Why I'm Raising Money for Febfast

Why am I putting some of my Social Media Credit on the line to get money for Febfast at the time of year when I'm also trying to get people along to my show in Adelaide?  In general as a cap-in-hand artist, it can often feel like you don't have generosity to waste. View Post

New Teacast up with Brydie Lee Kennedy

Talking about the power of ugliness, some nostalgic dissection of cliques and  problems with the word 'Progressive'.

Compliments and Buttholes (actual, not metaphorical)

Well, it's been a charmed run of non-troll feedback, with lots of people who liked The Resistance on iview and the television.

Having spent a few weeks last year helping out with social media for a television program, (the toxicity of which I discussed here in my post Ankle Deep in Vitriol ).

 I had felt quite overwhelmed by t...

Televisioning - The Void

So I've had my first TV special. (There's an arrogance for you, making the assumption that I'll get more work from here, and that the creative career is a linear progression).

I'm feeling very glamorous in my birthday-present-bathrobe, and I'm replying to lots of (so far) very nice messages, so I'm half waiting for the other shoe to drop, but mainly grinning like a fool.

So far all the comments I've got have been very positive, which is lovely. I imagine that can't last but we'll...

Teacast with Stuart Goldsmith

I sat down in Stuart's flat in London to talk about the process of talking to people about process, his encounter with sudden rage and the mutability of facts. We also talked about the power of saying 'I don't know' as a tool for making conversations more representative.

I really enjoyed the chewing over we had about affirmative action, which I'm not sure about, and the question of whether we're being left behind by an increasingly young world.

The pod (and all the others) ar...

Making Jokes

So yesterday, slightly underslept, I embarked on a little pun-run on my twitter. It's a nice feeling, to make a joke - it feels like a little construction project. Some people liked it, some people didn't, which is fair enough. Puns are silly, and can be annoying. Which is part of the joy of them, if you're in the mood for them. They're deconstructive of our general agreement that words mean the things we usually use them for. If you're not in the mood for that, it can come across as a quite ag...

Secret Project

Friends! I have a favour to ask for a secret project. The best/worst/most insane comment you’ve seen online? Screencaps please! If you’re in a friendly mood, when you send the awful screencap, say something nice about anything or anyone. Just so I don’t get buried in grime and depressed by the world.

Jason Stone

Alice sits over tea in YumChaa talks to Jason Stone of The Guardian and DavidReviews.com about

- being the Cheryl Cole of media journalism;

- the power of words;

- the difference between fighting for equality and celebrating difference, if there is one;

- gender roles and science;

- how far we should be limiting freedom of speech;

- the nature of screens leading to a two dimensionalising of discourse.

Plus assorted banter and tea.

New Teacast up with Kirsty Newton

Find it here: http://apple.co/1RFWx1E

This was an interesting conversation. We began by talking about insomnia and music, and ended by talking about death and art - it's odd to find myself sometimes saying things that are... not quite cliche, but close to it.

Having visceral personal realisations of things that are commonplace, like the way grief can be incohate and overpowering, like a sucking wound somewhere yo...

Free Preview Tomorrow: Empire

Tomorrow, if you are in London or know people in London who might like my gear. 8pm, if you'd be so kind as to come. I will bring snacks, you bring your laughter or judgmental silence - both will be equally useful.

Also, it's close enough to my birthday that I'm willing to leverage your sense of birthday generosity. The greatest gift is coming to watch me fail my way towards funny.

Ed Byrne Teacast up!

New Teacast is up , with the brilliant Ed Byrne  on how to deal with (or not deal with) trolls, why he doesn't like tea, how free speech is overhyped and the dolphins in his radiator.

I'd just had a cup of breakfast tea, black, and Ed went tea-free for reasons I'll let him explain.

My Failures: Part 1

The Times I Failed

If it can't be helped, at least maybe it can help.

We all wake up sometimes haunted by shame and regret. Those emotions are either cripplingly useless or important ways of protecting us from making the same mistakes again. They can be a little of both those things, or a pendulum between the two states.

I've made it a pet project recently to encourage people to fail. Particularly young women on the way up the ladder in the way that I am on my way up (p...

New TeaCast Up! With Amy Howerska

Talking about family, holding grudges & the difficult question of telling the truth in jokes.

http://apple.co/1RFWx1E

This was an interesting and difficult podcast for me. I enjoy the conversation I had with Amy, but talking about mothers and illness and the show Savage always feels quite loaded to me, and I don't think I was hugely articulate. I was tempted to edit this podcast heavily.

What's happened to the Left Wing? Moral Reasoning, Social Justice Warriors, whose job is it to educate you, who's on the wrong side of history, who has to fight and when. A good chat with some traditional (turns out to be Russian) dancing in the background

Or rather, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. Part of my work writing jokes for The Project on Channel 10 involves replying to messages on their official page. It's a nice little insight into a side of Australia that I'm not usually connected with. But apart from the comments praising or censuring panellists for things they have or have not said, a...

I’m still not sure whether that’s a good thing in absolute. I have a feelin...

Screw Euphemisms. Saying what you mean might be less offensive.

TW for strong language, by definition: I'm discussing loaded language in this post, and will go with quotation marks rather than censor asterisks because I want to consider the impact of the words I'm examining.

If you worry that you might have a problem with that stylistic choice, click away now (or if you really want to read, cut-and-paste into microsoft word, and do a pre-emptive find-and-replace on words you might feel to be deeply unsettling)

Costumes and Bodies on Stage

So, I've been looking at fabric and dress-designs recently, signing up to pinterest and looking at costumes and clothes, which are not my normal area of expertise. I do like good design, and I tend to think that I dress well enough (even though usually in the same thing every day), but it's not one of my core preoccupations.

Who knew there were so many different kinds of fabric?

I'm in the middle of the very beginning of planning the writing and content of my new solo show ...
