Guess which one of these cool squares I just visited this morning?
There’s something brutal about waking up at 6am while in Edinburgh while you’re in Edinburgh Festival timezone. Not that I’ve been socialising particularly much, but even so, it’s been 2am bedtimes, so waking up early feels like someone’s done something very mean.
Today I’ll be doing The Bugle Live, though, so it’s probably good to get a jump start on the joke writing for that.
Monday was the (pr...

What, maybe you're getting behind on your entirely self imposed publication schedule.
The last three days have been a very busy time, doing spots, trying to remember the three separate solo shows that comprise The Trilogy for tomorrow, and of course, trying to do credit to ETHOS.
It's turned a little rainy and that has seemed to bring more people in to the show, though maybe they are just sheltering from the rain. The upside of having a publicity team is that I don't have to ...

Yesterday (Tuesday) was a glorious show and a lot of fun. A bunch of fans of Stuart Goldsmith’s inside comedy podcast came along to the show and then we went into a bus that is also a vintage cinema and did an interview about comedy that made me feel a bit overexposed.
I’m no good at talking much after shows, so this was a challenge, but Stuart is a very good interviewer and his audience were all lovely and the questions were interesting, even if not all my answers were on point.

Today (monday) was very relaxing. I had scheduled no extra promo spots, so I had only the kids show at 3pm and ETHOS at 7.55. I had brunch, I had a nap(!), I ate a lot of things. I chatted to my dad on the phone who has just finished a long walk in the lake district. It paid off in spades, and tonight was the most lovely show I've had of the run so far.
A lot of credit for that goes to the audience who were collectively full, and laughed a lot, which is always nice for a comedy show.&nbs...

Been a busy last few days. Friday’s ETHOS was very loose and messy but a lot of fun and a delightful audience. Tonight was much slicker on my end but with a more “hm, theatre, mmmm” audience. Not sure if that’s a Saturday night thing or if I was just subdued after a double-kids show.

Today (yesterday aka Saturday) was one of those days where I ended up literally running between gigs (particularly the last two). I should have put a podcast up, but although I’ve record...

Day three of Edinburgh (second show, final preview, holy crap my numbering system is getting out of control) was lovely.
I woke up and did a little bit of exercise - some body weight and core stuff. You have no idea how virtuous getting any kind of healthful activity feels in Edinburgh. Other than walking up thousands of stairs every day, it's just not really part of the framework of most days. Making time to do even a couple of flaccid crunches made me feel disproportionately smug.

So I don’t know where today went, except that it was a lot of putting bits and pieces together for the show tonight and thinking about the show tonight and buying a table for the show tonight and finding a tea place to do my pre-show tea drinking.
There was some sort of industry party that I didn’t go to in favour of putting the bits and pieces together and watching Laura Davis work on her Ghost for Ghost Machine. It is a marvel of engineering and seamsmanship (not a word, but should...

Here we are again!
Today was Tech run for ETHOS, finding out my room for the show this year is downstairs in this gorgeous monster of a building, and meeting the flyering team.
Tech run is where you go into a room to meet the people who will do lights and sound for your show; who will be very bored watching it every night, and patch you up if any disasters happen.
Tech for ETHOS is very simple from the perspective of the tech guys, unless my rig fails in which case it wil...

Democracy is a lovely idea - the egalitarian principle that everyone should have a vote, worth the same amount as the next person, regardless of their station, wealth or influence, is simple, was revolutionary and has shaped our ideas of how the world should work.
Of course, that’s not quite how democracy actually works for the most part. We vote in increments, electing local representatives to make decisions on our behalf. Those decisions get made, balancing out what they think we’d ...

I just did a set on Tonightly with Tom Ballard, which was a lot of fun. The show is recorded ‘as live’, which means I now get to wait on jetlagged tenterhooks for an hour or so until it airs and then I get one or three of three things on social media.
1) nobody says anything on social media.
This is okay, though sinking without a trace after doing something on television is a mixed blessing; or
2) I get lots of positive feedback, and only a little bit of negative feedback, ...

This argument is back. How can it be so boring? How can the gut-punch horror of a young woman dead in the grass of a familiar park have slid so quickly into familiar news-cycle hot-take territory?
We get told to be careful a lot. We tell each other. We tell our friends. I hear it from my brother, my father, myself. It's a nice thing to hear. It means, I want you to be safe and happy. Text me when you get home safe.
But when a young woman is brutally raped and murdered just gettin...

An exciting new TeaCast this week, with Neurologist and Neuroscientist Ash Ranpura, who is also an author and my co-presenter for an upcoming Audible documentary as well as being an all round delightful person to have a cuppa with. We sat in a cafe in central London and talked about a wide range of things beginning with exercise, good habits and meditation and going on to wild and untamed shores. I loved this chat.
I also tell you my bug adventure.

Reuploading the last Tea With Alice podcast because it was only coming out of one speaker. If yours sounds weird, just delete and reupload. All mea culpa. I'd blame the jetlag, but tbh it's probably just that I'm bad at sound editing.

Hey Patreonites,
The Perth run has come to an end, and it’s been such a pleasure to see some of you taking advantage of the 2 for 1 offer. I’ve loved getting to meet you, and I’m glad I got to sort out tickets.
Perth tech was a bit of a drama, but after the opening night, I feel like I have a better handle on the show, to take it to the U.K. This is such a hard show to do properly, because it deals with failure, and so it has to skate close to failure, while still working as a sh...
