My first exposure to the X-Men was the animated series in the early 90's. It was everything you never knew you wanted from superheroes. The X-Men made me appreciate color, and taught me that a 5'3 Canadian in tights and pointy boots was the hardest motherfucker on planet earth.

I was pretty young at the start of Adult Swim, far too young to understand most of the humor. But I fell in love with the network because it felt like something I had stumbled on that nobody else knew about, a crazy secret between me and the television. As I grew older Adult Swim made me feel valued as an artist. Thank you [adult swim].

When I was a kid I had a VHS tape with about a half dozen of these cartoons. I would watch them constantly, over and over. And I wouldn't for a second have guessed that they were made before my grandmother was even conceived, because they looked infinitely better than anything I was watching on cable. Max Fleischer gave us the definitive Superman. And artists have continued to build on his foundation for decades.
