Exquisite Suffering 102: Mr. Bean

Mr. Bean is the world's favorite pre-verbal homunculus, blundering around like a Roomba and upsetting society ladies. Don't worry, we don't see Mr. Bean as an indictment of the British isles like, say, Little Britain. We just don't get him! And that probably has to do with not really being exposed to him at an age when Bean antics would have taken. What we can all agree on is that the PS2 game that bears Mr. Bean's name is just awful.

This week we look at a humble, gag-based point and click puzzle game that's a parody of a parody of MacGuyver. We also talk about the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito film Junior. At length.

Bonfireside Chat 166: Dark Souls III: Cinders

Hey everyone, they made Dark Souls III good! Okay, to be less flip about it, the Cinders mod fixes a good number of the gameplay issues we had with the base experience of Dark Souls III. Poise is fixed, build variety is better-honored, and things are a touch less linear. This is a herculean gameplay mechanics mod that adds a ton of items from elsewhere in the Soulsborne series, and we really recommend giving it a try if you're able.

Watch Out for Fireballs! 292: Soma

October's horror game parade continues with Soma, a game that questions what makes us us. Simon is an unlucky guy. He gets a brain scan to help him with a terminal condition, and wakes up in a facility at the bottom of the ocean, eighty years in the future, after the world has ended. To make matters worse, a rogue AI is warping bodies and minds and seeking to re-assimilate anyone who's trying to escape. It's a survival tragedy game that asks loftier questions than most games ask and it's a su...

Abject Suffering 369: Hareraiser

Back in the late '70s and early '80s, Britain was overtaken by treasure hunt fever, sparked by a childrens' book called The Masquerade and its promises of a valuable gold rabbit for anyone clever enough to solve its puzzles. The contest ended in allegations of fraud, and this cursed rabbit went on to become the basis for an outright scam called Hareraiser, a duo of games for microcomputers that were little more than unsolvable messes. The gold rabbit was auctioned off when the company was liq...

Bonfireside Chat 165: Dark Souls II Cut Content

Dark Souls II's development was famously troubled, and From had to completely change the game halfway through... without developing new maps. This has led to a situation not unlike what we see in the game itself: evidence of one kingdom that a new kingdom has built over. Illusorywall joins us once more to look at what might have been.

Unfilmable 19: Dreams in the Witch House

We've reached our final Stuart Gordon Lovecraft adaptation, which is fittingly the final Lovecraft adaptation Gordon had the opportunity to direct. His adaptation of Dreams in the Witch House was featured on the anthology series Masters of Horror, and it stars Ezra Godden, who previously featured in Dagon. Gordon brings the story to the modern day and substantially reduces its scope, eliminating the cosmic elements and leaving us with a modest story about demonic possession.
