Update from a hike...

I took my first vacation in a long while, completely in glorious isolation for 5 days. Here's an update from the trip.

RPG update, on a Friday!

So no video update today, but this one instead. I've only been working on the huge tabletop RPG project, so I thought it'd be cool to show you how far I've come thus far. 

So here's all the complete, finished pieces. There's going to be over a 100 more pieces, and most of them are started, but are in various states of completion, from rough thumbnail to ready to scan.

Things got a little out of hand with #inktober starting and everything, so I forgot the update.

Inktober/October plans...

So everything is late as per usual, but here's the plan for #inktober, and for the Daily Ink Monsters all through October. You guys get a little preview a few hours before the rest. 

For #inktober I'll be making 31 meditative landscape ink images. I thought I'd go back to basic. Each of them will be accompanied by a few lines of text.

The Rape of Persephone...

Friday update #1

In order to keep you guys up to date, I'm committing to doing weekly videos from the studio(now, my cellar), going over some of last week's work. This weeks was very impromptu, but hope you like the format!

So just a quick post... The second video I've been working on, again with Dave Hall, but this time directed by me and fully animated... is out! 

I won't post much now, because it's been a week of sleepless nights getting it done... But I'll be posting a bit behind the scenes art soon, and also uploading a shit ton of work to the pre-release gallery for 10$ patrons some time next week.

A tease and some news...

First of all a little tease... I can't say that band, or what, or anything, but I can say that you will see more of this image on the 28th. It's one of the projects I've been teasing for a while. Keen eyes might find the above image on the social media pages of... whoever it is...

Bastard Sons of Buddha and more...

Quick update on everything. Working on a secret album cover for a tiny new band/project, where I'll most likely won't even be credited. So this is a secret inside glimpse just for you. It's fun!

Also, went out drawing a live concert for the first time in ages. Bastard Sons of Buddha is a legendary Bergen band, who started in 1988 and still have yet to release their first album. It's not metal, but when I first heard them in the early nineties it was bands like them and my all time favor...

#coronart 57: Instinct

Did you think my #coronart effort was dead? Oh no, just sleeping. And I guess it kinds of relates to the keyword for this piece. 

I did this piece at the tail end of May. That's over three weeks ago. First, my instincts told me I needed to take a break. And that may have been true, but they also told me that I'd manage to do #coronart just a few times a week. Rationally, experience should have told me that this would probably be more difficult than it seemed.

Portrait Artist of the Week....

So I did it! I used the #mypaotw hashtag and entered my portrait of Noel Fielding into the Portrait Artist of the Week contest.
I'm definitely not a portrait artist, and I knew that going in. I've done a few portrait sketches,  some ink portrait commissions, and some caricatures, but never anything approaching a fully painted portrait. And let me tell you, it's a completely different beast.
I wouldn't say I particularly succeeded, nor did I fail, but more important than the final...

Cthulhu and more...

A bunch of small stuff.

I did the Dark Art Society monthly challenge again, painted another Cthulhu, and came in... second place! My sixth consecutive second place! 😂
(Very happy with it,  as I was real late starting and sure this Cthulhu would rank much lower).

Also learned about SkyTVs "Portait Artist of the Week", a weekly portrait contest. My wife and me have been hooked on Portrait Artist of the Year, which we watch on YouTube,  and I've often wished it was...

Nyarlathotep...

I've been teasing this a long time, but finally it's getting somewhere. It's still unreleased and SECRET so SHHHH!!! Don't tell anyone. 

Many years ago I did a 24 hour comic book night, where I illustrated H.P. Lovecraft's prose-poem Memory, which blossomed into illustrated versions of 4 prose poems, which led to performances and readings with live music, which ended up with Costin Chioreanu taking on the music duties for the whole project.

Artist mentorship.

Sorry for the sudden lack of updates. The corona-lockdown was over for me last week, with kids back in school/kindergarten, so I decided to take a little break. The break was... harder that initially thought. But I'm back on track. So here's an announcement for you patrons, that I'll announce to the world later tonight. 

One of the reasons I needed a break from the #coronart, was to do all the other things I have been working on or wanting to do for a long time. On top of the list ...

As above, so below. For some people the whole focus on darkness in art seems strange, like an unhealthy obsession. But it's not about obsessing over darkness.
Whether it's my natural inclination or my bipolar diagnosis, I'm blessed to experience great light, yet spend most of my days in darkness. Creating dark art is not about glorifying the dark, or claiming the dark is equal to the light. But by delving deep into the dark, my art allows me to bring back a little light and make things a ...

#coronart day 53: Borrow

As my renown as an artist grows, ever so slowly, it's tempting for an ego like mine to listen to the praise and believe my own hype. One of my major dysfunctions is that I believed myself a master at age 4, and every day since I have been learning how little I truly know. And obvious as it may seem, I guess the shocking and humbling revelation for me is that my proper place is to accept that I'm always just a student, standing on the shoulders of the masters from which I borrow.

So moving on, what is my main thing? Is it the ink? Is it the brush? Is it the concert art? Is it dark art? Is it variety? Is it self expression? Is it free art?
Thinking long and hard about it, all I do is try to make something beautiful for me. And why do I do it? Because it gives me meaning. Creating meaning through beauty. That's my main.

#coronart day 49: Beyond

Despite all the things we gain with age, it's a sad thing to loose the unfiltered connection with our fantasy. By nature I'm a dreamer, and by vocation I have to train to keep my ability to fantasize in vigour. And I reckon I'm pretty good at it.

But it brings a bittersweet tear to my eye to watch my kids engulfed in their play, and know that I will never again see as clearly the world beyond.
