126: Drake Stew

Hari left shortly after that to head back outside. I didn’t know what to say. I knew I didn’t want to stay in the capital, and I couldn’t even imagine what I’d do with a title.

This was all too much to think about right now, and I needed to just spend some time sitting and thinking. Right now, I had candy on the go, and the ones in the mould had already set.

While I was tapping them out, I had a thought.

“Milo, do you think a cold rune would help these set faster i...

It wasn’t long before Liane and Jen walked through the door. I noticed immediately they had been hunting, as they were both carrying several rabbits.

Hari followed them into the dome.

“They are still travelling forward. They slowed down again once they made some distance, but they have not stopped,” Jen informed him.

Hari just nodded before heading back outside again. Liane turned her attention to all the cooking happening at the fire, and a moment later appeared on th...

I shook my head. I was rapidly learning that if it was something Liane was excited about; it was likely something I should think twice about doing.

However, I was very curious how drake stew would taste, so this time I would ignore that little voice asking whether it was a good idea.

Once we stopped for the night, I had a lot of things to work out before we reached the capital, the main thing being what I was going to do in terms of food for Micca to sell. I was planning to make t...

Looking back at Dunhearth behind me, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much had changed in such a short amount of time. I had been worried about whether I’d make it back to see my friends—no, this time I was confident I would be back.

The path ahead led through fields and on a smooth cobbled road. I could already see a light dusting of snow on the ground; it wouldn’t be long now until we were in the middle of winter itself.

Micca pulled her horse up to ride alongside my o...

Looking around, I saw the crowd of people had grown significantly, and not wanting anyone else to try rushing the inn, I went back inside and closed the door. Lily was still present.

But now there was silence as all eyes were on me—well, except for Liane’s and Lily’s, who were both watching Liam. He straightened himself up, realising the eyes were on him.

“Well, I guess I should introduce myself properly then,” Liam began.

“I am Liam, Captain of the Royal Guard. ...

Interlude: Liam

Liam stood in the throne room, kneeling in front of the King as he received his orders.

“I have an important mission,” the King began. “You are to retrieve a boy. His name is Trevor, an orphan from Dunhearth.”

This all sounded too easy to Liam, and he did not understand why all the leaders of the guard were present, nor why nearly eighty men had been called to head out immediately.

“You are not to use force, and that needs to be made very clear to all your men. I n...

Larry approached the door, opening it just a little.

“Sorry, we’re closed this evening for a private event; you’ll need to come back tomorrow,” Larry said.

“Yes, I’m sorry to intrude. It’s one of your guests that I’d like to speak with. You wouldn’t happen to be hosting Trevor, the orphan from this very city, in there right now, would you?” I could hear Liam ask from the other side of the door.

His tone didn’t sound hostile; however, being called out di...

Entering the familiar inn, I noticed Larry had already emptied the place out, as the only people currently here were from my own group. The only exception was Janette, who was currently in conversation with Micca at one of the tables.

“I’m going to go into the kitchen,” I told the others. Crisplet rapidly left the brazier before following me into the small space that was once so familiar.

I caught sight of Geo, who was already working away at a dish I recognised straight awa...

It didn’t take us long to reach the stairs to the temple. It was a strange feeling returning here, and I still had mixed emotions regarding Elder Peter. What did he know of the situation the soldier class was getting into?

Entering the temple, I couldn’t help but admire the beauty: the giant white stone statue of the goddess sitting in the middle of the room, the kneeling benches placed around it, and, at its base, the offerings people had made to the goddess.

Even the huge wh...

I was sitting in front of the wagon next to Darren, who had been guiding it the whole way here, and as Dunhearth came into view, I couldn’t help but notice something was off. There were far too many guards on the gate compared to normal.

Closer inspection also showed they were far better equipped and dressed than I had remembered as well.

Hari’s voice was heard across the group. “Royal guards ahead.”

We had planned for this, and it boiled down to acting normally, kee...

I pulled out all the rolls when Crisplet alerted me they were done, storing them all away and mentally bringing up the buffs of each as I went.

The first was the healing roll, which had minor regeneration, as well as Earth Magic Potency and Fire Immunity, which were on all three.

The second, the stamina one, surprised me a little, and it was likely due to using the second ingredient. It provided +1 Dexterity, increased stamina regeneration, and reduced stamina drain, which I could...

I spent the next thirty minutes or so crushing the reed in the barrel. In the end, my arms nearly gave out, and my stamina was getting low, so I decided to stop.

It wasn’t much longer before Crisplet gave me the sign that the ribs were ready.

I excitedly pulled them out using a couple of stone spikes. They had successfully gained a sticky coating from the mixture of herbs and honey. The smell was amazing both sweet, smokey, with a hint of spices, and they looked perfect, I was s...

