B2 - Chapter 7: Moving Pieces

This time, the figure of a man in a long, dark cloak appeared in the center of the room. Four large bones floated in a steady orbit around him, their size noticeably larger than any human bone Enya had seen. Even the femur, the largest bone in the human body, looked small compared to these summoned fragments.

The man raised his hand, making slow, twirling motions that sent the bones spiraling around him in fluid arcs. With a sharp flick of his wrist, the four bones snapped into position...

B2 - Chapter 6: Magic Association

“We’ll… make sure to get your message sent, Mr. Pell,” the clerk said, his tone uneasy. His gaze lingered on the skeleton in front of him, critical and wary. The clerk himself was a skinny sort who could have done himself a favor by getting with a hearty meal. The crest of the information guild was embroidered on the upper right of his uniform—a simple looping line.

“Make sure you do. That coin by Lorrin ain’t cheap,” Pell replied, his voice dry.

The clerk glanced ...

B2 - Chapter 5: Compensation

The grinding noise of the iron bars ceased, followed by the low rumble of the heavy door sliding open inward. One by one, the group stepped through: Shelmi, Josier, Berry, Manny, and finally Enya, who peeked through the legs of the taller figures in front of her—except Shelmi, who was shorter than she was.

“Pell!” Enya’s voice rang out as her eyes fell on Pell’s skull lying abandoned on the ground. Her chest tightened as memories surged of the dungeon when he’d been just a s...

B2 - Chapter 4: Attempted Escape

“What do you mean his health is low? Is he hurt?” Manny asked.

Enya stared at her status screen. When Josier had informed her that Pell had been arrested, she immediately checked the party screen. From there though, Pell’s information was hidden, due to the distance that they were away. Once they came close to the guardhouse, she saw that Pell’s health was near full. Now, however, his health had plummeted some time in-between then and now.

She flicked her gaze back to Shel...

B2 - Chapter 3: The City Lord

The soft glow of enchanted lights attached to the chandelier filled Clament’s office, illuminated shelves lined with books on city governance and trade. Behind his grand desk of dark mahogany sat Clament himself. The crimson sash of his station rested across his broad chest. With a steely gaze, he scrutinized a ledger, focusing on the numbers marked in red.

Opposite of him sat two men in fine, leathery, large chairs: one, a wiry man in his late forties, with spectacles perched precar...

Book 2 - Chapter 2: Abuse of Authority

The city square was filled with people. Everywhere you looked, there was a stall with a merchant behind it, vying for attention.

The square was sectioned off, placing certain merchants in specific areas to avoid confusing buyers or sellers. Near the left side were trinket and artifact sellers. Small pieces of jewelry, gems, baubles, and curios were up for sale. Near the center were miscellaneous and convenience items, such as fabrics, games, books, and household tools.

RE: Chapters 1-7

Just wanted to post an update, that chapters 1-7 have been updated/revised and are now public on royalroad.

Some chapters have undergone a major revision/rewrite, like chapter 1, while others have been updated with additional context, or removal of unnecessary details.

You do not have to read these updated chapters, as they do not change th...

Book 2 - Chapter 1: Stop, Criminal!

Pell wasn’t exactly what you’d call an average adventurer. In fact, he wasn’t an adventurer at all. Yet, here he was, about to walk into the Adventurer’s Guild. Officially, he was a commissioner—the kind of person who paid others to take on quests he didn’t want to handle himself.

Four years had passed since he stepped into the hall. Four long, lonely years. All the while, he could only think about two things: escape, and the woman he had left behind, the daughter of his for...

Re: Chapter 3: I hate that book too, kid.

This is a rewrite of chapter 3. It has been significantly shortened.

He stood there, staring at the wall opposite his shop, his head resting on his palm, utterly bored out of his mind. Two more days had passed, completely uneventful.

"B-boo?" came a sound from behind him.

Pell lifted his head and shifted on his creaky stool. The girl was there, waiting patiently. She held a closed book pressed to her chest. With a small smile, she extended her arm an...

RE: Chapter 2: Upside-down Book

This is a revised version of chapter 2.

“Alright, you,” Pell said, directing his bony finger from the girl to the chair, “just sit down over there, stay still, and don’t move. Got it?”

The little girl walked over to the chair he pointed at. She looked at it briefly, then turned back to face him. Seeing that he was still pointing at her, she reached out and grabbed his finger.

“What? Hey! Let go!” Pell yelled. He tugged his hand back and...

End of Book 1!

With the release of chapter 61, Book 1 is now considered finished.

All in all, roughly 155k words from start to finish, I never thought I'd actually be able to get this far. Thank you all for reading my book so far, and giving me the motivation to write.

I've begun rewriting sections and submitting to publishers for my story, and so far, I've received two offers, something I never thought would be possible.

I am still deciding on what is best for my story, a...

Chapter 61: Hunt for the Godsworn [End of Book 1]

In a dim chamber, a man sat bound to a chair. The room’s stone-gray walls closed around him, with only a single torch on the wall lighting up his battered body. His hands were shackled by mana-infused cuffs that glowed faintly against his blemished skin. These cuffs were specially designed—strong enough to hold even the most seasoned of A-rank Paragons. Escape was unlikely.

A gag of cloth silenced him. His clothing, save for a thin layer of undergarments, had been stripped away. Cu...

