Hey Laowinners! - Quick reminder only a few days left on the new T-Shirts! http://everpress.com/laowhy86
Happy Monday! Most of us are toiling away at our jobs on everyone's favorite day, Monday, the beginning of most people's work week.
However, this day has little significance for Chinese people outside of the state or factory jobs.
Anyone who has been to China knows that the work week/work hours can vary HU...

Hey Laowinners!
The other day I was sent this short video of a children's day performance where the kids put on a mock war of anti-Japanese resistance.
At first glance, the gut instinct is to think that this is a needless act of simulated violence teaching hate to children. However, the war did happen, and it is a part of history. However, the history that is taught is similar to how Kim Il Sung came to power through his undying love and countless victories for the DPRK.
The dramas I ...

Hey Laowinners!
I totally forgot to post the video I made with Vivi's reaction to the first time she went to Chinatown in NYC. It was pretty funny, not just for her, but for me.
The Chinese diaspora was interesting in the USA, as different pockets of Chinese in different areas in the USA were from different areas in China. I spoke to some Taiwanese folk that had to learn Cantonese, as that was the language that was spoken in Chinatown. The mainlanders who only wrote and read simplified C...

Hey Laowinners!
So it was the anniversary of the Tiananmen square massacre two days ago, and I often get asked, what do Chinese people think of what happened there?
First off, it is important that most schools or people won't even acknowledge what happened there. The slight chance that people do know what happened are under the impression that students/radicals attacked the government/army, and had to be dealt with, but the casualties were minimum.
The few who do know what...

Hey Laowinners!
I was asked a quite a few times, do I read, what do I read, or what books might inspire me to make videos etc.
To answer that succinctly, I read A LOT, specifically a ton of audiobooks.
I grew up reading a lot of fantasy, but as the time went on, and I became interested in language etc, I started reading books on geopolitics, different countries, and specifically, first hand accounts of people in those countries.
Recently I have been reading a ton about No...

Vices. We all have them. Surprisingly, many of the things that you relied on back home change quite a bit after moving abroad, especially to China.
For me, I loved Scotch whiskey, Canadian beer, golf and sports cars.
These things were simply unattainable in China when I first moved there, so replacements had to be made.
Whiskey became Baijiu. Molson became Tsingtao. Golf became travel. Sports cars became a cheap motorcycle.
However, it was th...

Hey Laowinners!
Show all your friends how little you care with your hot new Chabuduo T-shirt. You've probably heard me say this a million times, but Chabuduo 差不多 means "almost" or "good enough". But it is so much more than that. It runs Chinese society.
Show everyone how little you care. How half assed you do things.
Become Chabuduo.
2 weeks only!
Thanks!

Hey Laowinners!
Vivi just posted a video about what types of people join the military in China.
In a scene we couldn't talk about, she mentioned friends that are rich because of their military connections.
This is most definitely the case. There are people we heard about that have 10 car garages full of super cars, mansions in multiple countries, and people that own corporations. It is insane the kind of wealth that the PLA commands.
It's actually kind of terrifying due to th...

Hey Laowinners!
As a stupid 13 year old boy, I started experimenting with death sticks. Ya know, cigs...
I then continued to smoke until I was about 26, and quit when I got married (yeah yeah... the vape helped).
The funny thing is that when I moved to Taiwan from China for a year, I found it easy to quit for about 6 months, as people in Taiwan smoke a lot less than in China.
It was almost impossible for a sane person to quit in China, as cigarettes are handed out to pr...

Hey Laowinners!
Every time I visit the USA, I realize how much I've missed cars. Sure, I have cars in China, but China's car culture is mostly show off/utilitarian.
Cars, to many people, are hunks of metal that get you from point A to point B, but for me and my friends, they've been part of our own special little family. The places they take you, and the stories they hold inside are rarely forgotten.
I'll never forget buying my dads manual 95 Geo Metro back in 2001 for ...

As you all probably know, me and Winston are big fans of the devils drink. While looking through the Conquering Southern and Northern China, episodes I thought back to the many promises made in China for an alcohol to "not give you a hangover", and "you won't get a headache from this". It seems like it's a Chinese tradition to convince your guest that your hometown, or homemade booze won't produce any ill effects.
This may stem from the fact that China has a huge fa...

Hey Laowinners!
A word Winston and I throw around all the time is "cha bu duo" or 差不多。
You can pronounce it like cha (as in cha cha) boo dwoh.
This word literally means, "almost", but I like to think of it as "good enough".
This phrase is thrown around in daily speech in China more frequently than please or thank you. Why is that?
Well, Chabuduo culture in China is so pervasive, that it really controls daily life in a way. Example: Constructing a building,...

Normally I would take the US state department semi-seriously, at least for travel warnings, as I am a US citizen, but this one is a bit much.
"The U.S. State Department issued a health warning this morning to U.S. citizens in China after an American government worker was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury. The unnamed worker reported “subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure.”
The U.S. government employee w...

People often ask me about the cultural differences between my adopted home of China, and my home country of the USA. These are constantly highlighted in my videos, but what about in my relationship with my wife, Vivi?

Hey Laowinners!
Today I wanted to mention a lighthearted, yet annoying thing.
Recently, some middle aged Chinese lady tourists in Vietnam were forced to change their clothing after wearing the infamous 9 dash line map of China, which claims resource rich areas off of the coast of Vietnam.
This dispute has been going on for awhile now, but the choice for these women to wear these shirts - TO VIETNAM! was a bit ridiculous to me.
I can guarantee a Vietnamese tourist would not wea...

Weirdly enough, Uber has a strange story in China. It was basically taken down by a domestically grown competitor, DiDi. DiDi has now entered the vernacular of Chinese people, and it's absolutely insane on how many people use it now. So through government help, DiDi managed to wipe out it's foreign competition in China...

I have just been accepted into YouTube's sponsorship program, but will not be announcing it publicly at this time.
Basically, YouTube is giving big channels (+100,000 subs) a chance to get extra income through sponsoring the channel, where subscribers get access to emojis, a community platform, and badges etc.
First of all, everyone on this platform (Patreon) has been with us thick and thin, so I wouldn't change a thing. So I decided this. Sponsors on YouTub...

Hey Laowinners,
Let's be real for a second.
Some very immature haters decided to attack our IMDB pages for Conquering Northern and Southern China with fake reviews. It was obviously a team effort to bring our scores down, and I suspect I know which Reddit community did it. The same ones who deface our Wikipedia pages.

Hey Laowinners,
I am super pumped to release to you guys early, the first behind the scenes video for Conquering Northern China. We have a ton of content, self filmed stuff, and lots of scenes that didn't make the final show.
That is not to say that stuff isn't good, but we had time constraints for our distributor and how long it had to be in the end.
Long story short, I always felt that the first province we went to, Shandong, was really underrepresented, so this is the journe...
