December Release

It's 1st December, so it's time for SSR1 Beta!

I have been really unwell for the last week. The SSR1 design has come together very well the last couple of months, as I demonstrated on the last livestream, but unfortuately I just lost nearly all of the time I set aside for finishing up and writing initial assembly notes.

I did promise 1st December though, and thankfully someone invented the expression "Early Access" for just such occasions as this. This should be a very simple buil...

November '24 Update

Hi Guys,

I am pleased to be able to say that SSR1 Beta is coming along nicely!

My objective for this redesign of the original SSR1 is to drastically simplify the device. I want to make this device to be as easy to build and use as possible.

On the mechanical side I have been able to take the original design and refine it down to just 6 main 3D printed parts. Not only does this make assembly much easier, but it also makes the device feel a lot more solid. I also intend to inc...

Any PCB designers in the house?

Hi guys,

This is a callout to anyone in our community that has PCB design skills.

As you know, I am currently working on a design for SSR1 Beta. This will be a clean-sheet overhaul of the design that will make the mechanism far more compact and simpler to assemble, as well as a number of other physical enhancements.

I am expecting that I will be speccing the ESP32-S3-Zero as the microcontroller for Beta, which is much more compact than the Devkit v1 used on the Alpha design....

October '24 Update

Hi Guys,

I have been ill, and busy, and not necessarily in that order. I do have some exciting news about SSR1 Beta, and where I am going next.

The Silent Stroker Robot, 1-axis (SSR1) has been around in its Alpha form since the beginning of 2023. It's actually the fourth machine I have released, after OSR3, OSR2, and SR6. As the "1" in its name implies it is a single axis device, which makes it different to my multi axis machines, but the fact that it is based on a brushless motor...

Video - September Livestream

Hi guys,

In this livestream I talk about my work to try to modularise brushless motor mechanisms so that we can build a future generation of quiet brushless motor powered multi-axis robots. I test my first attempt at a brushless motor driven twist mechanism.

September Release

This is the September hardware release.

August has been silly season for me, with illness and family summer commitments taking up a lot of my time, so this release is a minor one. I have a couple of cool things for you: An OSR2 base that supports a whole new power bus alternative, and a tweak to the official ESP32 firmware for OSR2/SR6 that addresses a couple of issues.

Several months ago I released some STLs for alternate base parts for the OSR2 that supported, amongst other thin...

Video - August Livestream

Hi Guys,

In this livestream I demonstrated using the TJoy to drive an SR6 on a different continent in real time! This was a demonstration of using the TJoy with the Ayva Remote platform, and was co-hosted with soritesparadox.

I think I will probably do at least one more livestream this month so keep an eye out for that on discord. I'm publishing this video now though because I think this demo is so cool.

Don't forget, the TJoy is now available in the Maker tier.

August Release - TJoy Alpha 2

This is the August hardware release.

This release makes the TJoy fully functional. TJoy is going wireless, with the added ability to connect to the Ayva Remote platform using TCode over bluetooth. I have added a battery and charger internal electronics to include a battery. It is also going multi-axis. I have added an IMU so that it can control pitch roll and twist as well as stroke.

Also a minor tweak to the main body to make the sensor insert a lot easier to install!

July '24 Update

Hi Guys,

I'm getting ready to drop the Alpha2 release of the TJoy. This update is very exciting because it will mean you can use the TJoy to control a stroker robot anywhere in the world!

I released the first build instructions and part files for the TJoy at the beginning of this month. At the current time it's just a fun curiosity that can produce a fun line going up and down in the serial monitor.

With this update that is going to change. I've been working with soritespara...

Video - July Livestream

This is hopefully the beginning of a new era of Tempest livestreaming!

I have a new computer that I have acquired specifically for livestreaming. I have been able to fix the audio and the lag that has been plaguing me for months, and I now also have the ability to support co-presenters and include their video and audio in the recordings.

In this livestream I demonstrated my new livestreaming setup by inviting Telani present to us his recent work on brushless motor drives.

Apologies for the extremely poor audio quality on this recording!

I have been having some serious problems with my recording setup. I have had a system that has worked well for over two years now, but increasingly I keep encountering serious problems, mostly due to software "updates". For this recording I was able to avoid the lag problems but at the cost of losing the chat window and detail cam. I also somehow managed to record the wrong microphone! It is looking like I will have to in...

July Release

This is the July hardware release - the TJoy controller.

This is an early alpha that will serve as a fun demo of just the electrocapacitive sensors. The code that I am releasing with it will produce a position line in the serial monitor, or a TCode output. This is just the first step, and I think this device has a lot of potential for the future.

Have fun!

June '24 update - 1,000 Patrons!

Hey guys,

Big news first! I just passed the 1,000 Patrons mark for the first time. This is a really big milestone, and I want to say a massive thankyou to all of you who make it possible for me to make a living creating these devices for you!

I first created this Patreon because I believed that commercial adult toys lack imagination, and that I could do better. I could never have imagined that nearly five years later there would be literally thousands of my devices out there in th...

June Release

This is the June hardware release. I'm sorry that I'm a few days late, as I was intending to put these out on 1st of the month, but I've been unwell the last few days and had to take a break.

This month I have a selection of goodies for you.

First I am releasing a set of alternate OSR2.1 ESP32 bases that will take a panel mounted XT60 socket, M3 thread inserts, or both. I have recently been trying out these thermal inserts that can be put into 3D printed parts using a soldering ir...

