2022-06-17 16:37:12 +0000 UTC View PostThis week, a soul/r&b style lesson using mostly double stops. I love this style of playing; it's super versatile and can be used to create interesting solos, fills or rhythm parts.
In my piece there's a selection of my favourite licks and ideas: 3rds, 4ths, 6ths, Hendrix-style licks...

After the technical difficulties of last week's Wilko Johnson lesson, I decided to go for something simple, raw and satisfying for today's video: the track Radar by the great Link Wray.
Here's the link:
Tab is below as usual. The backing is coming up in the next post.
Hope you enjoy it!

Hello all. This week, an exploration of the guitar style of British guitar legend Wilko Johnson. He has unique approach to the instrument and this video is my attempt to get to the bottom of what he's doing. Here's the link -
And below I've tabbed out 5 classic Dr Feelgood riffs. I've tried to make the tab clear and readable, so I've omitted some of the scratches and muted notes...
2022-06-03 15:23:50 +0000 UTC View PostThis week I wanted to look at a proper classic: Love in Vain as played by the Rolling Stones. It contains some beautiful acoustic work from Keith Richards, and I believe he also played the slide guitar part. Here's a link to the video:
Tabs can be found below. I've written out 3 choruses of the acoustic part note-for-note from the record. After that it really just repeats with a few m...

This week's video is all about the diminished 7th arpeggio. It completes my series of lessons looking at the most common four note arpeggios. (Do check out the other videos if you've not already seen them.) This is a great and versatile sound that has more uses than you might imagine. There's a bit of theory, some exercises and plenty of licks. Here's a link to the video:

2022-05-20 16:01:52 +0000 UTC View PostI've spent this week reading the excellent new John McGeoch biography, so how could I not look at at song featuring the great man's work for today's video. I've decided to go for a lesser-known track, by The Armoury Show, the band McGeoch joined after Siouxsie and the Banshees. Castles in Spain has a proper, bombastic 80s production but features some typically stellar guitar work from McGeoch. Here's a link to the video:

2022-04-29 16:19:48 +0000 UTC View PostHello everyone. I wanted to do a song lesson this week, and plucked this one from my long list of potential tracks to look at. It's a fabulous track, with plenty of interesting things happening guitar-wise: an open-tuning, great use of harmonics, and a brief, perfectly-formed solo. Here's the link -
Everything is tabbed out below. There are 2 separate PDFs: one for the rhythm an...
2022-04-29 16:16:44 +0000 UTC View PostHello all! A few people requested that I write out in full the solo that I played at the start of last week's video. So I've done just that. Find the tab attached below (I'll also add it to the main post for this lesson).
I'll leave you to figure out what's going on here. In the last 4 bars of each chorus I'm playing some slight variations on the licks I discussed in the video. The rest of the time I'm thinking chord tones, or just good old A minor pentatonic.
This week's vi...

2022-04-22 16:28:46 +0000 UTC View PostHello all. This week, some blues. For me, one of the most important parts of blues soloing is being able to outline the chord changes, particularly during the last four bars of the 12 bar cycle. In this video I show you how I approach doing this. There's a bit of theory, a discussion of phrasing and note choice, and plenty of tasty licks. Here's the link:

As I joke in the video, this isn't on the surface of it the most thrilling subject for a lesson. But if you bear with me, I hope you find it to be an interesting and useful sound to get under your fingers. There's...

2022-04-01 17:24:17 +0000 UTC View PostHello all,
Following on from last week’s perhaps slightly obscure song choice, this week I thought I’d head in the opposite direction and look at an all-time guitar classic: Apache by The Shadows.
I’ve gone all out with this one: it’s a two part, in-depth look at the track covering both rhythm and lead parts, theory, technique and gear. I thought I already knew this one pretty well, but I made lots of new discoveries whilst putting these videos together.
Part one whi...

2022-03-25 18:22:38 +0000 UTC View PostHere's the backing. There's a 1 bar count in. (Don't be put off by the fact that the bass comes in part way through the riff, which is what seems to happen on the original recording. The guitar comes in right on the 1.) The structure is the same as the original single version of the track. Have fun playing along!

2022-03-11 18:08:32 +0000 UTC View PostHere's the piece Lapis Lazuli that I discuss in the video, without the main guitar tracks, for anyone who fancies playing along. There main theme is pretty straight-forward D minor stuff played in the 5th position. For the solo you might like to try improvising something using the D minor/ D dorian/ D minor pentatonic scale. Hope you enjoy.
2022-03-04 18:35:35 +0000 UTC View PostI've made a new record. 2022-03-04 18:32:35 +0000 UTC View PostHere's the backing. I've added a 4 beat count at the start. One of the slightly tricky things here is getting the gaps right between the phrases. Have fun with it!
2022-02-25 17:59:21 +0000 UTC View PostThis week I'm looking at a fantastic instrumental take on the country classic Ghost Riders in the Sky. You can use it to practice all the inversions on the all the different string sets, as I do in the video. But if this stuff is new to you, you might want to start more simply, and work on each group of 3 I IV V shapes separately, just repeating the same shapes until they become automatic. Hope you have fun with it!
