SuperButch Sneak Peek!

After Barry and I came up with SuperButch's design, I bought some costume pieces, for reference. Barry's nieces had some...unexpected feedback.

Stay tuned to see if SuperButch wears it better!

At last, page 54! Thanks, as always, for your support and patience. It means a lot to us both.

See you with a new page in a week (we hope!).

Becky here. I spent SO much time this week looking up "pile of garbage in alleyway of old brick building" on Google image search, because ONLY the best for you loyal readers!

As always, thank you for continuing to support this comic on Patreon!

Hi, patrons! Barry here.

Page 52! I'm continually thrilled to see how far we've gotten. And I'm really excited for what's coming up on page 55. :-p

Sorry this page is a bit late - Becky got into a fight with some restaurant shrimp and lost. :-p  And thank you for sticking with us through the recent Patreon change-and-then-not-changing - we really appreciate it.

Barry here!

Sorry the page is late this week. Some pages are just mysteriously hard to draw; a face that would normally come pretty easily just needs to be redrawn and redrawn before it'll come out right, that sort of thing. It happens to me a few times in every project, and I think this was one of those pages for Becky. (That she's still exhausted from a lot of recent traveling probably didn't help.)

But it was worth the wait! I really like the way this page looks. I know that Becky fou...

Becky here! Please enjoy a late-night post.

Thanks, as always, for supporting Barry and me on Patreon. We're coming up on our 50th SuperButch page, and on Thursday, shortly after midnight, our webcomic turns 1 year old!

Barry here! Becky's been traveling, but she still managed to get a page done this week - even if it is posting a few days late.

I'm very fond of the cop's shadow in panel one. Only partly because I suggested it. :-p

Page 49 is already in process, and I expect it'll be posted in well under a week. And after that... page FIFTY! I'm very excited that we've made it this far. And thanks to all of you for supporting this project - I say this a lot, but your support really means a lot to us.<...

Webcomic-ing while out of town

Hi, Patrons! Becky here. I've been in Pittsburgh for a few days for my parents' 40th anniversary shindig.

I was absolutely planning to post this week's Superbutch page tonight, but the scan that I paid for at Kinko's (*growl*) didn't come out very well. I'm going to wait and re-scan the page when I get home. In the meantime, here's a photo of me using my parents' kitchen window as a lightbox!

Becky here! I've been looking forward to this page for awhile. Before  the script was even written, Barry had the idea of Lillian regularly spouting off trivia as an annoying/endearing character trait. We planned to keep an eye out for opportunities to fit that in. So when I found out about a chase scene in 63, I was like "OMIGOD WE CAN DO THAT HERE!!!"

My dad is an architect in Pittsburgh: lots of tasty old brick buildings there! I remember him pointing out building facades whe...

Run away! Run away!

Barry here. Some pages just take longer to draw - things don't come easily or quickly. This was one of those pages for Becky, I think. (Plus, her day job has been keeping her busy). So that's why we're running a bit late this week.

But the results are worth it!

Tiny detail I'm especially fond of: The woman hiding behind the bar in panels 1 and 2. In panel 2 she'd ducked down, so she can't be seen except in the mirror above the bar. So neat!

Turtle Sketches

Becky here! I'm running a little late on the comic page (partially due to having had an incomplete understanding of the bar layout, and then getting overly invested in creating the perfect realistic vintage warehouse-converted-to-dive-bar floor plan for the rest of this scene so you're welcome?) In the meantime, patrons, please enjoy this sketchbook page!

I mentioned in an earlier post that I wanted Captain Turtle's costume and gadgets to have turtle-like details in them. In order to get famil...

Becky here! Barry and I try our best to make each interview-page interesting to look at, despite the challenge that Lillian, Alicia, and Tammy have been sitting in the same position in the same room since almost the beginning of the story, with no big actions or changes taking place.

I did have a lot of fun with this page: playing with page layout, drawing the cluttered table, and using shadows to show that some time has passed since the interview began. (I'd also painted these beautiful ink-w...

Introducing...Captain Turtle!

You may recognize this guy from way back on page 9 (with a slightly different costume)

Captain Turtle started out as a background character, just meant to illustrate that superheroes are a regular part of Turtle City. But during a long road trip--er, story meeting--he became more of a major character. This warranted a redesign of his costume: Captain Turtle is an inventor who relies on gadgets for his super-powers, so we traded his cape for a turtle-shell jetpack. I added a garrison c...

Another week, another page! I really like the way Becky did this page (this is Barry writing). My script called for all four panels to be the same shot; Becky decided to make it "zoom" in, which adds so much drama. I especially love how the fourth panel came out.

We're working on getting these pages done early, so Patrons can see them early, but it doesn't always work out! Stick with us, we'll try and do better. :-)

Another week, another page! We'll post this in public tomorrow, but you get to see it... a little early, anyway.

Ceciline "Babe" Franklin and her partner Ruth Ellis were real women, who really did throw the best parties in Detroit - we've transported them to Turtle City for our story. Ruth lived to be 101, and was known as the world's oldest lesbian activist.

ETA: This is page 36, not page 37! :-)

Hi, patrons! This is the page we'll be putting online on Tuesday, but we wanted to show you the page early! Thanks so much for supporting SuperButch.

It's so great to have actually gotten to the gang. These four women (plus Baby Ruth, still to come) are the center of our story, and we've been waiting to get to them for a while.
