New Tea With Alice Podcast: Jarrod McKenna

Hallo!

Am now in the final days of MICF. It has been an exhausting run, with no days off MYTHOS except for the days I've been supporting Norah Jones. On the bright side, this means the show came together relatively quickly and I'm pretty happy with it now.

Come see it in the world!

This week's podcast with Tea-Friend Jarrod McKenna was a fun one, I enjoy our conversations, and particularly enjoy how Jarrod likes to cite his sources both secular and biblical. ...

Matrix Thinking and a nice surprise

Hallo!

Whether it was talking about the show to you here yesterday, or just the next natural step in the process of chewing things together in my hindbrain, but I woke up at about 2am with whirring cogs and threads aligning in my show like a procedural forensic drama.

Now I wish I could grab everyone who has come so far and excitedly tell them that all of the pieces are actually there for a reason (and tell them the reason) rather than just feeling in my gut that they *should* be...

Melbourne Comedy Festival Week 1

It's been a rollercoaster of a first week at MICF with my new show, MYTHOS. Previously, I've always had a Pre-Melbourne season of previews to knock a show into shape, but this time, Melbourne was a standing start for me. I had done two half-hour previews in London to try some of the jokes, but structurally, it's been very much working the show out on the fly.

This is always a mixed feeling, because of course you want every audience to enjoy themselves as much as possible, but at t...

Some thoughts about this John Cleese moment

‪When I started out in comedy, there wasn’t much room for me or my style. Was turned away from a lot of things because I didn’t look like what they wanted. I repeatedly used to tell myself “be better”, “be undeniable”.

I refused to see it as being about my qualities (even though it probably was) and made it a spur to work on the work’s quality. That was me starting out. Tonight I’m doing the MICF opening night gala. Whether it’s my improvement or the industr...

New Tea With Alice Podcast: Justin Hamilton

This was the second time I'd sat down with Justin Hamilton to chat, and the first time I brought my microphones and we ended up just catching up as normal humans.

The second time, I managed to record our chat over peppermint tea and it ended up being about relevance, loneliness, revitalising creativity, ambiguity, experimental audio states, cinematic standup and whether and how to say something interesting when you're not sure anyone wants to listen to you.

This week’s Tea With Alice to come out in a few days

Halfway home to Sydney, just before tipping over into the calm waters of zombified acceptance, at that point where you feel like your whole body is a jumper you urgently need to shuck.

Abu Dhabi airport is too small to walk around for two hours without feeling very trapped, but I always feel guilty if I sit down in the space between two long stretches of sitting down, so now I have just been looking at all of the many varieties of dates and much falcon paraphernalia.

More Answers

Today I took a day completely off work because after filming the double of ETHOS on Sunday, I woke up to a six hour meeting on Monday followed by MCing Old Rope Monday night. On the bus home, a couple of people came up to chat with me, and I realised I was bordering on total burnout.

So, today off. Tomorrow filming all my answers to your questions. But as a form of apology, I did engage in a few nice twitter chats today, which I think are worth excerpting the interesting bits of b...

Two Free Tickets to Ethos 5pm Sunday in London for Patreon Subscribers

UPDATE:

The winner has been drawn by assigning numbers in order and then running a random number generator and is Thomas Wise! Message me for details.

But I had an idea and called management. It is possible or even probable that the 5pm show will only have 1 camera, to the second show’s 2 or 3. This means if I ask nicely (like I just did) there might be space to shove in a few more seats which would possibly make room for more London based “competition entran...

6 Book Recommendations For Rainy Days

I consistently get asked by you lovely Patreon types, and in normal life what my favourite book is, and I find it impossible to answer that question.

I think it's because books are in my head, a sort of form of transport.

When someone asks what my favourite book is, it feels like I'm trying to answer the question, 'how do you like to travel from one place to another?', because the answer to that will always depend on where you want to go, what kind of day it is, how fi...

Week of Thoughts: Skin

Hallo, I've been doing a bit of non-comedy writing in my spare time, and here is some of it for you lovely subscribers.

Let me know if it's the kind of thing you'd want more of. If you prefer the comedy style writing, I'm also hoping to do a bit more of that this year - ideally something new every week if inspiration or discipline strikes, and/or maybe the offcuts from Bugle shows. I tend to over-write for the bugle, as we end up getting to only about 2/3 of the stories we intend ...

Poetry vs Comedy

I’m doing a gig in Brighton tonight where it’s poets vs comedians. I’m on the comedian team for tonight, which is always a bit of an odd feeling, because I always thought when I was a kid that I’d end up a poet.

Anyway, there are themed rounds, where we have to have stand-up bits on certain topics (the poets have to have poems for the rounds, obvs) and I sat down to write some jokes about science and instead wrote an extremely silly little poem about the division of s...
