THE BATTLE FOR BRÜTTELBURG

The GOBLINKO team is hard at work with the Battle for Brüttelburg! The kickstarter launches on April 30th! This is the most ambitious project we’ve tackled yet & it feels like a doorway into a new world of projects that I can see on the horizon! But I’m trying to stay grounded with the project at hand & not go too far off into the future! It’s also nice to feel really optimistic about the future & even Portland feels on the up & up! NEW BEAT

I've been listening to a lot of New Beat lately. It's the progenitor of Techno, originating in Belgium in 1988 & was directly inspired by American House Music (acid & otherwise). I was really into it when it first came out & youtube has allowed me to hear a lot of tracks that I missed. Anyhow, as I've been doing pixel art this is what i've been listening to. I can remember going to arcades, blasting this kind of stuff on my walkman & playing games!

STAY DEMENTED!

I’ve been doing talk therapy for the last couple months to help unwind some of the screwiness that I developed as a kid as survival mechanisms that aren’t serving me as an adult, one of the things I’m working on is bringing weird, funny SEAN to the fore, so I’ve been listening to a lot of Dr. Demento from the mid 80s when I used to tape it & trade tapes with my friends!

We’ve been working our asses off on The Battle For Brüttelburg videogame Kickstarter - it’s fun - but we haven’t really run a kickstarter that’s going to help us ramp up GOBLINKO into a new field since the first Hand of Doom kickstarter! One of the things I loved about the early days of video games was the collision of the old with the future! It’s like Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards. I like both, I like exploring the openness of the future but I’m also firmly rooted in the past! Like a mid 90s Hip Hop act.

THE BATTLE FOR BRÜTTELBURG

You play SALT, a twelve year old who has been thrown in jail, upon release he looks to gain a foothold through his usual channels, but everything is wrong, he works with different characters to make his way to the top of the city with certain assumptions about who is pulling the strings & knowing that you have to rely on yourself & your friends in the future.

SALT

About SALT, SALT is a 12 year old. He was orphaned & was raised on the streets & in an orphanage until he joined the Black Bats gang as the youngest & smallest member. Naturally curious & terminally bored, he made friends with all manner of street characters & even learned to train pigeons. He got thrown into the Bruttelburg Dungeon for theft & it is from here that your adventure begins.

A record cover & a t-shirt I did for Glitz! I was trying to channel 1974 & using some obvious references & feelings of that time. I did so much art for bands & stuff between 2012 & 2014, it was nuts!

One of the cool things about using SALT as the central protagonist for the Battle for Brüttelburg, is I’ve got a lot of unused art featuring him with lots of implications that can be used in the future! It’s great!