When everyone had finished eating their pie and were sitting around the hearth in the longhouse, Hari got our attention with a cough.

“This is as good a time as any to discuss our plans. It remains mostly the same: our goal is to drop past Dunhearth before making our way to the capital.”

Micca raised her hand, and it was waved off by Hari. “Just ask—no need to seek permission for it,” he said to her.

Heading outside, I was mindful that I would need to make the reed juice by myself. Both the regular juice and the alcoholic one had a cooking aspect to it, and getting help from Liane would ruin that.

Truthfully, I just wanted to discuss the buffs with her and the royal guard situation without the others. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust them, but it always felt easier talking to her, and I knew I would get an honest answer.

I let Crisplet know where I was going before leaving th...

Interlude Lily

Lily was not happy about the whole situation — she nearly lost her human.

She was prepared to kill everyone in that city if he had died, but the shadow lady he trusted had helped him and assured her he’d be okay now.

Still, he was far too fragile. There had to be a solution. Crisplet also assured her that he could take care of any issues that arose, but she was not convinced; he had been panicked just as much as her when her human collapsed.

112: Pie and Chilli

The recipe was fairly simple. I would first crush the sugar-reed into juice; then it was a matter of simply adding yeast and water — this would create a wash.

The most difficult part was separating the wash from the yeast product that would settle at the bottom. Once it was added to a vessel that either Crisplet or Milo would be able to make, it was heated just enough that the alcohol would move over.

Apparently, the part most people had difficulty with was keeping a consistent ...

The next two days passed with slow progress. I could move a little, but I didn’t have full control of my movement. The pain felt like it had not gotten better at all; I was so worried that last night I checked with Milo twice to make sure.

Today I was in the back of the wagon, seated on the wooden bench, trying to move my legs properly while reading through Char’s book on runes. I didn’t have enough control in my hands and arms to do any practice yet — I made that mistake yester...

As I lay on the ground, my eyes closed, I reached out towards the fireplace, trying to feel anything there. The lack of anything had me worried, but as I concentrated I felt something. It was difficult to describe; unlike the wind, which seemed to have two states—one which was still, and then when it was turbulent, rushing in a direction while I was moving.

The fire was different. It wasn’t hot like I expected; there was no temperature at all, but it felt like there were mini explos...

The first thing I felt was pain. I couldn’t move, but my body was in agony. It felt like everywhere was burning from the inside.

At the same time, I couldn’t move, this felt eerily familiar to what I had experienced before — but with far more pain.

As I opened my eyes, on my back staring up at the roof, I was clearly not in the kitchen anymore, and I could barely focus on anything as my eyes watered from the pain I was in, I was sure I was on a bed of some kind right now. View Post

Interlude: Liane (Read 108 first btw)

Liane had been stalking the idiot who had tried to muscle Trev. He didn’t know she saw it, but she saw everything, and no one would be making a fool of her team like that.

She didn’t really have faith in the guild’s ability to punish him, and the fact he was sitting here in the guild hall drinking with his party right now did not bode well in their favour.

There was a temptation to deal with it herself—she could easily. She had already worked out what inn he was staying at...

I took up a position next to George and tried to remember the steps, but I failed horribly.

“Trevor!”

A voice called out from a distance away.

“Trevor, wake up,” it called again. As I groggily raised my head, I didn’t see anyone in the room—just Crisplet in the brazier watching the door, but no Lily anymore.

Getting out of bed, I was still fully clothed, so I stumbled my way to the door to see Liane peeking her head around the side.

With a giant smile, she said, “Oh, good—I was worried Lily would be there and get mad.”

Heading into the kitchen, I took stock of the carcasses I had and how I was best going to butcher them in order to complete eleven more today.

The first thing I did was pull out one of the bark vipers. It would be good practice for the two miremaw’s that I had. I would also do the three blood owls and two wind hawks; they were fairly simple to prepare.

That cleared up most of the ten with fairly easy-to-butcher carcasses; however, the last three were more concerning. I had two m...

I waited in the dining room, pulling out my books on runes and continuing to study the cold rune I had been working on. It was then I was reminded that I should really work on the Sugar Reed juice I had been meaning to make.

With the time-freeze nature of the pantry, I couldn’t store it there—well, I could; it just wouldn’t gain anything.

As I walked through the market, I was in awe of everything around me. There were so many stores with amazing fruits and vegetables. It was a buzz of activity, and the air was heavy with the smell of roast meats and smoke from all the food vendors.

It was really difficult to pick where I wanted to go first, but food won out.

I approached the closest stall to me and saw what looked to be a variety of roast meats on sticks, including several that looked to be sausage or something wra...
