The Great Adventure (The Neal Morse Band) | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 49

I'm pleased to present another reaction to music by The Neal Morse Band. We looked at The Similitude of a Dream in episode 18. Now, we're getting to the double-album (triple-vinyl) follow-up. It's intense. It's epic. It's quite wonderful.

I imported audio from the turntable, so the music sounds great! Come along for the ride. You won't regret it!

Songs of Summer: Fan Favorites (Ep. 17)

For us in the northern hemisphere, the heat of summer has been hard to avoid this year. So, I thought we'd join the party with our community's favorite 'Songs of Summer'. These are songs that either speak of summer directly or somehow spark personal memories of summers past. I included 10 songs this time. I hope you enjoy!

YouTube Playlist has the songs in order of our countdown: htt...

POLL: Vote for the next Extended Play Lounge Episode!

We've had a run of great episodes with older albums. For this EPL, I'm eager to listen to a relatively new album. There's quite a bit of great music being made, and I'd like to know which of these five albums our community wants me to review!

Cast your vote for your favorite. The polling will end on Monday July 31.

NOTE:
- I've heard the BBT album twice now...and I included it on this list because 1) I wanted a BBT album in the list...and 2) it's the album from them I want to r...

Never Gonna Let You Go (Sergio Mendes) | Behind the Score (Ep. 44)

I was spurred to analyze this song by a recent recommendation...as I didn't really realize just how complex the song is. Of course, I've heard it through the years, but I've never given it much thought...until now!

There's some consistent techniques used in this song that provide its flair and sound...and many, many modulations! I hope you enjoy!

Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (Eric Whitacre) | Behind the Score Ep. 43

On this edition of BTS, I'm returning to my choral roots and to the music of Eric Whitacre. I was inspired to review and share this piece by listening to the new Big Big Train album Ingenious Devices. The BBT album sparked a memory in me of performing this work by Eric many years ago.

There's much we can learn from Eric's technique...especially in the voicings he uses for unaccompanied choir. I hope you enjoy!

Selling England By The Pound (Genesis) | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 47

It's great to get back to another full album listen to Genesis. This time, with Selling England By the Pound, I'm familiar with about half the album, but that didn't stop me from discovering many new things along the way. It's a wonderful album...perhaps my favorite by the band. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Well...this was a fun experiment! I really enjoyed these eight songs, all of which were originally submitted for a Fan Favorites episode but didn't get enough votes for the video the first time around. I've gone through all of the past Patreon Fan Favorites polls and selected songs that I was particularly interested in hearing.

So, I hope you enjoy this potpourri of a countdown!

Exploring a 31-tet new work for Organ with John Franek | Behind the Score Ep. 42

I'm pleased to once again have composer John Franek as a guest on a Behind the Score episode. John has just had his work Radiolarium premiered in Amsterdam, and the instrument is a pipe organ that divides the octave into 31 equally tempered notes. This is a fascinating discussion and piece of music. I hope you enjoy!

Announcing the next Fan Favorites selections

Hi friends.

This month, for our Fan Favorites video, I'm trying something new. I've gone back through all of our Fan Favorites Patreon Polls, looking for songs that originally didn't receive enough votes to earn a spot on that month's video. And, I've selected eight tracks that I haven't yet heard that I'm quite interested in hearing.

I didn't go back and check from whom the recommendations came. These selections are simply the ones that sparked my musical curiosity the most.

Romantic Warrior (Return to Forever) | Extended Play Lounge, Ep. 46

New EXTENDED Daily Doug Introduction...

OK...I'm too excited about this to keep it a secret...we've got a new Extended Intro sequence that we're planning to exclusively use on videos here on Patreon.

Venus: The Bringer of Peace - Gustav Holst (Behind the Score, Ep. 41)

We're returning to The Planets by Gustav Holst. I discussed movement 1 (Mars: The Bringer of War) in episode 37. Today, it's on to movement 2 and Venus: The Bringer of Peace.

This movement has quite a different character from its predecessor, providing the 'antidote' to the arrival of Mars. I hope you enjoy the video.

My handwritten analysis is provided in the attached PDF.
