Flick Detection (and December update)

So, first comes the birb update:

The papercraft toys from the Kickstarter were finished, shipped to backers, and can also now be directly purchased HERE. Most of the work this month went into two MAJOR events, though:

Go try the demo on Steam while it's up!

Hey folks! I'll do another post later, but please go try SkateBIRD on Steam while the Video Game Festival / Video Game Awards build is still up!

I'll talk more about that later, but gist is, for 24 hours, you'll be able to play this demo! and it's a new level you likely haven't seen! So go try it!

This is basically the $15+ backer build this month, but everyone can try it (for a short whil...

SkateBIRD spoopy surprise game

I've got a SkateBIRD goody for you. One last dose of spoopy before Santa hat time. I give you: SkateBIRD x JAZZ MICKLE's Pro Cap Wearer do a Spoopy Combo!

It's free / pay-what-you-want, and all donations go directly to Jazz Mickle (the dev building our birb customization system). This is just a fun cross-over between our game and hers!

An anti-tiling/Voronoi shader for Unity

Here's a Unity shader implementation of the Voronoi/anti-tiling stuff. This is based on the Legacy Bumped Diffuse shader, because I use it a ton, but you could just as easily apply it to any other shader. The meat of it is this part:

So really all you do is copy-paste that into another shader (or an include) and use textureNo...

Making a tiling texture look less ugly

There's a lot of ways of doing this, but I'm going to focus on Voronoi diagrams. Don't know the term? Well, you've probably seen one. Looks like this:

What you're doing, roughly, is determining per pixel which random point it's closest to, and then blocking all of those into a single surface. Actually doing this in real-time is tricky (and expensive) though, so there's a bunch of approximation...

Time to pick ANOTHER birb!

Ok, the winner of last poll was: Lilac Breasted Roller! That'll be in-progress once Alex recovers from EGX. SkateBIRD was in the Leftfield collection, and Alex ducked in to get a sense of how excited people were (in short: extremely), and I believe they're still pretty exhausted.

BUT NOW WE GOTTA PICK THE NEXT ONE AFTER THAT GO GO GO GO.

Spawn Pooling bonus code

These are just some of the many, many scripts I've built that I use a lot in spawning and despawning stuff. These should all be drop-in functional with PoolManager, unless they've changed their message names on the latest version or something.

This is a combo topic! There's code at the top, and cute art at the bottom. Scroll as you feel is appropriate, heh.

This topic comes up because I'm putting hats on birbs now. Also scarves. And glasses.

Original thought was maybe that we'd instantiate these as we loaded each birb into scene, but when you'...

Sky Rooms code

When I said it was simple, I meant SIMPLE. It really is just this: https://pastebin.com/q1dEbktP

Put that on your main render camera, point that childRotation at your skybox camera, and TADA! SKYROOM! YAY!

Sky Rooms

Sky rooms are a thing you probably know about if you've touched Source engine before, but otherwise? Probably not. Here's the gist:

Sky rooms are using a second camera to clear the screen and draw from a special room in your map, and after it finishes drawing, you clear the zbuffer and draw on top of that. It's like rendering your skybox ever frame manually. You sync up the rotation of the cam...

Finding Hidden Unity Objects

This one's important enough I'm leaving it public, because folks may not realize this (and it can hose a build).

Unity has this nasty habit of leaving junk invisible objects in your scene. They get created mostly by asset store stuff you use, often as marker objects for in-editor stuff, and the objects they create are intended to never be saved with the scene. At all. Ever.

But Unity sometimes does anyways. Also, because they're literally invisible, you won't know when it happens....

Advanced Throwup analysis

I figure I'll walk you through the Throwup code, to give you a leg up on extending it. Most of the meat you'll want to tweak is here:

This is where I create the UI objects. It's done on-demand, the first time something invokes the singleton, pretty simple self-instantiating singleton pattern. The only fanciness here is I'm creating a GameObject and components from whole cloth. Which is easy, re...

Here, enjoy my Throwup (error logger)

This is another month where everyone get some code, because I feel like this is important and useful to everyone. Yay!

This is my one-file, no setup required solution to debugging where you need to monitor some values runtime but don't want to make a custom UI or whatever. You can kinda-sorta use and abuse Debug.Log() for this, but you end up with a sea of text lines that can be almost impossible to parse. Hence, I made Throwup!
