About that Pesky Spoiler Wall on Bonfireside Chat

Hey folk, Gary here

A few people in comments have expressed distress at my talking about the spoiler wall coming down on our Elden Ring coverage, so I wanted to talk about that a bit. We'll discuss further on the show when the time comes, but I wanted to say something now to address concerns.

Most of the people who have commented are against bringing down the wall. I first want to say that I hear you! I know that's shitty public figure cliche speak, but we ar...

Watch Out for Fireballs! 361: Vampyr (Premium)

We knew right after its release that Vampyr would be a WOFF! game. An RPG that cites Bloodlines as an inspiration, made by a smaller studio, with a great premise and very high highs that are unfortunately compromised by some very low lows. This bore out on our playthrough for the show. Jonathan Reid, the only vampire doctor in fiction, sets out to try and stop a horrifying epidemic in 1918 London, and learns that the disease is intricately related to the vampiric underground in the city. We d...

Unfilmable 40: The Descent

You can steer clear of a lot of problems by staying above ground. In fact, there are few reasons to go down there. Few reasons worth dealing with the CHUDS for, anyway. Someone should have told that to these thrill-seeking ladies, looking to do some spelunking after their friend suffers a tragic loss.

The Descent is one of the scariest movies out there, even before the monsters show up. But the monsters aren't entirely pointless... they're effective on their own and they drive the incid...

ORB 87: The High Cost of Loathing

Just like every sitcom has the "learning the dangers of credit cards" episode, every cartoon must have the "rich person realizes they're broke" episode. Maybe that's just this and the Simpsons. Regardless, the Monarch learns that he's broke after completely renovating his parents' condemned mansion, and now he has to work the steps to get back on his feet. This involves finding his way back into Dean's life, even though the boy just escaped his father's clutches to live in the dorms at Stuyve...

Everything to Guppy 860: Jupiter - Saturnus - Uranus - The Horny Boys

Everything To Guppy is a weekly comedy/gaming podcast that releases four 15-minute episodes in a single hour-long chunk every Tuesday for reasons that seemed good at the time. Gary Butterfield (Watch Out For Fireballs) and William Hughes (The A.V. Club) attempt to analyze every single item, boss, character, and concept in the rogue-lite video game The Binding Of Isaac. They manage to pull it off only slightly less than 50 percent of the time.

Abject Suffering 459: Nickelodeon GUTS

Nickelodeon's GUTS, later Global GUTS, was a mainstay of the network's "cheaply produced gameshows" that acted as ballast for some of the other, bigger shows. Each episode, a group of kids competed in physical challenges, culminating in a trip up the Aggro Crag, for a chance to win a "glowing piece of that radical rock". From this setup, we get a really anemic minigame collection that's mostly repeats... so Gary talks about a juggler he saw recently.

Bonfireside Chat 214: Liurnia of the Lakes, South

Having killed Godrick and taken his Great Rune, it's time to venture into the sunken basin of Liurnia of the Lakes. First we make a quick stop back to Roundtable Hold to get a glimpse at the Fingers, and then we hit the NPCs and dungeons of the southernmost ridges and reaches of the great swamp that acts as the cradle for the birthplace of Glintstone Sorcery.

Watch Out for Fireballs! 360: Another World / Out of This World

If you have even a mild interest in old games, your critical acumen will always be caught up in the tension between historical import and modern playability. Few games stress that dissonance more than Another World, which combines an unbeatable atmosphere and tremendous influence with some very outmoded game design. Is it worth taking the plunge? Listen in, buddy!

Abject Suffering 458: The Curious Expedition

The Curious Expedition isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it sits at a table set with a lot of outdated tropes that don't look so great nowadays. We're pretty sure this Patron just wanted us to make a bummer episode about colonialism. So we talk about that, along with how people just drown in pig shit and we, as a society, have decided to accept that.

Watch Out for Fireballs! 359: Terranigma

The world is waiting to be reborn, and it's waiting for you. Terranigma is probably Quintet's grandest statement on its pet themes... an action RPG that purports to be about the duality of creation and destruction. Is the game perfect? Not hardly. But it's got a unique tone and it improves on its predecessors' ...

Adaptation Decay 63: Frogger: The Game Show

You've never heard of this game show, and because it's on Peacock you'll probably never see it. But it's worth talking about because, wow, it's a very bad idea. Imagine sacrificing your bodily integrity to suffer concussions and broken bones on a more boring version of American Ninja Warrior, where every move is "gently jump to another surface and crawl on top of it". And imagine doing so while two hosts with the worst chemistry imaginable take potshots at you. It's a wild experience.

ORB 84: The Venture Bros. and the Curse of the Haunted Problem

The seventh season of the Venture Bros. is a weird one in that it begins with what is, effectively, a Venture Bros. movie known as the Morphic Trilogy. The first part, this episode, deals with an apparent haunting at VenTech Tower, the efforts of Rusty's friends to stop it, and the revelation of a horrible secret that goes back to the very beginnings of the show.
