Holy cow! A new video lesson after 3 months!!!
This one covers what polymeters are and demonstrates some examples.
I wanted to go over this stuff before moving to more in depth polyrhythm instruction because I see there's a misunderstanding between these two different things.
Attached to this post is a .zip file for your Guitar Pro files and PDFs of the examples played in this video.

Time to give everyone a preview of what's been in the works for quite a while now.
Attached is a .zip of the 50, yes, FIFTY polyrhythm examples that will be used in the full, upcoming polyrhythm instruction course.
Some of these are pretty straight forward. Some of them get down right WEIRD.
When you go checking these out, see if you can determine the keys and exotic scales used.

Hello everyone!
Yesterday was the first live streamed QnA. In case anyone missed it, here is the entire thing, unedited.
The video link provided should take you to where I start talking.
This is pretty lengthy - 2 hours long. There's a good chance I'll be editing this video into smaller pieces where each question is addressed separately.
I've made more headway in the Polyrhythm course. My goal is to have it finished and out by the end of the month.
I'd imagi...

Hello!
I've been working on a project for a while. It's a web page dedicated to chord theory. I finally got up 15 different chord types with explanations as to what they are, along with examples found in the key of C. This totals to 105 different chords.
Eventually, all 12 Major keys will be demonstrated. I'll also be adding a few other chord types I thought about while putting the final touches together today.
I have had nobody proof read any of this stuff, so if you believe you f...

After nearly two months I finally, FINALLY got a new lesson out.
As you may have seen in some news updates I've made, a series of videos/lessons is in the works to explain and demonstrate polyrhythms. This will eventually become the first instructional series to be packaged and sold on my site.
All of you patrons will receive the final product for free, as a thank you for your continued support as patrons.
Now, for some sad news.
I have no clue when another video will be rel...

Hi everyone!
Okay, no more joke videos planned... for now o.O
I've been working on putting music together to demonstrate what Steve Vai discusses in his paper, Tempo Mental.
Lots of polyrhythm stuff. So far I've got 19 examples.
I've attached all pieces of music in their Guitar Pro files so you can check things out before the lesson is finished. Because of how big this lesson is turning out to be, I'd imagine the earliest I can get this out is in the middle of January.

I've been bustin my butt to get a special holiday collaboration video done with Shredmaster Scott. Got it done just in time!
I'll be getting a new video out for New Years covering a seldom discussed secret amongst professional guitar players.
January will resume regular video lessons. The plan is to tackle the polyrhythms paper Steve Vai wrote. Might take a bit of time to put together examples to demonstrate his huge math equation. But, it CAN be done!

Something I've thought about doing is doing live Facebook feeds of practice sessions so people can see how I approach practicing. Today was the first one!
Apparently I did not have my phone at the correct angle, because the video is on it's side. Oops!!
Well, attached to this post are the tabs and Guitar Pro files of what I was practicing.
Let me know if you try them!

A new section has just been added to the website. This new section is devoted to chord theory.
So far there is my explanation of what a chord is, and a bunch of chord formulas listed to explain a wide variety of chords and how they are made.
Here's the new addition: http://www.milehighshred.com/chord-theory.html
The next thing to be added will be chord diagrams to demonstrate al...

Last night I was explaining how modes are different from one another to a student on Skype.
Eventually, I put together something I feel helps people hear how the modes are different from one another.
What I have attached to this post is a PDF tab, and Guitar Pro file that goes through all 7 modes of the Major scale. There's a chord accompanying the riff that desmonstrates each mode to help people hear the modes even better.
If you play this, please let me know what you think!

This video lesson was requested. The person asked if you could write power chord progressions in Lydian. Yes, you can!
Attached is a .zip file containing the PDF tabs of what is played in this video, as well as the Guitar Pro files.
For December, I'll be taking a bit of a break from the typical lesson videos. I have some things I need to take care of and I just need to have the time to do it.
What I will be doing to provide some material though, is share some riffs of my own that I...

I'm a big believer in metronome practice to get as fast as you can on guitar.
I've been told by several people over my years of teaching that, even though they practice with a metronome, they did not get faster.
Turns out, they were not practicing correctly. This video addresses some issues people create for themselves that prevent them from acheiving their speedy goals.

Hello everyone!
I'm thinking of new ways to improve your experience being a Patron. One idea is including your names at somewhere in the videos to let others know you've contributed to the making of each lesson.
And, you really have! I want everyone to feel a part of what happens with Mile High Shred.
So, please let me know what you think of this idea.
Talk to you soon!

I've been working on how I can teach the intro to the song Bleed by Meshuggah. This is a requested lesson by a YouTube viewer.
With the song being played with an 8 string guitar, and my guitar being 6 strings, I've had to make a bit of a change in how to approach playing the intro riff.
Attached is a .zip file containing the Guitar Pro files. I'll will begin video taping the lesson tomorrow. Hopefully get a good chunk of editing done too.
The video I shared is a collaboration done ...

This video demonstrates how you can approach vibrato practice. Basically, you'll be timing very small bends, LOTS of small bends to a metronome.
No tabs this time!
I will be taking a look at the intro to Bleed by Meshuggah next.

Hi everyone! I just finished putting together a bunch of riffs to demonstrate various things requested from a YouTube and mailing list subscriber. The attachment contains riffs on going from C Ionian into B Harmonic minor and finishing in E Melodic minor.
Then, there are riffs going from B Phrygian into F# Locrian. THEN you'll have riffs climbing 2 and 3 octaves for each mode in the key of G.
I'll be sure to divide up requests like this one into smaller bits so I can get more material ou...

This lesson covers four exercises to help you improve your gallop rhythm on guitar. These are also great for breaking speed picking plateaus.
In case you missed the last post, I'll include the tabs and guitar pro files for this lesson again. I believe I will keep providing guitar pro files for exercises shown in lessons as an added thank you to all the patrons. Only you guys get them!
Now, the next lesson really WILL be an extension on the 3 Note Per String Madness video. I decided to do...

Hello my dear patrons!
I have attached a .zip file to this post containing the tablature being used in an upcoming video. The lesson is going to cover 4 different gallop rhythm exercises for guitar. The first one is the most basic and easiest to play, and each one after increases in difficulty.
I have yet to shoot the video due to my moving into a new apartment where I'm also making my music and instruction videos now. Been hectic! I wanted to get you guys something to tide you over. Nob...

I tried answering a very complex question in this video. It was really several questions all relating to 3 note per string scale shapes. This could have easily been made into a 2 hour course, but I tried to keep things fairly condensed for the sake of this one video.
The next video lesson I will cover how I pick my fastest.

The latest video lesson demonstrates adding some bends to your finger tapping.
The next lesson is going to be a mouthful. Someone asked me to cover 3 note per string octave licks, combining the 3 NPS scale shapes, and how you can go about playing in one key then moving from major to minor to harmonic minor and melodic minor. Oh boy! Hope I covered everything well enough.

Playing with distortion can lead to a LOT of unwanted noise if you don't mute your strings properly. This video shows you how to clean up your sound.
The next video lesson will cover finger tapping PLUS string bends at the same time.