RE: Chapter 1: The Little Girl in the Dungeon

Hello, all! I will be uploading some rewrites of my earlier chapters, denoted by the 're:' in the title as the retention on them from RR is not the greatest. Here, I will be posting the unedited versions, so there may be some typos. If you're caught up on my story, there won't be anything major you're missing out on, but there are some new things I added, and removed, but nothing that affects the story in any way shape or form. If y...

Chapter 60: The Dummy Test

"What test should I do?" Enya asked.

The three of them now stood just outside the chamber, waiting as the instructors worked to repair it. They’d been asked to step out temporarily—apparently, the chamber’s white stones could be restored by channeling mana through them, making it an ideal spot to test even the most destructive of spells.

“You said you’re a necromancer, right?” Manny asked.

“Mhm. I can summon skeletons and also shoot bone spears at people!”...

Chapter 59: The Barrier Test

“Alright. Which test would you like to take? Dummy, Barrier, or Reactive?” The deep, clear voice belonged to a tall, burly man, about seven feet in height. Despite his imposing build, there was something reassuring about his tone. His skin was a warm tan, and he wore fitted, dark armor that stood out compared to the black suits the other officials wore. Most people Enya had seen around the academy so far were lean and wiry, but this man was all muscle—almost like a fortress in human for...

Chapter 58: Registration

“Whoa… look at all the people!” Enya murmured, taking in the scene as she walked with Berry and Manny toward the academy square. Ahead stood the big entrance, with towering pillars and a gleaming hallway stretching inside. The academy looked massive, at least four stories tall, with tall spires on either side poking up even higher.

Around the square, there were individuals donning crisp, black uniforms with white badges on their chests. The badges had a white fish engraved on the...

Chapter 57: No Yelling in the Inn

Enya propped herself up, sitting cross-legged on the bed. “The tournament?”

“Sure, that. But if you’re planning to enter and somehow place high enough—probably should’ve asked those kids how that all works—but if you do manage to get in, are you going to take that one-month class thing they mentioned?” Pell asked.

“Hmm… maybe? Schools and friends were always mentioned in your books. So it should be really fun, right?” Enya's enthusiasm was infectious.

Story Update and Taking a Break (kinda).

Hello all!

Book 1 will be concluding in a few chapters, and I may take a break from the story for a week or two. I really wanted to go back and edit some chapters and rewrite things, and also to buildup my backlog for when book 2 launches. Although I say 'break,' I will actually be writing during this time. Instead of the 3X posts on MWF, I may only post one or twice a week, and irregularly for the duration of my break.

I posted a poll on Chapter 51 (The latest ...

Chapter 56: Berry and Manny

“A-ahh?” Enya muttered, bewildered by the sudden embrace from this random girl. Strangely, it wasn’t uncomfortable—it was actually kind of warm, though the girl’s strength was a little alarming. Enya let out a small groan from the tight squeeze. “Ahhh, you’re so cute!!” the girl squealed, swaying left and right with Enya still caught in her grip.

“I’m… sorry about this, Mr. Skeleton,” the boy said with an apologetic bow. “My sister Berry is… really extrovert...

Chapter 55: Hug?

"So… let me get this straight,” said the guard, his face tilted down to his wrist, where a small blue crystal lay embedded within his bracer. A faint light emitted from it, glowing softly. The man’s expression, a focus that hinted at something beyond a casual inspection upon the stone.

“Your name is Enya Empyria… and this skeleton skull you’re holding is a merchant named Pell Meltere?” he inquired, his gaze still flicking in the air above the stone.

Chapter 54: Talo, The White Bastion

Five days had passed since the sudden bandit attack on the merchant’s caravan. After Enya had taken out a bandit’s leg and killed another archer, and with Mr. Bones going head-to-head against their leader, they had successfully made their escape. Using the dungeon core’s built-in functions, they managed to pull Mr. Bones out safely before his utter demise. Enya compared it to a “cheat” skill, similar to the abilities described in Pell’s novels.

The first day was rough. They...

Mr. Bones crashed into a towering tree, the impact sending cracks rippling through the trunk. Nuts, acorns, and strange spiky green fruits tumbled from above, rattling against his battered frame. A deep dent marred his sternum, puncturing through several centimeters of his bone armor.

Despite everything, the bone sword Jakk had stole...

His sword arced through the air, but the skeleton was faster than it looked. Its bony arm shot up to block, and the sound of bone meeting bone rang out, fo...

But now, that same Pelemor lay dying, a blade plunged through his chest, his screams drowned by the blood filling his mouth.

Author's Thoughts, open for Discussion.

Hey all!

So, this is just some of my thoughts about chapter 50, but more so for the story overall, and I'm welcome to any discussion on it.

If you haven't already, I recommend catching up and reading chapter 50 before reading this post.

First off, if you've read chapter 50, you'll notice at the end that Enya comes up with a pretty... wild idea, or I guess, ideology. Instead of helping the caravan out of the goodness and innocen...

Chapter 50: Common Sense Carriage

The three of them sat in a rough circle, perched on tree logs Mr. Bones had dragged over. In the center, a small fire crackled, its orange embers flickering as it burned through the dry mulch and twigs Pell had gathered. He knew how to start a fire—it was a skill every traveling merchant needed to master.

Pell sat on his own log, while Enya shared hers with Mr. Bones, both of them opposite him. Enya, with a stick of roasted boar in hand, was tearing into the meat as if it would disap...

For Enya, it was a welcome change—a pleasant sensation, one she hadn’t ever felt before.

As they wandered, small squirrels scurried up trees, and birds fluttered away at the sight of the trio. Most of the creatures were startled simply by the presence of Mr. Bones, ...