May '24 Update

Hi Guys,

May has been the release month for the T-wist 5 Beta. Those of you who are in my Maker ($8) tier will have access to the part files and step-by-step build instructions for my latest OSR2 upgrade. I am trying to put these hardware releases out on 1st of each month now, as historically this is what I always used to do.

My supporter ($2) tier will have access to the build instruction video, as well as the two livestreams in which I filmed the clips I used to make it.

May Release - T-wist 5 Beta1

This is the Beta1 releast of T-wist 5. I've written a full parts list and step-by-step instructions, to accompany the assembly video released in the last few days.

I've also been through the STLs and tweeked a few things. The Alpha1 and Beta1 parts should be interchangeable; I've just made a few fixes and improvements. I've also added a servo cover.

Happy Building!

Video - T-wist 5 Assembly Video

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I released a how-to video. This is a step-by-step guide that explains how to assemble the T-wist 5 for the OSR2. This 38-minute video was recorded during the two livestreams this month.

The Alpha STLs are already out, on the Maker Tier. If you are going to build one of these however I suggest you leave it a day or so, as I will be releasing the Beta STLs and the written build plans shortly.

Have fun!

April '24 Update

Hi Guys,

This month I am working to consolidate my latest hardware release, which I put out on 1st April. This time with a focus on helping you guys get it built.

As I mentioned last month, T-wist 5 is a new twist module that moves the heavy servo and awkward wiring off the receiver. It does this by driving the twist action using a cable running down a flexible tube. This works really well, and I have designed it to preserve simplicity as much as possible. For example, the mechani...

March Release - T-wist 5 Alpha1

Today I have an actual hardware release for you guys! This is the T-wist mk5. It's a cable-driven twist mechanism that moves the weight and fragile electronics of the twist mechanism off the reciever and into a side-mounted box that sits opposite the pitcher mechanism.

This is an Alpha-level release to serve as a proof-of-concept. I'm just releasing the STLs and will be following up with a few refinements and build instructions next month. My advice is that newbies stick to T-wist 4 for...

Hi guys,

I've been seeing a recurring issue with Discord, which has been preventing patrons from being able to access the server.

The Tempest Discord Server is the very heart of our little community. I can't overstate just how valuable a resource it is, especially to anyone who is new to this and looking to connect with others for a little guidance. I definitely encourage any of you who haven't already to get yourself connected.

Joining the server should be simple: you simpl...

March '24 Update

Hi Guys,

This month I am finally back to business as usual, which means an upcoming hardware release!

I consider it very, very important that I release something this month. Dealing with a first child and a major house move at the same time, and all of the associated stress, has killed my momentum.  I need a short self-contained project to get myself moving again, and so this month I am going to be releasing a new twist module concept.

This is a concept that has been br...

February Livestream

Hi Guys,

I am now moved into my new office. Things are going reasonably well but with my busted sleep schedule with a newborn to take care of I am finding it hard to get my momentum back. I've decided that big part of that has to be engaging with you guys, so expect to see me doing a lot more livestreams in the coming weeks.

In this livestream I check my new recording setup is working. I take the opportunity to go through some old prototype parts from my archive. It's a fun look b...

February ’24 Update

Hi Guys,

It’s been a crazy few months but I’m starting to get back to something that resembles normal, so hopefully back to business as usual. This month I have an exciting 3rd party software release, and a return to regular livestreams and newsletters.

I gave my patrons an update on my situation a few weeks ago. Essentially, my wife and I have just moved house and welcomed our first child within the space of a few weeks. The buildup was stressful. Moving into a new house that...

Video - Patron update

Hey guys.

I thought that you guys were overdue an update about what's been going on with me recently and why I've gone a bit quiet. A video seemed like the best way to do it.

The short answer is several life events seem to have fallen on me at the same time: specifically moving house and the arrival of my first child. These have been on a very stressful buildup over the last few months. I still have a lot of stuff going on, such as moving into my new office, but at least now that ...

Video - SSR1 driven by an A.I.

Hi guys,

I was recently approached by some people who are working on a project called Voxta, which is an AI platform. They were interested in connecting up sex toys. This is the result of some C# programming that I did as a proof of concept.

The best thing about this project is that Voxta is capable of running without any of the annoying censorship that the mainstream corporate providers insist on hobbling their systems with. This means that it's a much more open playground for th...

Hardware Release - OSR2 Buttons

Hi Guys,

I'm aware that it's been a long time since I put out a hardware release for you to have a play with!

This is a very basic button mount for the OSR2 that is designed to sit on the opposite side of the OSR2 to the pitch module, in place of the spacers. It allows four buttons to be connected to the A0 pin on the Romeo. This is currently only for the Arduino-based OSR2s, though I will also be adding these buttons to the ESP32 firmware. it requires a bit of soldering to get th...

October-November '23 Update

Hi Guys,

This month I am putting out some new firmware for the Arduino-based OSR2s ahead of the upcoming ESP32 firmware. I also have some general updates.

First of all apologies for the gap between posts. To add to the personal stuff that's going on I have been quite sick over the last few weeks and that's put a dent in my schedule. As my benefactors ($16 tier) will have noticed I have used that time to get up to catch up on my four-month backlog in my Benefactors newsletter. Once...
