Re-entry and All Levels Salon

So one of the things that I’ve been thinking about, is that next week I will be doing a discussion on cancel culture on the SBS (Australia’s publicly funded foreign language and culture broadcaster). They have a program called insight, in which they run discussions about things, aiming to be nuanced and in-depth, I guess much in the way that I do in my Tea With Alice and the salons. Though of necessity, given that it’s on television, less of a… safe space for incoherence?

Doorways

This doorway into nowhere at the cliffs of diamond bay is one of my favourite places in the world. I used to go there and stare out to sea or read a book. Once you go through it, all you can see is ocean and the beautiful honey coloured sandstone cliffs. It’s like sitting on the edge of the world. It’s like a doorway in a story, that takes you out of this place and into another.

The door leads out onto quite a wide ledge, and to the right there’s a rope and a narrower ledge, some...

Birthday Weekend and Tea With Alice Salon 46

It was my birthday on Friday, and also the last weekend of my twin brother being in town with his family, so it’s been a very lovely, mildly chaotic couple of days. I’m definitely just a woman now, if you know what I mean? I’m not a young woman, I’m not an old woman. Just some lady doing stuff.

I feel pretty good about it, actually. As I’ve said before, I’m not afraid of ageing, I have cheekbones and a personality, I’ll be fine.

It’s hard to let go of t...

Hallo, I can’t remember whether tomorrow morning was meant to be an all levels salon, so I will make it so! All welcome.

New Year

My goodness I love this lighthouse. It’s so good at catching light and being beautiful. If you’re ever in Sydney, and get a chance to go to Vaucluse, it’s good lighthouse territory. There are three lighthouses (one is actually a signal station, but it’s lighthouse-esque) within walking distance of this park, and I think that’s a pretty good ratio.

Event-dates mean nothing, unless we want them to, and I’m trying to be more open and welcoming to tradition and custom, so what ...

Did I mention I’m big (my free documentary is number seven on audible) in India?

In the doldrums of the year I tend to make lists and think about what I’m proud of in the last year, and what I’m ashamed of or want to do better with. I also make lists of what I want to do in the next year. It’s hard to make plans right now though. What do you do in these dog days between Christmas and my birthday? Or Christmas and new year if your birthday isn’t on the 7t...

Christmas Thoughts

  • Christmas was never a huge thing in my family for obvious reasons, but I’m sad for the people missing out on their traditions this year. My brother’s wife LOVES Christmas, to the point of wearing flashing Christmas tree earrings and singing carols to her children all year round and I can see how it would be a vector for immense joy. And any excuse to sing together makes me happy.
  • Carols are more or less the only remaining functional folk music. In the most classi...

Zoom Gig Tonight

Hallo, my friend Kirsty Webeck does lovely online gigs that somehow avoid the zoom curse of awkward clunkiness, and last night asked me to join her lineup show - just doing a short spot first up in the running order, but it will be a fun way to avoid omicron. Show starts 8.30pm Sydney time. I’ll aim to do new material as tried out at my solo show the other night. Tickets available here:

This is a photo I took of the three sisters in January of this year, and I feel like that was yesterday and also forever ago. I feel like time is a bit out of joint for a lot of us, these days (can we even call them these days any more?).

I resent it being Xmas already - it feels like a trick. Hence the joke I did on last week’s Bugle/Gargle (I try not to repeat too much material, but I’m cutting myself a little slack on the writing front for obvious reasons), about how t...

NFT 6: The Live Show

I did a live show on Thursday, six weeks after giving birth. It was probably a silly idea but it was definitely an interesting artistic experiment, and I found it so lovely and my insides didn’t fall out, so I count it as a win.

See you all at midday my (Sydney) time! (Whatever that is in your time)

I’ll answer questions and you can tell me what’s appropriate material for my show on Thursday as I don’t trust my sense of what’s funny at the moment.

La Niña and this week’s Salon

It’s very wet and rainy here in Sydney over the last few weeks, which is unusual but also means we’re unlikely to have bushfires, so despite the fact that I’m showing Andy Zaltzman the beautiful sights of sunny Sydney under near constant grim grey skies, I can’t bring myself to be annoyed that my birthday (7th Jan) won’t smell like smoke, as it so regularly does.

Anyway, Salon 42 is open to all levels and will be 8pm Tuesday US east coast time. I’ll send through the passcod...

I’m back! (ish), and Salon 41 details.

Hallo lovely Patreonites.

Andy Zaltzman (of The Bugle) is in town for The Cricket (his one true love), and so he came over to record a podcast with me on Friday. It was very strange and nice. I also did ABC radio show Thank God It’s Friday that day (also with Andy). It was absolutely exhausting, particularly as the ABC radio show is recorded standing up in the studio and it turns out standing up for an hour is quite hard for me right at the moment. In sum, it was a delightful day, if ...

