see it in this update!

Also, I've got some plans for incorporating/modifying logos for a pop art series! I share ...

Experimental Painting Time Lapse

My paintings tend to be based in realism, usually with a clear subject: a figure, or landscape for example. I thought I'd try something different. I didn't use brushes, as I normally do. Just a damp, folded cloth and acrylic paint on canvas.

Machines of Loving Grace

This poetry reading is entitled "Machines of Loving Grace". It was recently pointed out to me that algorithms have taken on this role. When we seek out the news of the world, all we seem to get in our internet feeds is bad news. But occasionally, we seek out puppies and baby animals, for example. This injects our feeds with the good. The happy moments that uplift. Providing a much needed injection of the "other", beautiful and lovely.

Taco Tuesday Update: The Art of Editing

Editing video has become just as much an art form for me as my paintings. Here, I describe the process. From idea to shooting to editing, there's a lot of thought and planning and time that goes into a complete video!

Monday Montage

A few clips from my Monday! Chickens, mowing, photography (with the cameras that caught these clips, and my instant cameras), a walk, and flowers!

Instax Test

Continuing with the theme of analog equipment.

I have two cameras that use Fuji Instax instant film. Reminiscent of instant Polaroid film of the 1980s! I'd like to do a video about my instant cameras, but I wanted to do a test to see if I could capture the development process without reflections of lights or the camera that is recording it. I've had some level of difficulty in the past capturing these photos to share them digitally. This test was a success! As with most of my projects, ...

Analog

I'm a fan of analog equipment. This is a clip of my amplifier and record player. The satisfying flip of the switch, the drop of the needle on the record. Perhaps I appreciate that aspect because I've always been very tactile oriented. The record of choice is by Velvet Underground. The album cover features artwork by Andy Warhol. The peel of the banana can be removed, revealing a pink banana beneath. Warhol even played the tambourine for this album! I used a portion of this clip for tomorrow's...

Bubbles!

It was a slightly breezy day and I headed out into the yard with some bubbles! A higher definition setting on the camera enabled some slow motion shots, capturing the lovely and playful shapes and colors of bubbles.

Spring is officially here! What better way to bring in spring than a painting of Spring's best qualities?  A painting in gouache featuring the blossoms on the peach tree!

Work in Progress

I’m working on a painting inspired by the beautiful colors and light of spring! This is the background and initial layer in gouache for a landscape. The peach blossoms are bright and pink against the changing backdrop of colors of a rainy week! I found the colors so inspiring that I thought to try my hand at it!

Monday Montage

A montage of video clips from a sunny Monday! Temperatures dropped to freezing this weekend leaving the delicate Chinese Magnolias brown and wilted, but there are herbs coming up in the garden, and the chickens are happily laying eggs after a winter reprieve. I played with my pocket knife and stylophone, and as always, attempted to get ahead with filming. I hope your week is off to a great start!

This Week

Happy Friday! Throughout the week, I film a lot! So much of the footage I capture is never used, so I thought I'd compile some of it into a little montage! Some work, some play, some weather, a little bit of everything!

I’m taking Sister Shotgun to a new medium! Gouache makes paintings more illustrative. It’s much smaller than I typically work, so that’s the biggest adjustment!

Strange Western

I've been working in the western movie theme a lot this week with all the editing I've been doing for upcoming Sister Shotgun & Coyote Priestess themed video pieces. I thought this would be a good time to showcase some of the tests I've done along the way, and I may as well make them fun!

I’ve been inspired by Tom Sachs’ Rocket Factory to create some rockets of my own! The Rachael Padilla rocket factory is in full swing! Plus, they are themed in keeping with recent work inspired by Wile E Coyote and his favorite at home shopping service!

I have been spending a huge amount of time editing recently. I'm learning new skills and improving my overall level of knowledge, but it's hard to do. As the weather gets warmer I'm going to want to get outside more.