#NFT 5 - Reading The Room

I’m a month in to this whole new business, and I think probably next week I’ll bring back the Salons. Likely a bit of a Q&A for the first one back so feel free to submit your questions via DM on this app/website and I’ll try to answer them.

This was last night’s #NFT on … look, to be honest I titled it reading the room, but I have totally forgotten what I said, and I fell asleep before I hit post on this post, so take it with a grain of salt, or a spoonful of s...

New Tea With Alice: Justine Rogers

Dr Justine Rogers is a legal academic, an old friend and creative colleague and an ex member of my old girl-group, Aggressively Helpful. I love her dearly, and she's excellent at articulating and unpacking the nuances of complex interpersonal interactions in a way that I constantly find impressive and enjoyable. We talk about family dynamics, family therapy, The Reformation and I talk about my baby for the first time on the podcast.

Night Feed Thoughts: NFT #1, Professional Boundaries

This is by way of a bit of agony aunt action.

A friend in comedy dealing with the breakdown of a professional workflow where the person she was working with (a producer) had been rude and mean to her asked me how to deal with it, and when I said “they’re being unprofessional”, she was shocked that I had framed it as an issue of their professional relationship, rather than as it pertained to their friendship (“that’s mean”). I recorded these thoughts.

Update! Baby!

Hello lovely Patreonites! Patreon-knights, Patreon night people and day people, I have a baby! I have had this baby for about a week, and only now am I starting to feel like I can be trusted with the written word. (I am still on ‘maternity leave’. Though why I feel compelled to put it in quote marks when that’s exactly what I am, is weird and says something about legitimacy that I’m sure I’ll be capable of articulating some other time.)

Thanks for all of your lovely...

Update slash non update and New Tea With Alice with Damian Smith

Pre-baby limbo stretches on, and I'm regretting putting all my work aside, because it turns out (at least from what this one midwife lady said) 4 out of 5 first babies come late, and to me that means actually, this isn't a late baby, you just told me the wrong date. Anyway, being this pregnant suddenly illuminates the Chivalric tradition to me, because yes please, carry my not very heavy bag and open that door, I'm extremely unwieldy right now, all my joints are sliding around, I have no core...

Anniversary

Today is the anniversary of mum’s death. It’s also the week my baby is due.* Often I find I can’t sleep much in the first two weeks of October, and it takes a little while to Detective out why, and remember the date.

That’s an interesting feature of being human isn’t it? That your body should know something your brain hasn’t remembered yet. I guess that’s all reflex and instinct are, except in this instance it’s tied to calendar date - which is a made up thin...

Good Comedy

Okay, the new Chappelle special is out and causing controversy, so it’s probably time to dust off my “good comedy” vs “good” comedy, knee-jerk reaction. I’ve not yet watched the show, but I’m already seeing the arguments and so I’ll do the gritty reboot about how people conflate moral good with artistic effectiveness in order to question or buffer the validity of a piece of work. This is a bit upstream of whatever particular joke is causing the Merry-go-round of mut...

Time warps, subterranean processes and Tea With Alice Salon 40

The clocks have changed, and the U.K. clocks will change at the end of this month! This is very exciting for U.K. connections, because it means the time zone difference is much more manageable (for me).

Though of course everyone who works across timezones has different ways of doing the mental maths, for me figuring out where the UK is at compared with sydney has been ‘add three and change the AM/PM’. But NOW it’s ‘add two’ and at the end of the month it will be ‘add one’...

Sleep, allegedly murdered by Macbeth.

I’ve been extremely lucky with sleep over the last few months, not that I’m boasting about it, but this week seems to have tipped into a frenzy of late night reading, as I am not sure when that particular combination of joy and mild wilful self-harm will return to my life after the baby has moved from … indoors to … outdoors.*

*Is this a disgusting way to describe it?

ANYWAY!

There’s something interesting about staying up late doing a thing that will de...

Will be at 10pm Tuesday U.K. time this week! I realise that’s fairly late for the U.K. people, but it translates to 7am wednesday my time! Soon the clocks will change and we’ll all be more manageable time-zone-wise.

Also soon I’ll be out of this period of being a service-vehicle and will no longer feel the obligation to be well-rested as a vital service I’m providing to the tiny whale inside me, (reference picture below) so 5.30am starts won’t be a worry.

Anyway, detai...

New Tea With Alice with Dan Ilic, and Contemplations on The Nature of Work

Hallo lovely Patreonites

I made a joke once that the joy of working for yourself is that you suddenly find out you're a terrible employee AND a terrible boss.

I'm seeing more and more discussion online of the nature of work, particularly when it comes to a critical engagement with capitalism, and the failures of ... let's call it American-style capitalism; libertarian capitalism, 'the market will sort it out' capitalism. I'm calling it now, the market is an idiot, and where your s...
